Collateral and Miami Vice were kino.
Heat would be kino if it was an hour shorter.
Blackhat was stupid as frick outside of the antagonists who were actually cool.
Ali sucked because Will Smith isn't threatening or intimidating.
>isn't threatening or intimidating.
Muhammad Ali wasn't threatening or intimidating, he was a class clown goofball prettyboy type that beat big strong tough guys like Frazier and Liston with finesse and precision.

in thief mann used real criminals as advisors and some of them even played characters
like the guy playing sgt urizzi i believe is like some israeliteel thief lol so this was his take on what a criminal thinks a corrupt cop looks like
Correct. John Santucci, who played Urizzi, was an Outfit connected burglar. Jerry Scalia's, a made member of the outfit, and known israeliteel thief, was a technical advisor. Chuck Adamson and Dennis Carina were Chicago policemen who were technical advisors, and also had small roles.
I love Mann's films, but have never watched this. The idea of Will Smith playing a super serious role or someone like M Ali just doesn't make sense to me. I just imagine Will Smith and Jamie Foxx doing impressions of these real, distinct people who existed in a different era. Mann's style doesn't seem well suited to past eras, which made Public Enemies kind of awkward to see the first time, as you naturally compare it to his contemporarily set work, but I really like it when I saw it more recently. Ferrari seemed a bit out of place/time too, but it was good.
So I'm not gonna watch Ali. That scene is neat though, lot of other directors would have made a lesser version of it.
That's a big part of it, but he combines that with a distinct visual style/framing/lighting and some degree of realism, with whatever the subject matter is, to create this overall atmosphere and feeling to his films that's distinguishes them, and if you're into that distinct "Mann feeling" lol, his films are just fantastic.
Authentic seeming things like the way gunmen move, the way guns sound, the instruments thieves use, that stuff adds a lot, but could get looked over by others filmmakers.
digital cameras broke him
Absolute kinosseur, however he does have a couple of misses in his oeuvre
There is also some truth to this

why do redditors dislike Blackhat? Idgi
I liked this but apparently since other people found out about it I am no longer supposed to like it.
Michael Mann made a Muhammad Ali movie? The frick? Why?

Michael Mann has the perfect balance of style and substance. He does it so well.
his specialty is in his use of music isnt it

I love how you can hear in Caan's voice how much drilling through that pipe at that awkward ass angle fricking sucks.
it is time, time to reevaluate Blackhat
He invented kino. Heat is the best movie ever made.
