This is one of my shows that caught my eye a long time ago and then ended up on the backlog for 10+ years.
I recently got around to it and I was pleasantly surprised, it's been a fun watch.
It's got the lighthearted rag tag globetrotting adventure feel in the vein of 80s shows like Mospeada, Macross or ZZ.
The mechanical design is also fantastic too, the underwater setting alone creates a pretty unique overall aesthetic, but the functionality of the designs is also pretty thoroughly imagined.
So many little details that help create a very 'lived in' feeling to the mecha and setting. They don't feel like 'throwaway' mecha designs like in many shows that just shove mecha into a sci-fi setting that just looks like the contemporary world. It all feels so immersive.
The character designs are also done by the late Hiroshi Osaka, and you can see he improved a lot from his victory designs here. I like the amount of detail he puts into the outfits here.
And while the characters are just the classic archetypes for this type of story their execution is solid, the MC is a fun guy too.
They also just throw you into the world, not much is explained at the start, but the show does a good job at dispersing information diegetically.
I really didn't expect to end up liking the series this much, I thought I might enjoy it a bit because the designs looked cool, but the whole thing is really just well done.
It's the kind of series I feel serves as a good baseline for mecha anime.

Does the MC end up dating/romancing with that hot older lady at some point?
The girl you posted? That's his childhood friend, not an older lady. She's his main love interest.
Older? She is his childhood friend, they're the same age.
Butch pirate captn?
Actually watch the series m8.
Got damn frick me. I feel fricking stupid. Sorry anons. Thanks for the responses.
It’s the same mechanical designer from gundam ecole
The only reason this is in my backlog is because the woman who voiced Sochie in Turn A and Hime in Brain Powerd is also in this, and I just really love her voice
I love her in Brain Powerd. Sochie is cute, but there's a few scenes in BP that are pretty damn romantic.
>is because the woman who voiced Sochie in Turn A and Hime in Brain Powerd is also in this
this is exactly my reason as well
What the hell I'm seeing she's only been in 3 anime? That's so strange for Someone with huge roles like Sochie and Hime, what happened?
Guin/Johnathan's voice actor also was in like 5-6 anime.
Going off her Japanese Wikipedia page, she was more of a theatre actor than voice actor and she left acting entirely in 2005 because she was pregnant and now has two kids. So I'd assume she was happy to retire and be a stay at home mom instead of acting.
Same deal with the girl who voiced Sara in King Gainer. Tomino like to cast newcomers and they just disappear afterwards despite doing a great job.
The only reason I know about this series as well.
This show is so fun, I really miss these kinds of shows where it's just a large crew of likable characters getting into episodic adventures on their ship as they travel the world.
It's a shame anime doesn't have these kinds of stories anymore. I feel like they haven't been done since the 2000s. There's no sense of adventure like this anymore. I'm trying to find the exact way to put it, but a lot of stories are much more "introverted" now.
does it have easily accessible info on the various mecha that appear?
The robot/alien/whatever girl was hot.
Vestamona is such a great character.
Easily one of if not the best execution of the "Action Girl" archetype I've seen in an anime or any media in general.
She's highly competent and really good at thinking on her feet and getting out of jams, but the way her recklessness often backfires on her by getting her into even worse positions is a great drawback that balances out her character.
It's almost like for her character they just took one of the classic mecha MC archetypes and just Genderswapped it.
I also love that she's just slightly unhinged.
>Vestamona
She sounds based. Can't wait to watch the show.
This show was fun.
Not really memorable or remarkable in any way, but fun. It's a shame they don't make them like this any more.
every time I see this thread nobody bothers posting robots for some reason
The very simple reason is that there is almost no art of the robots, and not even a huge amount of plamo of them. Any posts of the robots would almost have to be screencaps of them.
You can the same with Burst Angel or Olynssis, but at least you can find names for those mechs.
You mean "Round Bcuklers"? Or do you mean the names of individual ones, like "Vector of Hope", "Mermaid" etc? There's very little information on them on English sites, but why should there be when Mars Daybreak wasn't a particularly well received show? If no-one cared about it, then no-one will care to translate the info and publish it online in some form. Sure, whatever other old show you want to name has more info; but that just means more people care about them, or at least, care about them more and are willing to put in more effort. At some point, there has to be a limit of information and Mars Daybreak falls below it.

Guess it's time to beg the wiki anon to make a Mars Daybreak page. I mean the guy made a damn Geneshaft page he should be able to whip up something here.
>Guess it's time to beg the wiki anon to make a Mars Daybreak page
Will consider.
Funny and hey giant sea monsters!
Thanks for considering.
It’s a pretty obscure show, there also aren’t any scans of its artbooks on sad panda/e-hentai which is pretty uncommon.
I’d like to get ahold of any artbooks with the show’s settei myself, there’s a lot of cool prop design going on in it.
I haven't watched the show in years now, but I do remember liking the little Haro style bots and the Round Bucklers being either cabled to control remotely or uncabled to control from the wienerpit added some nice variety. The ship has a nice design too, with the hammerhead front. I wouldn't mind more Mars Daybreak honestly, if only to find out more about power armor dolphins and sea witches; two intriguing elements of the setting that were barely explored.
>the little Haro style bots
God, I wish I still had the screencap from it where one of the crew members says "The Balls will get rusty if you don't play with them."
How many sea monsters are in this series?
1 so far I'm at episode 17
This show is astonishingly great at being funny which is something I appreciate because rarely does anime handle comedy well.
The way Gram just playfully keeps fricking with Vess and not taking her threats seriously while she's fuming with such intensity and sexual frustration towards him is hilarious.
And the ship of Aurora crew are a goofy bunch at times.
The fricking talking dolphin that sounds like a grizzled war veteran is also based.
The episode where Vess and Gram dueled is fricking fantastic. I don't usually love sappy melodramatic stuff like this, but it's done so well and is a really strong climax for their relationship.
I'm kinda surprised barely anybody talks about this show. I feel like it executes a lot of very classic ideas at a really high level.
Wow, just found out the guy who directed this handled storyboards on the last episodes of King Gainer and G-Reco as well as a ton of episode direction for 90s Gundam. He basically did ED and storyboards for 50+ episodes across every Gundam series released from G to Turn A then left to join Bones, but went back to work with Sunrise after a few years.
