Which moron manchild does this quote come from? There was no le badass rebel cause for the elephant, just stress, bloodlust, fear and pain. Believe it or not being slowly shot to death in a strange place full of loud noises was infinitely worse for that elephant than the cruellest beatings she got from her handler.

Elephants are pretty intelligent and have senses we don't fully understood. One in india killed a woman after it escaped its enclosure and then came to her funeral to her trample her body again
          https://youtube.com/shorts/c-SUKgyXDAM?feature=share

In africa, there was a guy called the elephant whisperer who had a close bond with the elephants on his reserve. He had a heart attack out of the blue and the elephants came from ages away to his house to mourn him. They come to his house every year on the day he died to mourn him

              >When Anthony died of a heart attack, the elephants, who were grazing miles away in different parts of the park, travelled over 12 hours to reach his house. According to his son Jason, both herds arrived shortly after Anthony's death. They hadn't visited the compound where Anthony lived for a year and a half, but Jason says "in coming up there on that day of all days, we certainly believe that they had sensed it"

Hurt a kid and you'll get ostrazised if not locked up for life. Hurt an animal and you're getting ready for a BBQ party.

I think it's because animals lack the societal protection that kids do. In that sense they're more helpless.

Maybe because humans play a wicked game of pretend (society) and animals are and always will be out of it. So we don't see them as wicked but as beings doing what they were born to do. So when we bring them into our game it always feel wrong.
Although I extend this to kids as well as they are not fully integrated in the game so it might be something different in your case.
