It's kind of strange how the original 1960s Planet of the Apes had prominent female ape characters, whereas in these new movies made in a supposedly more progressive time the only relevant ape characters are all male, the only female characters are helpless humans.

I really can’t help but feel there’s some weird sexual undertones to the whole business

The new movies the focus is on male apes and with this one a female human. Make of that what you will

FRICKING HATE WAR boring prison camp bullshit while I had already got tired of seeing Woody Harrelson by then and now avoid anything he's in like Nic Cage. • 2 weeks ago
              Anonymous

I figured they'd stick with the "blue eyes= nobility" motif that they had going by literally relating this new character to Caesar. Since he seems to retread a lot of the plot beats of the old films ("Apes together strong", "killing humans is bad", etc), it'd make sense to get people back into the franchise.

This is all conjecture, though. I'm just commenting on the patterns I'm seeing.

If the theory pans out, it'll be interesting to see how Scarface wrested power away from Caesar's dynastic lineage.
I hope they do something cool with it.

                >it'll be interesting to see how Scarface wrested power away from Caesar's dynastic lineage.
                >Nearly 300 years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017),[1] ape civilizations have emerged from the oasis to which Caesar led his fellow apes, while humans have regressed into a feral, primitive state. When the ape leader, Proximus Caesar, perverts Caesar's teachings to enslave other clans in search for remnants of human technologies, Noa, a common chimpanzee, embarks on a harrowing journey alongside a young human named Mae to determine the future for apes and humans alike
Don't know if the bloodline will be in the plot, but the whole eye thing is a good catch. Also Proximus Caesar (literaly means Next Caeser) is played by Kevin Durand. His acting seems pretty good in the trailer, he always striked me as "what if Christopher Walken skipped the acting lessons and went into the roid path".

Man of Steel didn't do as well as expected, and audiences didn't notice her because her character was kind of butch, so she just sort of fell off of Hollywood's radar. If Snyder had made MoS a slightly better movie, or even if she had simply had a slightly better haircut when playing Faora, she might have become a household name.

I always wanted her to talk more during MoS cause her character design and suit looked really interesting. I agree about her butched up look, but I thought it looked pretty good for a villian-esque outfit.

She was in Dark on Netflix for all 3 seasons. She was good in it (and looks exactly the same despite being in her forties, good genes)

I watched Dark season 1 and really enjoyed it, but I must have missed her somehow. I'll go back and try to pick her out. Thanks anon!

I think they might be playing the long game with these. At the end of this latest movie, they'll probably hint at time travel to connect them to the original franchise.
Or at the very least, come across the remains of a space ship in a post credit scene.

I'll be fine with any connection to the originals except a CGI Charlton Heston.
But given his politics, I doubt Fox/Disney would include him in anyway.

They mention the ship Icarus vanished in space in the very first movie of this series both on radio and newspaper in rise of the planet of the apes. It’s not some major plot point just a brief mention that they disappeared completely

        My guess is

        >a sequel or two from now
        >turns out the crew went into a wormhole and fell forward in time, crash lands on earth but they don’t realise it’s earth because literally none of their communications would work
        >we get modernised remake of the general plot line of the original planet of the apes, just with more ape centric scenes
        >perhaps the astronauts help lead the humans to rebel similar to the first few Apes movies had Caesar to get the apes to rebel

Didn't the first movie have a news story in the background about a manned mission to space?

          Damn! Nice catch anons.
I was mostly theorizing, based on what I knew about the older story and my cynicism about modern reboots.
But if they bring this plot point back as an easter egg that would be a really fricking cool way to tie-in with the old films.

I was thinking that the new blue-eyed actress had some connection with the space crew (since the apes said she was "too smart" in the trailer)

I don’t even recall why the humans would be stupid in this canon.

In the original movies humanity devolved because they destroyed themselves in nuclear war, they lost the institutions necessary to keep higher education. While the apes mutated and became smarter. The reasons humans were so stupid in the original planet of the apes movies is because they were intentionally subjugated by the apes, denied education, and literally lobotomised if they spoke out and showed intelligence. That was a whole major plot point with the lady scientist ape claiming she believed they could be smart, and it turned out the senior apes already knew this and were trying to keep it under wraps.

It’s been a while since I watched these new movies, but I’m pretty sure the virus only kills (most) humans right? It doesn’t make the survivors stupid. So not sure why she would be special in being of normal intelligence. It’s harder to imagine humans would become cavemen so quickly. The knowledge of simple shit should still be around. Even if you can’t maintain satellites and advanced stuff

They're dumber because they've had all their major institutions destroyed and are just living to survive. After several generations of that naturally they'll get dumber.

                Anonymous

Yes, but why dumber than the apes? The humans would still be able to pass simple generational knowledge like language, reading, how to make fire and tools etc.

The way they speak in this trailer it’s like the humans went from humans we know from the last movie where they still were smart and had functional military junta’s, to ooga booga cavemen

                Anonymous

Depends on a lot of factors. With all modern infrastructure destroyed and being hunted apes everyone is going to die a lot younger, and less and less generational knowledge gets passed down. It's not hard to imagine a situation where many humans are losing their parents as they're becoming teenagers and have barely learned anything.

In the third movie, it's explained that humans that had a immunity to the virus, which was like 1% of people, still carried the virus in their bodies and the virus mutated to affect their higher functions causing them to become mute and possibly dumbing them down if allowed to progress. Woody's character was killing anyone that showed any signs of the disease before it could progress.

Ahhh thank you. I think I vaguely remember that plot line. So I guess the humans naturally just lost mental capacity over time and generations especially without purging the humans who did show the virus affected their brain.

There’s so many of these movies it”s easy to forget details

I guess the question now is

                >is this girl literally just special because she isn’t mute and has normal intelligence?
                >Will there be a mcguffin from her or perhaps the space crew to find some kind of anti virus serum to allow humans to be intelligent once more?

Probably something like “her blood is the cure!”. That’s always popular

I recall there were leaks months ago for this movie and as someone said in the thread, she might belong to a group of humans who still have their mental faculties who live underground to find some kind of weapon, possibly a warhead. Which, if you've watched the original movies would tie into the second film.

Also as for a weapon. A nuke would be pretty meh. I guess if they’re updating stuff they could be making an anti ape virus to try and take back the world.

Would work better on a thematic level. The original movies were all about muh nuclear weapons bad. Nowadays viral warfare is more relevant, and it’s easy to see how some anti monkey virus could easily mutate and kill all humans too

It does. The survivors in the most recent film developed a mutated gene that allowed them to survive the monke virus, but regressed their brains to something more primitive.
Caesar and Orangutan encounter a human child near a survivor outpost that has lost the ability to speak and she becomes something of a pet/companion for the group. It was really wild.
This loss of speech eventually affects the other human survivors, including the military in the outpost who kill Caesar

Way back then I assumed it was just a fun Easter egg and maybe it was, but since rnpvies have been so consistently successful it makes sense to eventually have it brought back around.

Just have the movie start with the astronauts, they hear there’s “some trouble” on earth with a virus or whatever but should continue their mission

We as the audience already know but it will be fun seeing them realise this isn’t some bizarre distant world it was… EARTH ALL ALONG

In the OG planet of the apes, the ape race seemed like they could all breed together regardless of whether they were gorillas, chimps, orangutans etc

In this they were clearly separate breeds even after being uplifted. So logically shouldn’t be able to breed together

Is this still the case or can they mix now?

Be interesting if only because I can imagine they have various breeds as societal castes for jobs. Gorillas for soldiers etc. especially as they gradually get more and more of an advanced society.

Hating humans being their only way to keep themselves unified and not having a gorilla uprising because they’re not allowed to help govern and shit makes sense

      Thats a cool idea.
And did you notice the monkettes with the burkas on who had to bow before the king? (they have red ochre paint on their foreheads)
It seems like they've developed ritual dress or some standards surrounding female nudity, too.

I'm looking at the poster and it seems like evil monke has green eyes, but in the trailer, it looks like he has regular monke eyes. Can anyone tell? Will that play some kind of part in the story seeing as how much they would focus on Caesar's eyes?

Yup, in the thrown room scene where he is monologuing about learning, you can see his eyes are green. Not sure what part it will take in the larger narrative though.

        *throne room

        I hate modern autocorrect!

        >it'll be interesting to see how Scarface wrested power away from Caesar's dynastic lineage.

Damn, they might end up stumbling on some warheads after all! Seeing as how theyre digging in human wreckage, its only natural they'd find some weapons.

        >what if Christopher Walken skipped the acting lessons and went into the roid path".
I'm imagining buff Christopher Walken and its the best thing ever.

      says

Those government bunkers are insanely huge, have decades of food and water, generators, living quarters, labs, etc

Plus the astronauts will likely be the only “pure” humans not infected with the virus left so might be the best chance to find a way to stop it
