He really is an amazing animation director but to me his most hateable attribute is how transparently fake his pacifistic philosophy is. He's very much a kid from the post-war era caught between desperate attempts to preserve cultural pride and profound cultural self-loathing that is projected onto others.

Thank you. I so rarely see this sentiment echoed online, but it's so obvious his pacifist persona is pure cope about Japan having lost the war. He's not a pacifist; he just hates that Japan doesn't have imperial power.

Nah, Spirited Away and Ponyo were worse. Haven't seen the new one but it's probably worse too. Howl's Moving Castle is an uber comfy slice-of-life movie disguised as a war story, and features his best character writing since Porco.

I was living in Hong Kong at the time Ponyo was released, it was a huge phenomenon, I'd be sitting on the bus and it'd be playing on the televisions inside the bus, a guys phone would ring and it'd be the theme song, you couldn't escape it even if you wanted to. It was the daily topic of conversation at work, people off work were excited and going repeatedly to see it in the cinema. It was the first time I'd seen something like that, I'll remember it for a long time.

Both are pretty authoritative when they lead teams.
Miyazaki does the storyboards himself, does a lot of corrections and has to okay most work that go into his flicks.
When he was younger he was even more on-hand with discussing the allowed colors for colorists and stuff like that.

You can hear similar things with the younger one nixing certain designs like how the original Undead Dragon was more rotting and grotesque which he said wasn't in line with the dignity of these formerly majestic beings.

Dudes a hack and his movies are boring. Worst of all he is a petty butthole. Best example is when he visited some game studio and the employees were showing him tech demos and one showed an AI movement system- and they used it on a zombie model to have it moved like a sideways worm. Old homosexual goes on a whole exposition about his cripple friend and they should be ashamed of themselves because apparently a zombie corpse crawling is insulting to the disabled. He got most reprimanded and got the guy who made it fired. Total freak.

      >Best example is when he visited some game studio and the employees were showing him tech demos
he would never visit a game studio like that
it was kadokawa's president who made niconico douga and his team showing tech dem just for miyazaki because he was also a producer of studio ghibli at that time. not to mention he's a millionaire.

why are all morons like you? barely know anything and yet so confident

Most people who talk shit about Miyazaki are like that. They rarely even watch the stuff they're seething over.
From what I recall the very next scene in that doc is some CG stuff for Boro.

      Anonymous

Dwango has worked with Ghibli on shows and the translations of that scene are vastly overstating the issue.
Miyazaki is mostly saying that he finds it personally disturbing and reminds him of his friend who is highly physically disabled before saying he would never want something like that in his works and the Dwango guys were saying it was an experiment and not something meant to be presented publicly which Miyazaki said he more or less understands. I've seen nothing even hinting at anyone being fired for that.

Personally I think it was just more "auteur" PR for Boro the Caterpillar at the time, they usually drum up some pseudo-drama to remind people that a) Ghibli exists, b) is releasing a new movie and c) there's always a new Ghibli documentary that touches on the drama.

        Anonymous

you know what? the guy who showed miyazaki that tech demo was also a producer of that documentary
he was even explaining why he didn't remove that part from the documentaly on twitter
he was the president of kadokawa and a producer of ghibli at that time and it's not like his entire team was working for ghibli so it was nothing to him

lmao I didn't know that but yeah not that surprising.

Miyazaki never attended the Academy awards. He's in-fact famous for refusing to accept an academy award for Spirited Away, and (un-fricking-surprisingly) didn't attend this year's academy award and didn't accept his second Oscar. The shot from OP is from another event he attended (2014 Governor's awards) which he attended and received an award.

It's gotten far worse over recent years due to the lack of people posting gore to drive away newbies, Anons who spoonfeed, no culture of lurking before posting anymore. All of those things helped filter out the type of person who had no interest in discussion but only wanted to participate in dramagayging.

Monster House might be the one 3D motion capture animated movie that actually looks good. It's a great Halloween movie, even worth a yearly viewing around the time.

Happy Feet is also great, it's aggressively 2006 and I feel like that's where a lot of appeal comes from. Felt like the final year sports like surfing, skateboarding, BMX, etc. were still fairly popular to the public.

This would've easily been the winner of year 2000.

I love Chicken Run but I'd still put Emperor's New Groove over it.

What was the “last” W&G movie before they became CG? Did W&G ever end up getting pozzed? Is it still going?

I watched the most recent Shaun of the sheep movie.
All the background characters were blak or Indian…

Funny because in reality darkies rarely leave the large towns & cities.

The initial three feel like the "real" ones to me. There was a ten year gap before Were Rabbit, and it just didn't feel quite the same. More of an engineered family film, as opposed to some guy's pet animation project.

Dreamworks put more crude jokes into it, I still think it was great but Loaf and Death sucked.

If he was a pedo then the underwear would be form fitting wouldn't it?

All japs love sexualizing little girls, not sure if pedo is even a thing there and e-girlcon doesn't count.

lol this I almost feel bad hating on these movies because at least the old ones a lot of artistic talent went into making them but the final product was boring shit every time even though the landscapes and foliage and dumb vehicles the characters had looked cool.

Have people finally been willing to acknowledge that while his movies are very pretty they've all had the same nothing 'plot' for going on 4 decades now? It's the same movie over and over.

I didn't know he showed up in '05. He won it in '01 with Spirited Away, but didn't show up. I guess that explains why Howl's is essentially Spirited Away 2 lol

Why are people so obsessed with him? He's an old and bitter pedo, a Walt Disney wannabe, and Hollywood appreciated him only because his works were similar to a certain degree to Walt Disney's works but with asian quirks
