Yes, it's more than a little racist to nonsensically "blackify" Thor with nonsense like a graffiti'd Mjolnir, the Astral Hood, and "By Odin's Fade", and yes twitter's super mad about it.

That's the point. They want the comic to be "controversial" and now that "wokeness" is fading from the limelight the way to be controversial is to be racist but with a little plausible deniability.

This is a what if comic

            Anonymous

            its a What If book

You’re literally only crying because Miles is black. What ifs have done shit like this before. What if Barbara Ketch had been Ghosr Rider, what if Punisher had become Captain America, what if Dr. Doom had become Sorcerer Supreme, what if Rogue had become Thor, what if Tony Stark was Sorcerer Supreme, etc. etc.

For fricks sake, Gwen Stacy is literally having the same goddamn idea done in her own book which has Gwen be Thor, Iron Gwen, Captain America. Where’s the major butthurt about that comic? The constant threads whining about that? Nowhere, because she’s white. Meanwhile people keep crying about hip hop Thor.

            >There's nothing interesting about giving him an identity of other heroes

Except these stories are interesting because of how different the Miles version of the character ends up being. And it’s always tied to his family and especially his relationship with his uncle. Family and how it impacts Miles’ life is a major reoccurring theme.

The thing is that for the writer Miles has not enough of an identity to be written in a serious What If.
Like in a possible "Punisher becomes Sorcerer Supreme" you explore Frank dealing with his family dead, trying to play a long suicide and going to kill as much crime scum there is, and then the writer explores what happens if he turns into a magical wizard.
In this comic the only consitency is "Miles is a generic kid with problems" and "uncle and dad play a part".
Not enough to explore his identity or why it's only Miles that happens and not another black guy.
And I say this as a guy that read Ahmed's Miles.

              Anonymous

The reoccurring theme is how his family always defines Miles and turns him into a hero. Either by his dad pushing him away, Miles feeling unworthy, Miles idolizing his uncle who turns out to be no good, etc. It’s a consistent message about importance of family and how they define you.

Yeah, that fricking sucks. I'd actually like some afro-norse story, but I don't believe any even vaguely norse people would tolerate graffiti on any sculpture.

In graffiti culture, tagging over another person's tag is a sign of disrespect. You wouldn't do it unless you were thinking "frick this guy". So, wouldn't tagging over a sculpture of a god be the same thing, but disrespect to the god?

Also, I want Odin to stay white. Don't know why. I don't give a shit about any other god.

It's hilarious and so sad, it's this really supposed to be inspirational? The author vision of an afromerican Asgard is a hood with their own statues tag with graffiti and shoes hanging from power lines? There is something deeply broken within black people in america.

I think afro-norse stuff can work well, and I think the comic is well drawn, but there's just some things that don't seem right to me. I don't think norse people would tolerate graffitiing on statues, and in graffiti culture, its a bad thing to tag over someone else's tag. I feel like that same sentiment would extend to the statues.

That's generally what runes are, right? Just tell them they're modern runes that add spiritual blessings or some supernatural superstition shit. Both the Nords and Nignogs (Nignords?) are a highly superstitious lot.

            Anonymous

But could any guy slap a rune on another guy's work? Actually, graffiti runes sounds like a neat idea, but how much of both culture is being lost by saying "ehhh, just slap some shit on that statue, it'd be fine!".

I assure you this thread has put in more thought into how it could work than the actual writers of this cringe shit, and anons aren't even really trying. Statues are dedications to gods and heroic figures. Runes are embellishments for things like weapons, ritual items, and statues. They're both forms of art but have different roles to play. It could work.

How are graffiti a bad thing? The only issue in the comic is that it’s very lazy because the artist didn’t even even try.

          Anonymous

          >How are graffiti a bad thing?
Not him but it's the way it's done in the comic. Most of the graffiti done is just tags which is gang shit and there is far too much. No one would live with graffiti everywhere if they did have to. I would understand if they were like murals depicting battles or something relevant but most are just names with no real substance.

            Anonymous

Like I said, the issue is entirely that the artist was lazy. But how much effort can you really expect from a random what if miniseries where the creative team changes every issue. The writer probably had way more thought and effort put into the script than the actual artist during the parts depicting Asgard.

I'm obsessed with graffiti. It goes both way
If you look at the crime rate in New York during the 80-90's it did go down after the graffiti got cleaned up. Personally I like a wall slap with a tag now and then, better than a bear wall. I think the graffiti in the comic is excessive, and also disengenuine because none of it are tagger names probably people he knew or worked on the comic similar to graffiti on a Disney cartoon.

So here's a fun graffiti story. Somebody spray painted Jabber jaw, then the park rangers painted over the whole thing white.

But the guy or whoever tagged Jabber Jaw did it again same spot, and I guess the park rangers liked just Jabber Jaw because it's still up to this day

I was wondering why Miles was trending on Twitter right now and it turned out to be because of a lot of tweets like these:

A lot of it is stupid shit like “why does he look old, Miles is like 17” and just reacting to single panels without actually reading the story,or knowing context. So it’s entirely reactionary. Like at one point someone posted concept art of Thor and Storm’s daughter who’s black and this was apparently a bad thing. And just one of these tweets has plenty of engagement. The others were like 21 retweets or comments.

I do agree with certain complaints, like the hammer having graffiti is dumb, especially when it doesn’t have the wording about being worthy.

Miles who is Wolverine wouldn’t act exactly the same way as Miles who is Thor or Miles who is the Hulk. That’s how these multiverse variants always work, dumbass. They have certain core characteristic that is the same, otherwise they’re different. One of the emphasized in this series is Miles’ relationship with his uncle and how it drives and motivates him to do shit or grow as a person. Like how Thor Miles trusts Unca Loki too much until he tries to steal the throne. Or how Unca Sabretooth is how Wolverine Miles breaks from his circle of violence by not killing him and embraces a new family in the form of the X-men, no longer being alone.

The criticism was that Miles doesn’t act or look like Miles, which is stupid because the entire fricking point is depicting Miles as if his origin and powers were that of another iconic Marvel character, and to explore that they’re using his shared common thread, his relationship to his uncle to reflect the differences in and ways Miles would turn out. Instead of a raging monster Hulk Miles is haunted by guilt. Thor Miles is too trusting and doubts himself and his worth until he has to confront his deceptive uncle. Sniktbub Miles is a loner that leaves him weak because he mistook his father’s behavior and has to learn to embrace family and help from others to survive, culminating in finding a new one in the X-men. They’re all interesting reflections of Miles and what differences there are compared to the original Marvel characters whose avatar he uses in these stories.

Yup. That wouldn't change his core personality. You realize that's the whole point of these "What-If" stories, right? To see a character's personality used in the context of a different character's setting/powers?

Miles has no consistent character shown here. This is extremely pathetic of you to defend such empty writing.

                >You realize that's the whole point of these "What-If" stories, right?

No, what if stories exist to do weird shit and one of the most common aspects of them is that the hero just about always acts way out of character in them compared to the original version to get some kind of weird, tacked on closure. Like Matt abandoning his life and living happily ever after if Elektra lived.

Still doesn't square the fact that this thread wasn't about Miles' other "What-If" stories. It's about how laughably racist this one is, in how it just uses stereotypes to prop up Miles' lack of a character.

He doesn't even act like Thor, he acts like "miscellaneous, jive black guy."

It doesn’t do that. It’s doing a fun Asgard meets modern Brooklyn mash up. And again, the point isn’t to be exactly like Thor, he’s intentionally depicted as the opposite of classic Thor in the story to reflect how if Thor was Miles he would act very differently and have different type of dynamic with Loki, who has this mischievous traitor side, but also shows underlying compassion and love towards his nephew.

Did you skip past the never-ending rap references of this Miles' character? The first two fricking pages are narrated in rap. Why?

                Because it's a "black story."

So any time rap or hip hop is used it’s racist? For someone concerned about racism you see, awfully eager to say black people cannot be associated with rap at all. The story is clearly tongue in cheek, you pearl clutcher.

There are no bad storiesonly bad writers. I'm not saying it couldn't be fun, I'm saying I read it and it wasn't fun. The world doesn't feel real to me.

If you think the story wasn’t good, fine. But at least make a concrete criticism why the story didn’t work then. Most criticism here has only been “LOOK AT THIS, BLACK PEOPLE AND RAP REFERENCE?!”or “IT’S RACIST TO DO A WHAT IF LIKE THIS BECAUSE MILES IS BLACK”

probaly reffering about yasuke, a black slave that got sold to Oda Nobunaga.

Not the guy you're responding to but no, that isn't it. It's not just the one thing, but everything in combination.
Look, you can show a black character eating fried chicken and that's fine. People eat fried chicken. It's delicious! But if you also have that black character in "da hood" and he has a "grill" and rap is playing and he's doing hip-hop dance moves and he drinks a forty and he drinks purple drink and he's doing drugs and he's dealing drugs and he's "spitting mad rhymes" and he "gets jiggy with it" and he's eating watermelon and there's graffiti all over the place and he speaks in thick ebonics and he robs a Korean convenience store and he rapes a white girl and he has baby mamas in every area code and his daddy went out for smokes but never came back, well, the combination is a wee bit racially insensitive. Your character is basically just Black Stereotypes Man.
It's over the top that there'd be graffiti on Black Thor's hammer. It's offensive that the moment Asgard has black people, there's suddenly a ghetto for them to live in, like they can't live in nice homes and must live in squalor even when in godland.
Heck, even Black Thor itself is a bit of a stereotype since black superheroes with lightning powers are so common it's a joke. Again, that alone isn't racist, but when you add it up with everything else it's just a bit much. Not sure why I spoilered this but there you go.

But the point is that this is modern day Brooklyn if it was Asgard. Not “it has to be a hood because blacks.” Nothing about the comic is depicting them living in squalor.

Struggle defines the black experience and forms the bedrock for solidarity. It would actually be more offensive to show them living in mansions or something since it would come off as glorification of race traitors.

The thing about Miles is, nobody can even muster up hatred for the character. You'd need something *to* hate but for Miles there is no there, there. He just exists as a mediocre tertiary option, the kid even has his own movie but people are there for Classic Spidey not New-Coke Miles, or even Spider-Gwen over him. Again, nobody hates him, its just that he is nobody's go-to choice when wanting to watch or read about a Spider-person when there are dozens of better options. Even the writers don't know what to do with him.

For virtually all of history they were just kind of there. Their violent tendencies didn't allow for them to cooperate in large enough groups to accomplish anything like a writing system to record their histories of cannibalizing each other. This makes racial differences apparent which in turn makes them feel inferior and that's offensive. And when they get offended they get violent. Black people have no history before Europeans got involved. The only option then is to insert them into European history so that they don't eat us. Yes this is incredibly offensive to everyone else but we're not going to cook anybody on a tire fire about it.

A black writer could've put this out and it would've been as bad. Sure the wigger posturing makes it a little funnier, but let us not forget that Marvel pandering to perpetually angry folks on twatter who do NOT buy comics is what got us into a position where only black people can write black characters, only Mexicans can write Mexicans and only gays can write gays (or at least you shouldn't ask any write writer before you've gone through all the "better" alternatives). I love urban fantasy, but Asgard being set in Brooklyn breaks my suspension of beliefs.

Wouldn't they be native American vikings? Or just vikings? Or pilgrim vikings? Or did no one enter Brooklyn until after the slaves were free?

No this is thinking it, Asgard being in america could make sense as "vinland made asgardians proud" at least.
The only way for this to make sense is that Brooklyn used to be Vinland and then the black slaves arrived and interbreed wirh the people creating a norse black race

First off, everything you just listed originated in white culture. No black in Africa ever wrote a song or made a musical instrument more complex than a drum before meeting other cultures. And just like "black cuisine" which consists of deep fried gizzards and pigs feet, blacks took white music and degraded it and made it into a populist art form.

Now, to be honest, this is honestly probably the coolest thing blacks ever did. Aside from wondering what the music of the big band era might have evolved into if not for the sudden and eventually dominating presence of black influence in popular music, I think we can all agree that Jazz, rock, the blues, etc. are legitimate artistic expressions. And about the only part of black culture I've ever witnessed that addressed any ideas of transcendence.

But that's literally the ONLY thing I ever hear about when it comes to black contributions to culture other than the aforementioned cholesterol cuisine. Where are the great works of literature(that DON'T revolve around some kind of civil rights remembrance or racial grievance), painting(that DON'T resembled moronic postmodern scribblings), cinema(see literature)? Where is any proof that blacks can sustain the culture that some of them are able to ape and imitate in a degraded fashion?

Okay, so you took transcendent, complex music and you degraded it, infused it with ass-twerking jungle beats and fed it back to the culture from where it was spawned. White music. With white instruments. Inspired by white musical theory. Whoop de shit.

Rap is pure 100% bullshit. You can fricking have it. The greatest rappers will all time will always be those three israeli kids from Brooklyn.

Finally, mankind's greatest pianist was a black dude. Bet you never even heard of him.

You know what? I don't even mind this, it's a fine idea and the execution is better than I expected. But there's zero reason for it to be Miles Morales. It feels really reductive and tokenizing in a way that the character has even railed against in-universe back when he was still Ultimate Spider-Man.
Just make Thor Black, he doesn't need to also be another character. Or if he really DOES, use Luke Cage, who's already deep in the Blaxploitation vibes in a way Miles isn't and shouldn't be.

So if you don't like it, start jerking off or beg Marvel to genderswap, you'll enjoy this seeing the exact same cancer lording over Spider-Gwen threads in no time if it works.

        >Punisher becomes Captain America
Interesting concept because Punisher is a psycho mass murdering vigilante given the title of a WWII paragon.
        >Dr. Doom becomes Sorcerer Supreme
Interesting concept because such a title is given to a narcissistic sociopath + science genius as well as magician prodigy. Same with Stark.
Miles is such a blank slate, may as well just have "what if my self-insert was the famous hero" for a story. There's nothing interesting about giving him an identity of other heroes, no reason to think "wow, that's cool. I want to read it to see how that turns out", it's not intriguing or engaging. You know exactly how it's gonna turn out.

Miles's entire personality is that he's black, which is why Miles Thor turned out the way it did.

          >There's nothing interesting about giving him an identity of other heroes

Except these stories are interesting because of how different the Miles version of the character ends up being. And it’s always tied to his family and especially his relationship with his uncle. Family and how it impacts Miles’ life is a major reoccurring theme.

            Anonymous

But it's not interesting. It's just more of the same shit as classic boring-ass Miles, but stealing from a different hero and adding a dash of "how do you do fellow kids"

In other words, the same story but Miles Morales is Black Thor and not Black Spider-Man.
A more interesting What If would remove the family element from Miles entirely and see how he fairs. Probably not so well but then again most What Ifs don't end that great for the hero.

Not that anon, but the problem with your argument:

        >What if Barbara Ketch had been Ghosr Rider,
She was Dan Ketch's sister and her death was part of the reason Dan became Ghost Rider. A story like this would make sense because it asks what if Dan got killed and Barbara ended up becoming Ghost Rider instead.

        >What if Punisher had become Captain America,
The question and drama here is "can a bloodthirsty vigilante find it in himself to be worthy of the mantle of Captain America or will he fall further?" It also works off an established point--what if Captain America was horribly injured instead of simply badly injured after the events of Captain America #212?

        >what if Dr. Doom had become Sorcerer Supreme,

It asks what happens if a villain who has a history of sorcery, to the point where he could've become a candidate for Sorcerer Supreme, got that much power, and how does it affect things. Does he get his mom out of hell? Does he still fight the Fantastic Four? What happens to Doctor Strange? The idea also works off a possible alt point, where instead of seeking monks to get armor and mask, he decided to go find the Ancient One instead.

        >what if Rogue had become Thor,
Which starts on a divergent point of the fight in Avengers Annual #10, so it's also believable. That was the time she had absorbed Carol Danvers' powers, so the question is what would've happened if she had absorbed Thor's powers during the fight and killed him in the process.

        >what if Tony Stark was Sorcerer Supreme,

        This works with two ideas:
-A drunk Tony causes the accident that wrecks Stephen's hands, so Tony's burdened with guilt and has another motivation, and Stephen gradually becomes resentful
-Tony typically doesn't care for magic in the main universe. The story doesn't go into his change of mind much but this could've been a good one to interest people.

Each of these work with an established story and work in a different direction and shows what happens to events and situations when one thing changes.

The only Miles What If that worked was the Hulk one because it stuck to changing just Miles, and then changing situations around. The others don't work because they proceeded to change other characters (Ganke and Tiana Toomes) without explanation, and the Thor one falls apart because there's no explanation why Miles, Ganke, Tiana, and others are Asgardians.

This is a very narrow minded approach to What if stories. Especially in modern Multiverse approach that allows more creative freedom instead of doing lazy just do x instead of y in story z. And these stories all are building to a larger story where the Mileses have to team up together rather than be one and done. The series functions differently and that’s why it works better than most what if stories that are incredibly lazy.

No it doesn't. If anything you're making the Miles What If story sound incredibly lazy by your description. The old What Ifs gave thought to something changing, and then what would be the consequence of that change.

Hell, it's not even hard to do the Miles as Thor comic. There's like several different explanations to work with, and this comic didn't even bother to give an explanation.

Miles doesn't really have an identity or personality of his own. He's got a nice costume, but can't even get his own hero name; he's just "Spider-man".
Truthfully, they wanted to raceswap Thor without seeming racist, so they needed to attach a name to it. But Miles' backstory has nothing to do with this new comic and doesn't effect anything. It's not about an urban youth finding Mjolnir; he's still explicitly Odin's son and Asgard as a whole is just black urban New Yorkers now.

      No.
There are things that are hated both by libs and rights because they fail to appeal one of those group and so become something that no one wants.
For example, latinx is a term hated by libs because it's an attempt to erase a foreign language and rightoids hate it because it's pronouns shit

        Anonymous

        >latinx is a term hated by libs

No, the libs love it. It's just the Hispanics that hate it because it's moronic but the libs refuse to let it go because they're absolutely bound to the progressive identity politics. Some of them are even accusing Hispanics of transphobia because they refuse to use more inclusive language like latinx.

I'm struggling to understand this narration about Yggdrasil. Does it mean that it relocated to modern day Brooklyn, in which case Thor, being thousands of years old, should still be ethnically Northern European? Or is it saying it was there all along? Wouldn't he be like Native American in that case?
And even if Thor spontaneously did become an ethnic member of Brooklyn, why specifically Black? What if he became Italian or an Orthodox israelite instead?
