Midsommar (2019)

So I finished watching this, while it's a good movie, there's something in there that stops it from being great, I think it's the weakest in Aster's (the director) full length movies. Good acting from the cast but some characters were not necessary as they didn't add anything to the plot, one thing that left me curious is whether the specific ritual was once every 90 years or once a year because they chose their May queen once a year, I do believe they should have added a bit of supernatural elements in there like in Hereditary, would have made the climax more impactful IMO.

This, I loved the movie but it strikes me as extremely odd that there are no 'folk horrors' about anything other than europeans/sometimes americans, like we aren't the ones killing women cuz they showed their hair in public, and aster being israeli makes it way worse

i really liked the hallucination scenes in this one, i think they got a bad trip perfectly presented
maybe they should have done more with the whole "my entire family died" thing
also some of these characters are so disgusting they are almost unbelievable, then again they are american

      >they should have done more with the whole "my entire family died" thing
Definitely, and I think the movie would have benefited from a real intense fight between Pough and her BF instead of the passive aggressiveness that we got.

I read the leaked script and it felt tighter and more intense on paper. Pugh was good but many of the other characters just didn't come across as well, Pele the Swedish friend who lures them there was the most interesting to me but in the movie he's entirely one dimensional, where as in the script he comes across as genuinely troubled by his action at the end, the other Swedish guy who lures the couple is portrayed as maliciously jealous in his intent and it makes sense when he too is burnt. Lost opportunitys

      >Pele the Swedish friend
Wished the movie focused more on him, or that we at least got a confrontation scene between him and the BF after he kissed Pough.
      >the other Swedish guy
Yeah, we only got that scene when he says he went on a date with her and then we only see him as a background character.

        Anonymous

In the leaked script at the end there was supposed to be a scene where the camera focuses on Pele embracing happy elders but theres a pained expression when they move away that betrays his feelings

Similarly with the other Swedish guy, there was supposed to be a scene where in the background he's staring jealously at the couple and is foreboding of their fate, and suggests he wanted to sacrifice them for selfish reasons

Stuff like that was sorely missed imo, they just come across as forgettable and mindless in the movie

          >Stuff like that was sorely missed
Most definitely, it's weird he didn't include them in the director's cut.
          >forgettable and mindless
Most of the characters are, like why even show us the inbred kid if you're not gonna do anything with him.

That was my expectation when I watched the directors cut but the cut scenes didn't really add anything. Overall it just feels a lot less emotionally tense than it should have been and I struggle to fully articulate it

              >a lot less emotionally tense
That's true, maybe it got to do with the fact that the movie tries to focus on a large cast instead of just the BF and the GF struggles, comparing it to Beau is Afraid maybe helps with you articulating better, because that was a really intense movie, and I preferred it over this one, even though the story is crazier and more "zany" than Midsommar.

I've yet to see Beau is afraid and regret not seeing in cinema but for something so much more ambitious it's impressive he could pull that off (according to what I've heard) but midsommer feels somewhat undercooked

While I do recommend the movie, it's not something that every watcher would enjoy, and it's really long, so I do recommend you keep your expectations in check.

I was disappointed with the directors cut. I thought it would flesh out the characters but it added nothing. I really like the ending visuals and music. There's an excellent film hidden in there and it's frustrating that it couldn't live up to it.

The second half seemingly devolves into "yeah and then those Swedish freaks did this weird shit. And then they did that weird shit, and then they did more weird shit" etc.. It would have been better if they'd focussed more on how they were grooming Pugh and making them seem more reasonable. It kind of feels like a copout to have her essentially have a traumatic / mental illness backstory which they use to short-cut her into becoming a cultist.

That's why the Pele thing fell flat, it should have had more emotional weight when he comes to her and says he was looking forward for her to meet his family, it comes across with romantic intent when actually he genuinely feels for her grief and wants her to be embraced by the cult

    >something in there that stops it from being great

It's too cute, and the there's no twin sister she's just bent and/or dead is as undercooked as it could possibly be. And making a film about your breakup that proxies as a curse on your ex is b***hmade (Christian's the self-insert, Aster's ginger). Then there's the 'assimilation anxiety' trope that Hollywood made stale a century ago larping as pagan Nords proxying for Right of Return kibbutzim -- it's mid and gross on several levels. picrel above their diner booth: Jane Mansfield right, Catholic, hooked up with Anton Levi, Prohibition Gangster family out of Chicago & probably killed/sacrificed her

It's basically just a slash flick but with some interesting visuals. It's okay.

The only gripe I have with it is from redditgays claiming Flo's BF "deserved it". Christian did nothing wrong. They complain that he was mean to her, but what the frick was he supposed to do? He was tired of dealing with her shit and was this close to breaking up with her until her family all got murder-suicided. Was he supposed to just ditch her at that point even though he doesn't like her? He's between a rock and a hard place, what the frick option is there?

All his behavior stems from the fact that he no longer likes Pugh. But again, what is he supposed to do? Break up with the girl after her entire family just got killed? He was forced to be in the situation and he did the best he could reasonably have done.

The story is really about how she's the real target of the cult because she is vulnerable, essentially being the reject of her friendship group. What happens to her is supposed to be tragic. It's not a revenge flick and it's not meant to be satisfying. The way the ending is filmed is supposed to give you a sense of the euphoric feeling that the cult gave her, but it is clearly intended to be unsettling rather than a YAAS KWEEN moment. The way Christian treats her is kind of shitty but he's not a monster and he obviously didn't deserve to be killed for it.

        Anonymous

I'd go further than that and say the way he treated her wasn't shitty or unreasonable at all. He tried his best, given the scenario. It's one of those things where a normal person really can't 'fake it'. Even then he really tried to be there for the GF as much as a person who doesn't like her could. And it's not like he can magically force herself to be in love with her again. That's not how things work.

For instance, when they first arrive at the cult and they're all about to do shrooms. Christian tells the friends that he and Pugh will pass on doing them. It's Pugh that gives in to the friends' peer pressure; Christian was the one who wanted to protect her and stand by her.

          >who doesn't like her could
Shouldn't have stayed with her for 4 fricking years, motherfricker should have either impregnated her or left her crazy ass. It's obvious it was a one way street in terms of love, she loved him and he was too much of a pussy to break up with her.

So what's the maximum allowed duration you're allowed to date someone before you're no longer allowed to break up with them and need to stay with them forever? They're not fricking married. People fall out of love, grow apart, break up. We don't know how long their relationship has deteriorated. I seriously doubt it's been something he's been wrestling with for 4 fricking years.

And he was going to break up with her. Then her sister sudoku'd herself and the family. It's absolutely reasonable that he wouldn't break up with her at that time because of that.

              >I seriously doubt it's been something he's been wrestling with for 4 fricking years.
I think it's a possibility, the sister was bipolar, so her craziness was there from the beginning, and the GF relying on him was something that he always put up with. In the movie he was really directionless, in his thesis he relied on his black buddy for help before he decided to just steal it with the whole village thing, so I see him as someone who goes along things even if it bites him in the ass.
