Although I do remember the commercial had the unintended effect of inspiring sympathy for the guy on the left. Like you're supposed to prefer the cooler, more genetically fortunate, new "stylish" geek, but I think a lot of people felt that the other guy's "faults" were, well, the kind of issues that were not his fault (physical awkwardness, social cluelessness, possible autism)

Microsoft always just had that low-IQ feel. Probably because they were designed for midwit office drones. The UI was counter intuitive and lacked all the elegance and simplicity of that of a Mac. To this day, Microsoft computers give me a "cheap" feeling even when the industry is pretty much level. I'm not a big "computer guy," nor do I know much about computers, but I have never used a Microsoft and I never will.
Remember that episode of Star Trek TNG, "Rascals"? There's a part where the crew are trying to use the computers but all they have are computers made for children that have colorful UIs and limited functions.
That's what a Mac seems like to me. Big colorful buttons, no right click functionality, no ability to go in and edit things in a user friendly way. You're just locked out of your own computer and have this walled garden of stuff you're aloud to use. Iphones are even worse.
PC is functional and user friendly if you want to change properties. Linux is the same thing without being user friendly. Like you can change EVERYTHING but you also have to be a huge nerd.
This was glaringly true about 10 years ago to the point where using any Apple product felt like a personal insult, but the sad thing is nowadays the whole tech industry is going in that direction. Even Windows, which was supposed to be the opposite, doesn't let you control your own computer in any meaningful way. It went from users being given flexible tools to do what they see fit, to inflexible tools being designed to dictate the behavior of the user. Also, forget trying to fix any of your own shit in [current year]
