I liked it. Very nice animation, story was alright (Don't know why the Beard guy wanted to do the job and seemed fine with not being paid, but whatever) and I would like to see more.

      >(Don't know why the Beard guy wanted to do the job and seemed fine with not being paid)

Prolly just a simple good guy that prefers to be professional and sticking to what he signed on for rather then change course because it's technically "easier" to just brain someone then to see a troublesome contract to the end.

Plus it would be super shorter otherwise.

That's sounds like something they forgot to establish.

he says at the start that they need to do contracts and work up in the board so its not too far fetched to think exactly that

      Anonymous

Could've been explained better, but I think it has to do with that galactic ranking or whatever that he pointed to in the beginning. He seems to care more about better standing = better jobs than quick money.

        Anonymous

yeah he was thinking long term about getting good jobs consistently and ended up losing an immediate payout big enough to be worth the time of a top rank assassin.
no idea exactly how far ten million pixels goes in setting or how much selling out a client would have set them back in merc rankings but they definitely lost a fat check over maybe getting paid well after years if not decades of risking their lives and losing a lot of what they get on the way in building the business.
hell just selling him to the cat or lizard for a fraction of the bounty may have been enough obfuscation to escape any repercussions.

For 24 minutes it could have had more story beats/more content and hell they even used one of music sequences to speed up through content. The plot could had been told in 10 minutes. I was expecting faster and more action sequences
Audio quality was very imbalanced at times either the SFX wasn't loud enough, the music wasn't loud enough, the music choice was weird, the voice acting wasn't wasn't loud and clear enough(everyone was recording in different rooms through different mics), but despite all these complaints holy fricking shit that was great.

This is a better Guardians of the Galaxy and Earthworm Jim than them.

I thought the same thing. the story could have been told in less time and i think the animation would benefit from that

        Anonymous

Yeah, you could easily make a 10 to 15 minutes episode with this same story without losing anything.

I'm woking on a pitch pilot aimed for 6 mins I'm at 8. Setting up the world, characters, tone, plot, pacing, and jumping off point, is a pain in ass but achievable under 10mins. For them they wanted to pack everything in the episode yeah it's too long and they should have written act breaks in mind for the pace and tense. It could have been condensed down easily and made like 3 shorts. So I'm unsure if they are looking for studios to be picked up because it looks like they just want crowd funding.
I love the hand drawn animation because brickleberry in space wants me to die.

Well, that was a great cartoon.

Welp, that was fine... I guess
Most of the voices were very well mostly Tyneen. But Sanchez's voice, although there were parts where he was funny and acted well, there were others where he was shit, mainly when he combined Spanish with English... it felt a bit forced As a Ñ person, the fact that almost in every sentence ended with a "amigo" gave more cringe than laughter. There should be an average point between saying Spanish words and speaking English.

Guy's clearly still taking points from Zeur's Cheech and Chong days. I think it's a matter of just not being part of that generation.

I mean I grew up with Cheech voicing all those Disney characters, so his slipping between English and Spanish seems natural to me.

I think Sanchez's voice is exaggerated for the sake of character, since he seems like a pretty neurotic guy it makes sense that his speech patterns would align with that

    >make a movie special quality animation
    >call it episode 1

I keep seeing these pilots that go so fricking far out with the animation, and it looks great, but that's actively a mark against it if its meant to be picked up for a series because its so hard to reproduce. on a season by season basis. Why not just call them what they are: OVA specials?

      Anonymous

      >Why not just call them what they are: OVA specials?
Because they're actively looking to get picked up for a series, not be a one-and-done special, why else? Animation for shows are usually downgraded when they get picked up for a series anyway, just look at any of the pilots available online for shows that came out during the 2010s and you'll see that. The animation used here is just to catch people's attention. Hell, in today's day and age, it's probably even more likely that people aren't even looking to get picked up by a network, instead throwing out pilots to see what people like and attracts them to donate to their patreons for more. With the shitloads of money crowdfunding like this tends to bring in, people have more than enough to hire more animators to ease the workload.

The humor was really bland. Like just boring and you could see it coming a mile away.

The animation was great. I liked the designs and fluidity.

I didnt like the VAs. Lots of them were in that ugly zone between amateur and professional. There was something inhibiting the sound, likely they had a good mic but weren't recording in a good space.

Man I gotta rewatch that now for comparison, but yeah I agree that Shrikes new voice isn't that great. Nothing against the whole spanish shtick, but the fact that he often drops volume and mumbles to himself makes him really hard to listen to as a non-native speaker.

They're both just less cartoony, and the cartoonyness is what I liked about the characters.

I think Zeurel made a similar mistake to a lot of the amateur pilots, spending so much time practicing a skill "going big" is just more better animation.

The montage bit in the center is really strong, he's really good at that. But lots of little things like the sign in the background at the start having super high contract pulling attention away from the characters for no reason.

I really want someone who's not vivipop to succeed in this sphere but they all keep spending too much money and putting it in the wrong spots.

I mean, I really don't wanna shit on zeurel, but that's what I felt too having watched it. It just kinda didn't do anything for me, and the color of bg/characters was so saturated that they kept competing with each other.

        >maybe it's a matter of low publicity
pretty sure its that. JoelG got very lucky when it comes to publicity (getting through both the ENA shorts and the margo/ula ones) and vivzie also had the benefit of the whole kickstarter shebang bringing in attention.

i sure as fricking hell hope zeurel's project gets more attention, its fantastic

        Anonymous

Ironically both ENA, Vivzie and other artists had previous projects that failed due to being in generic settings with not memorable protagonist designs just like is happening to Zeurel, maybe the solution is trying a more specific and developed setting like they did.

Joel gained a following doing cringe kid show parodies, which later transitioned into coombait animated shorts, and then culminated in creating ENA, which stands out from other animation on Youtube by being a surreal abstract fantasy. I don't know the guy who made this but I assume he didn't go the same trajectory.
Also, The Legend of Pipi came out around the same time and that got 600K views, so maybe it's just bad algorithm

The problem is the MC worm is unlikable. There's nothing to get hooked on. Even his partner bara bear is more interesting. When your MC is mogged by literally everyone else, you have a core problem.

                Anonymous

It's a simple clean art style, and the first few seasons were flat out well written and interesting (rick wasnt a god yet like in s3 onward).

Also he made a few youtube mistakes. The opening first 5 seconds being a warning screen will turn people off from watching, and the whole opening scene being so dark and saturated makes it hard on the eyes.

                Anonymous

Rick and Morty are a duo with much more contrast. A genius, hedonistic superscientist who's seen it all paired with an awkward, horny teenage boy amazed (or traumatized) by the crazy new adventures he's roped into makes for plenty of comedic potential.

Beebs & Shrike are just two best buds on similar standing. One is chill and plays it by the rules, while the other is more brash and impulsive. But they're ultimately just two dudes.

              Anonymous

I think the fact that he doesn't really go through a character arc at all in this episode is what kills it. Okay, sleazy selfish earthworm jim is a decent starting point, but they don't go anywhere with it. You don't really see it build up to anything other than him getting frustrated, he doesn't learn anything about himself or the people around him, the obvious conflict between what him and the beard guy want isn't explored so their dynamic isn't tested at all and you don't see why they actually stick with eachother. The writing is only serviceable enough to make sense but it's not actually thought out enough to be good.

                Anonymous

I disagree that he needs a character arc in what is essentially a pilot. You can't have him turn over a new leaf if you intend to have a series about a dickwad. Unless you have a show like American Dad where it just resets at the end and he learned no permanent lessons by just letting the morals roll off them like water for the next episode.

It seems more like the kind of show where an butthole just suffers for his butthole-ishness, and you can revel in that karma. Seems like it's just an introduction to these characters and I'm fine with that.

I thought the animation and designs were fun and well done but the voice acting (and the sound design in general) was a bit poorly done in some places and the jokes were hit or miss, plus I feel like they could have cut it down by like 5-10 minutes and it would have really helped the pacing. I didn't like it that much overall but I can't deny that it has a ton of potential if they were to tighten some stuff up in the future

I haven't been following Monkey Wrench's pilot development too closely, so this was a pleasant surprise. While there might've been a few pacing issues, the episode overall was impressive. Plenty of funny jokes, fricking amazing visuals, and Shrike managed to not be as annoying as I'd originally feared.

Zeurel clearly wants to do more with this, so here's hoping he can build an audience even half as big as Vivzie's.

One of the reasons I'm interested in Monkey Wrench is seeing how many of these old elements listed here survived. The whole pulling-stuff-out-of-head thing is obviously still there, but I wonder if the white ghost Shrike still lives in the newer incarnation.

While this pilot was cool and all, I worry that it doesn't exactly stand out enough. I could make the longest fricking list of indie pilots and webcomics revolving around outer space adventures; almost as long as ones revolving around a typical D&D-inspired fantasy setting. The bounty hunter premise also feels like a concept that's been done many many times in recent years.

Literally the best Zeurel can hope for is for Beebs & Shrike to be main characters who are entertaining enough to keep people excited for more of their adventures, but so far they feel like a duo we've seen countless times before. Without fresh or engaging characters, your cliffhangers and hints at future LORE can only do so much.

Funny, I really like this design more than the final one in Monkey Wrench. His fingers look less disgusting without those dark brown triangle fingernails and his face looks a lot more sleek and charming with a that chin and no dark brown areas around his eyes. I guess this headshape was too close to Earthworm Jim though.

Yeah, and there's no shame in that. Same thing with Monty Oum. RWBY was made cause he just wanted to animate cool fight scenes, the world/setting/etc was secondary and he left it to others. Unfortunately those others were complete hacks, but the fights were still cool.

It came out at the worst possible time and was completely overshadowed by one of the biggest animation announcements this year. No one wants to give 30 minutes of their time to check out an original indie project, but people won't hesitate to go on and on about some vague new reboot we won't get any clear updates on for at least another year.

Not having a cute girl as one of the main leads also hurts it.

One can only hope. There isn't a worse feeling than seeing a popular, long-running classic from yesteryear get brought back when a totally separate project that was cut short still shows no sign of getting revived. I'm not against more Powerpuff Girls if McCracken really wants to make it, but I definitely don't need as much as I do a final season of Wander.

Long Gone Gulch became irrelevant after a few months, and that had TONS of buzz around it. If an indie pilot from two universally revered industry artists that featured BW—a character that SCREAMS waifubait—as well as fricking Jack Spicer in the main voice cast managed to become old news, then things aren't looking too good for Monkey Wrench…

I was struggling to think of where I had seen those controls before. I knew it had to be something on Adult Swim/Toonami.

He lost the OCT, you're going to have to find the other artist's entries to get the cannon... If they didnsperg out and delete everything like every OCT competator ever seems to do.

well frick, i like the english talking sword and the chap underneath oc venom.

okay second question, what happened to the monkey wrench crew after they got to earth and it being basically a dead planet?

Gotta admit, I got a little chuckle out of that. I don't really think either of these characters should come back, but nice to them as a little Easter egg for those that watched his really early stuff.

He unlisted all sponsored chink tablet reviews kek. Guess he was scared that if Monkey wrench blows up and people find out that he shilled chink tablets to kids

      Anonymous

What exactly is the point of unlisting videos? can they just not outright delete them?

        Anonymous

Unlisting is almost the same as deleting because people can't access it if they don't know the exact url. I just happened to have watched it before and looked through my browsing history to find it.

      Anonymous

That's a weird assumption to make considering that all those tablet reviews are still available via a playlist on his channel.

Maybe he just wants his channel to be exclusively animation stuff?

I think the worst part about this short is how it's basically just his earlier works but longer. I don't fricking get it, how can this dude have a decade more of experience but still not understand how to write a basic interesting plot that isn't bloated? His animation nor the coomerbait can save this boring, meandering pilot. What is it with animators thinking they can write, what is it with people thinking they don't need lead writers?

  88. 2 years ago

What do you think the cost to animate this was?

Ah cool, he's got himself some kinda pocket dimension planted in his head. Didn't even notice it on the first watch. What's the story behind that?

      Anonymous

The old lore was that he is an experimental weapons factory, but the pocket dimension entrance was a third eye on his forehead that also contained a white ghost version of himself that caused mischief. He would also get headaches from pulling weapons out.
No clue how it works now, but I'd imagine he at least kept the experimental weapons factory part to bring it up as a backstory plot in a later episode.

I enjoyed! Great animation and gags. Then again, I'm a sucker for Sci-Fi space fantasy adventures. I do have to agree with the comments on the voice acting sounding a bit wonky at times (Can't expect them all to have professional sound recording setups at home though.), but it does the job.

I'll have to throw some dough to their patreon and hope another episode comes from it.
