        MMA isn't a martial art

          Anonymous

At this point it is, as you would approach an MMA fight in the same general way, not standing too upright and staying light on your feet.

            >as you would approach an MMA fight in the same general way
Absolutely not. Style is still the deciding factor in most MMA fights, it's just that there's more overlap among fighters now. That's why you often see a rock paper scissors situation.

              Anonymous

It's true styles make fights but winning in MMA more to do with playing to your strengths, If you're a great grappler but shit on the feet and I'm a good grappler but technical savant I could negate your grappling and win the decision or get the finish. there aren't too many fighters in the UFC that only fight in one style exclusively that is just stupid.

              Anonymous

No way. MMA is integrated now and has been for years. Some of the top fighters have no base style and have been in MMA since day 1.

                Anonymous

More integrated yes. Fully integrated absolutely not. How could you possibly say that when you have Alex Pereira able to come into MMA and win 2 titles within a few years? Top fighters still have glaring fundamental weak spots in their games.

Being big is an acceptable substitute for being able to grapple well at those literal garbage weight classes. Sean O'Malley has no foundation style at bantamweight, a real division.
Anyway you don't grapple the same in mma as grappling only, or strike the same as in Muay Thai or whatever. It's its own thing.

Muay Thai is superior to MMA. They train for striking and practical "grappling" (i.e. knocking opponents down on the ground so they can pummel them.)

they train by standing there and hoping they get a lucky hit in
In reality, the average boxer would murder them

in a real fight, that's usually may have you jumped, it's better to keep moving than to roll on concrete

Alright then go challenge an MMA fighter to a no holds barred street fight. I'm sure you'll win right? You'll probably throw dirt in his eye like a ninja and put him down with a nut shot. Easy. You should do it.

Infinitely less useful than being able to effectively grapple and control another person. What are you going to do when your buddy gets a little rowdy at the bar, rake his fricking eyes out and collapse his trachea? Krav Maga shit is just silly and impractical. If you ever need to defend yourself to that degree you'd obviously just carry a gun.

Grappling isn't all that useful on the street. That being said it's a good thing to know, especially if you don't want to catch a case. I just hate how MMA caters to grapplers. It makes matches so boring.

                Anonymous

It is very useful and absolutely essential to know. If you only know striking that leaves you prepared for 50% of a fight. If some guy bigger and stronger than you decides he's going to tackle you, you're absolutely fricked. You aren't going to eye gouge or nut shot your way out of it. You are completely subject to the will of another man.

              >sport
People always say this and it's always fricking stupid. You know what martial art used to big back in the day? Archery. Everyone used to train in it and big, eloquent books were written about it. Fights with bows and arrows were commonplace and archery training was 100% what we these days would call "for da streetz bro" and practical as frick. Then guns were invented and archery became a sport because people still wanted to do it out of interest in cultural heritage or just for fun, and nowadays if someone said to you they could teach you "street archery" for "real fights" you'd think they were an idiot because real fights have been won with guns instead of bows for the past 500 years.
You know what martial art beats Muay Thai? Pepper spray. It also beats karate chopping dudes in the throat, eye pokes, and even ball kicking. Get real you wannabe tough guy homosexual. A 79 year old woman with a $20 can of OC spray could BTFO a "real fighter" no less easily than she could a 14 year old that does taekwondo.

Muay Thai is based but it's still mostly dominated by brown asian manlets who mostly look the same and have weird names. It doesn't have centuries of history like boxing did in Europe and such, hence it doesn't have the same cultural impact. We'll probably see more MMA movies because of UFC so that's probably as close as we're gonna get
