        Bendis seething.
Oh, you mean in-universe story context?
        >Octavius' wife sold the rights to his story to Hollywood, which led a a fiction portrayal of Avi Arad to making a Spider-Man
        >naturally as Ultimate Spider-Man is mostly anonymous (how it works? don't ask. Obviously it's a much different movie from what we've got from Raimi IRL) an interview with either Arad or Raimi is shown on TV, claiming that Spider-Man IRL is a loser (it was worded more politely, but the message is the same) and that's why he hides behind a mask and other such nice things
        >an interview Peter sees which sends him into a typical rage fit leading to this scene

Most modern Spider fans have no idea that he barely spent ANY time in high school in the actual comics and just assume him becoming an adult was very recent.

I doubt Bendis was genuinely upset over the Raimi flicks but if he was it’s likely due to how it took a lot of elements from his book without credit. (Genetically altered spider at Oscorp, Peter and Harry being high school buddies, Peter having a thing for MJ prior to meeting Betty or Gwen, etc.)

This was pretty tasteful and goes well with overall storyline of being more heroic.

This is just shitty and really petty on Bendis' part. He can seethe all he wants but Raimi's Spider-man will always be the more beloved iteration.

This is not a point at all. The author chose to create the universe in this way; and that choice was informed by being a gay.

I think the manifesto was written to appeal to the publisher at the time, who had fired the previous editor-in-chief because the X-Men comics didn't see any boost in sales from the movie, and this was chalked up to its being too continuity-heavy and not enough like the film version (we now know most comics don't see a boost from movies, of course; the reason X-Men comics didn't sell in 2000 is they were mostly terrible).

So Morrison's pitch is to incorporate as much movie stuff as they can without going so far as to reboot the whole thing, along with fixing the things that were obviously wrong with the comics in 2000 (old-fashioned writing style, confusing to new readers, etc)

          >who had fired the previous editor-in-chief because the X-Men comics didn't see any boost in sales from the movie
They gave this as the official reason for the firing, but there were internal leaks at the time which said there was a lot more to it than that, basically ideological differences between the EiC and the company's new president on how Marvel should be run, Marvel's owner demanding that the EiC fire a longtime editor, and him not doing it.

You guys don't realize those movies were over brother. The first X-Men and Spidey movies are why we have capeshit movies regularly now instead of every now and then when someone feels like making a Batman or Superman movie.

        >who had fired the previous editor-in-chief because the X-Men comics didn't see any boost in sales from the movie

Jemas was an insane butthole and Morrison's rarely open about wishing ill on people not named Mark Millar, so the internal stuff is most likely correct.

"The eye can always tell even if you don't notice" is a common misconception. People notice odd CGI action scenes because they stand out. but huge chunks of cgi are used in films for things as basic as added moisture effects in rain scenes. or recoloring t shirts , or as digital "make up ." I think most post production these days is this sort of "invisible" CGI that most folks wouldn't even recognize as cgi unless you told them .
For example people might notice the giant kryptonite looks a bit odd in Superman Returns but I doubt people could tell Routh's penis bulge was cgi'd to be smaller.

for movie costumes it was more about practicality

there had been a number of adaptations where the superhero wore velour or even just straight up cotton and the lesson was that they went through hero costumes - the detailed expensive ones - very quickly on-set, with constant breaks to perform minor repairs so the received wisdom became that leather or pleather was a good idea

for real-world clothing it's usually about practicality, the heat and flexibility depends on the thickness (leather gloves for example, in colder climates, are very effective because they permit the skin to respire normally but retain heat, without impacting flexibility), some stuff is obviously fashion (including sex stuff/fetish gear) and that never really goes away because there's a constant supply of leather, so a constant opportunity to sell leather goods

I like the bit in Morrison's pitch where he talks about how the X-Men being a group made from the ground up (as opposed to the Avengers who are separate but come together) makes more sense for them to have a uniform appearance instead of everyone doing their own thing as a costume. The leather jacket look is close enough synergy to the movies but injects some much needed pop and personality back into each character.

It's been talked a lot about of writers using indie comics as glorified movie and tv pitches but I haven't heard much about a studio actively influencing an indie comic like that. Closest is how the Cowboys vs Aliens comic was basically made up by a studio ad a way to get the movie made.

Vought is the military-industrial complex using superheroes. Vought is the overall antagonist of the comic and they're NEVER painted in a good light.
                >The military are also supposed to be seen as helpless victims in another part of the book that takes place during the Vietnam War because Vought fricked up their weapons supplement. Vought, the company responsible for all the supes in the book.
Yes, which is exactly the sort of shit the military-industrial complex can frick up and still get paid for. He's not celebrating Vought in any case. He positions them as the almighty soulless corporation dedicated to profiting off war and terror. Ennis valorises the average soldier, which is what he's doing with the whole "army grunts easily kick in the superheroes' shit" climax. He's not venerating the industry behind it, and he very clearly uses Vought as a stand-in for all that's wrong with corporate American profiteering. This is the comic, written at the same time as the Iraq War was happening, where there's a Dubya stand-in who's portrayed as a drooling moron incapable of even forming a simple sentence who's propped up as president by his corporate masters solely so they can get their misjudged, dangerous tech (i.e., the supes) into the military and profit off of war.
I really don't see how you can think Ennis is in any way celebrating Vought/the MIC with The Boys. You have to be wilfully misinterpreting the basic facts of the story to come up with your viewpoint.

The point is that Vought is a part of the military-industrial complex that manages to come up with a way to produce superpowers and then wants to make that a part of the MIC so they can have a monopoly over the US military and hold power over the government.
Vought is explicitly a part of the MIC within the world of The Boys. Ennis clearly makes them the bad guys. Put two and two together and stop claiming Ennis is somehow supporting the military-industrial complex.

                Yes. Exactly.
Vought are explicitly an historic and significant part of the military-industrial complex within the world of the comic.
Ennis is not painting either Vought or their plans as a good thing.
Therefore Ennis is saying that the military-industrial complex is not a good thing.

They've only ever been a nuisance in the US' side and that was what Ennis was trying to convey by portraying his imperfect "heroes" as the intellectual badasses he imagines them to be and the capeshitters he's obsessed with as the morons who ruined everything for the oh so perfect military in the book.

Ennis is a hypocrite and a homosexualed manchild.

Ah okay, I get it now. You're just going off what you half-remember since you're more interested in shitting on Ennis.
There are several issues all about Vought's history as a military-industrial corporation, of which only a brief page or two is about the broken rifles they produce for Vietnam. The whole point is that they've been producing poorly tested weapons and vehicles for decades and profiting off of it. There's two whole issues dedicated to exploring Vought's shenanigans in World War II. They are firmly a part of the MIC in the comic's world. Getting superheroes into the military is their goal because they know they'd have a monopoly on it. They have already had a stable relationship with the military despite their reputation for terribly produced weapons.
The comic explains this fictional history quite clearly. Vought isn't some new up-and-coming company looking to get in the government's books, like you're saying. Ennis isn't supporting Vought. He doesn't like the military-industrial complex.

They try this in multiple different ways, getting their avengers parody to pair up with a battalion leading to an utter failure during WW2, giving faulty weaponry to the troops in Nam leading to them getting massacred, etc.

it is plainly stated they continued selling weaponry to the US military between WW2 and Vietnam.

So they weren't actually in the military industrial complex

Which is supposed to make the viewer sympathize with the baby raping "badass" soldiers and hate the oh so evil corporation

the military-industrial complex describes the relationship between the military and the defense industry that supply it. Vought-American, as a defense corporation supplying the US military, is part of the military-industrial complex. Being generally bad at it doesn't preclude them from being part of it any more than Colt selling the US the M16 in Vietnam.

      No

the military-industrial complex describes the relationship between the military and the defense industry that supply it. Vought-American, as a defense corporation supplying the US military, is part of the military-industrial complex. Being generally bad at it doesn't preclude them from being part of it any more than Colt selling the US the M16 in Vietnam.

      >defense industry
But they aren't a "defense industry" in the traditional sense. They're an entertainment company who have an access to a drug that no one else does. At least that's the way ennis wrote them to be seen. So he is a shitty writer or he just has short-term memory loss. Probably both.

They're a defense contractor in the traditional sense until they frick up in Vietnam and pivot to superheroes to make people forget their frick up, and they're trying to become a defense contractor again. This is all plainly laid out in the comic.

So what? It's not like the military itself hasn't done completely fricked up things themselves. Does Ennis just hate the government? The one that funds the military complexes he dickrides?

I like some of the takes he's given the characters, sure the whole movie loses momentum but it's not as if x-men as a group has too many classic stories. Weapon X which is an entire non-mutant Wolverine solo story was reused because you don't have enough good material from the mainline series.
