The whole point of her character design is she's a cute teen goth (a primarily white fashion that promotes pale skin verging on sickly) since it's the youthful juxtaposition against Death usually being depicted as a stern old man or scary skeleton and ironically dressing herself in a fashion often seen as being frivolous about mortality. Now she is styled as just another mid-30s black woman with dark lipstick. If they must make her black at least make her a cute teenage black goth.

this one thing doesn't bother me. what bothers me is that she didn't have the eye makeup near the corner of her eye. it bothers me that morpheus wasn't pale enough

the problem is that it raceswapped/genderswapped like 4 or 5 characters (i would have been fine with one or two) and the shit wasn't animated.

i didn't watch it (not being animated) is for the same reason i didn't watch live action cowboy bebop

Comics are writing AND art. Did people like the writing? Yes, obviously. But people loved the visual element as well. People loved Death not for being "white" but for being an extremely visually striking character, a surprisingly cute young monochrome punk goth, something highly unexpected for a depiction of "Death."

He replaced that with someone I could walk past in the street without giving her a second look. It's an insult to the artists he worked with to say I'm racist for thinking they dropped the ball with how they depicted Death. We went from something that truly stood out to something utterly forgettable. I close my eyes and cannot remember what Netflix Death looks like.

          Anonymous

Desire isn't nonbinary. Rather, he/she is in a literal sense, but that's not how the term is used in real life. Desire is a hermaphrodite, and entirely inhuman. You're right about the appearance, though, the actor is just an ugly man in garish makeup.

Cinemaphile stopped carrying about Selloutman the Moment he told long time fans to not watch it. apparently to Neil you where supposed to binge watch it, which I am pretty sure Netflix Normies did. Remember that first week? Number one watched show on Netflix in a month after Stranger Things, or any real competition for views, but still up to this day Stranger Things still get more views, and has remained in the to 10 for 17 weeks in a row while Sandman is about to be bumped of it.

Lets face it that audience he was targeting failed him to get him recognized, and the ones that where his fans where thrown out. so he has nothing left now. "Coraline" is about the only thing he didn't frick up cause he had nothing to do with it, American God was a waste of 3 season. He will probably Adapt "Death: The High Cost Of Living" in to some New Netflix show or, Sell out even further to Marvel an adapt "Marvel 1602" what ever the case I not watching anything from him anymore.

Because the visual is a monochrome character that's albino-white with all-black clothing, black hair, and black makeup. It immediately catches the eye. It's the most memorable visual in the comic, more iconic even than Morpheus himself.

There are characters that can be cast with a "Raceswap" without making a difference. You want Rose to be white? Eh, sure, fine, whatever. You want to do that with the character that sticks out precisely because she's got a clash of white and black going on in her design? No, that's stupid as frick.

And it was stupid as frick when they downgraded Deadpool's Domino into a black woman with a patch of vitiligo too. We can make more diverse adaptations without sacrificing great imagery. They're not trying.

      Anonymous

I actually didn't mind black domino because the vitiligo was slightly clever. Not only that but she stayed true to her character and the creators didn't blame people for not liking it DUE to domino being black. It just sorta was what it was.

        Anonymous

It was a visual downgrade of epic proportions, one of the more absurd examples of film-makers ditching things that are visually striking in favor of things that are "down to earth" (ie forgettable as frick).

          Anonymous

well many wild comic book art choices have been scrapped for being more down to earth. Wolverine hasn't worn his blue and yellow in a hot minute because while it is striking and identifiable on a comic page, its cheaper to throw him in a tank top and jacket. The real disappointment of Sandman is that it did no effort to recreate the comic's visuals which was half - 90% of the draw of the comic. Conversely, Domino being super pale with a black spot on her eye was not one of the core draws to deadpool's comics.

            Anonymous

No small part of that is that she's only peripherally a Deadpool character. She was more an X-Force character, and her visuals WERE a big draw for that book in its heyday.

  26. 2 years ago

Robert Pattison at home and Black Death aren't a draw and killed the hype. If Death was a cute unaturally white goth I'd have binged it.
