Americans worship restaurant workers. If they did end up tipping 100% they'd find a way to justify it. Tell themselves they deserved 300 dollars for 5 minutes of carrying dishes and checking on us which is so vital.

Does this really happen? What if they took a picture of it? What if they tipped themselves 100%?

It depends, some restaurants have mobile devices with card readers that are tied into their POS system (way more efficient to have the server run the card at the table with the same device that they use to take orders), but those handhelds are not the rule.

      >W-WHAT IF THE RESTAURANT RAPES YOU?!
Well, that's why they give you a receipt. Restaurants aren't going to do shit like that and if they have an employee who does it's easy to catch them because the first thing the card company is going to ask for is a copy of the receipt. When the shit doesn't match, the restaurant will get hit for fraud and may be forced to pay out of pocket for the refund. If it happens too much then credit processors will refuse to do business with the merchant.

      It's not worth the risk.

They bring you a receipt and you can check it against your statement at the end of the month. This, and balancing your bankboom is why you keep your receipts.

I’ve seen poors do this before to other people, I’ve even seen poors just flat out take pictures of the cards while they think they aren’t being watched

Even back when it was processed manually with paper all the major charge and credit card companies have free customer service hotlines with dedicated fraud departments. Now-a-days they often include built-in fraud alerts to SMS you about transactions you may wish to dispute.

If you mean adults use debit cards then you are moronic. It is MUCH harder to resolve a fraud dispute with a debit card and in the meantime, the funds have already drawn out of your account. Plus with debit cards you miss getting cash back or rewards points. And a credit card costs literally nothing if you pay the balance each month.

Imagine actually believing this bullshit. That is something credit card companies tell their staff to tell customers, I didn't think the staff actually believed it.

The reason they tell people that is because it makes the company more money. You only need an unbroken payment history of 12 months, how you do it is irrelevant. If you have more than 25% utilisation of your available balances it actually harms your rating.

What you want is a high credit to debt ratio. Brainlet.

this isn't true at all. i've never directly given a credit card company a single cent (only indirectly through merchant fees) and my credit score is over 800. literally never carried a balance in my entire life

                >If you pay off the bill completely it actually harms your credit score because they only want you making the minimum payment necessary.
Absolutely wrong and not the reason card companies want you to pay the minimum balance every month. I pay my balance every month and have pristine credit. The only things that affect your score (with credit cards) are the total balance vs. percentage of available credit, and whether you make your payments on time.

Unless you have low self control, there are only upshots to using a credit card over a debit card. Marginal rewards but more importantly: much better fraud protection.

Gains being lower isn't the same thing as harming your credit score anon.

Ya maybe I misspoke my point, after clarification, still stands.

I think it's fair to describe a reduction in increase as 'harm'. Switching capital from an investment earning 7% to one earning 3% harms your portfolio (ignoring risk, diversification reasons, etc.)

a charge card is bascially a credit card where you cannot carry a balance, you HAVE to pay it in full every month. Other than that it is no different from a credit card except many of them have less rewards and higher fees. In fact there are very few banks that even issue them anymore.

In fancier restaurants they will do whatever you ask. I often ask for the bill right when I order because I don't like waiting afterwards, then the waiter comes with the machine and I pay the bill while eating. Then just get up and leave when finished.

I worked as a waiter for four years in college and I can't imagine anybody trying to get away with this shit, although I'm sure some dumb frick has tried it down the line. Yes, you take the card back to the kiosk and you had to enter the tip in manually, but those all got turned into the manager at the end of the day where he'd balance your receipts and tips. The waiters would wait in a line and you'd stay in his office for five minutes or so while he did his thing so any discrepancies were called out on the spot. I once had a guy tip me $100 on a $32 receipt and the system wouldn't even let me put it in, it required a manager override.

The only thing you could maybe get away with was underreporting cash tips, because if you made less than a certain amount they were required to pay you minimum wage (whereas it was something like $2.15 per hour at the time for waiters). I never did that because it was somewhat of an internal dick waving competition amongst the waiters to see who could score the highest tips and it was almost impossible to make that little unless you royally fricked up every single table. In fact there were a few tables that I know I fricked up anyway if we were really busy, and they usually tipped me 15% anyway. I even spilled a drink on a lady once and they still tipped the standard.

why cant they just take down the info? my card has all the info necessary to make fraudulent purchases on it im pretty sure

        Anonymous

You could I suppose, but you'd have to be insanely dumb to try and this was one of the better gigs you could land for an unskilled worker trying to make it through college. I've had my card skimmed once in an unrelated setting, and one call to Amazon got me the dumb frick's address which I forwarded to the police. It would be very hard to get away with it, and I can't imagine you'd get away with it more than once before someone caught on and shut the card off and began tracking you. The risk/reward just isn't worth it, and the nicer places won't consider hiring you if you're not presentable and incapable of interacting with customers. To a certain extent I would say that those types of places don't attract or hire the sort who would consider something like that in the first place.

        Anonymous

Because getting fired/going to jail for fraud isn't appealing
People would give me their credit cards when I was a radio shack wagie before finishing college, I could have EASILY copied their info down on a notepad pretending like I was just filling out a form
But I didn't because I'm not a high time preference moron who thought maybe getting away with a few hundred in credit card fraud was worth risking going to jail on the verge of escaping the wage cage

There is no estate or inheritance tax in Canada. I live in a white nation, not a israeli golem zoo (america)

Even so, it takes months or even over a year to work through probate depending on where you live. You're setting yourself up for a lot of unnecessary complications in the future, and that's if everything goes right. I've had to go through this shit twice in the last five years, and even "everything goes to anon" in clear black ink turns into a mess of attorneys and paperwork.

Correct it might take a month while the funeral is being done will is processed etc. But I will still be able to live in the property the entire time and will face no real stresses outside of the normal stress that comes along with the death of a parent

Wrong. There is no inheritance or estate tax in canada. Typing a paragraph about how wrong you are, doesn't make you correct. You pay taxes you would for your income that year. That is the closest thing to an estate or inheritance tax. Nothing is taken from actual assets though. Just what they would normally pay in income tax. I don't know why you think you know more than a man who has practiced law for longer than you've been alive. We have talked about how it will happen and what needs to be done

every province has their own variation of this, along with a federal administration tax as well

I delivered pizza back in the day and sometimes customers would flat out refuse to give the card number over the phone. More than one person would tell us just to swipe their card in person. I would have to say, "sir, it's 1995. We also accept cash". We accepted checks too, but those were a bigger pain so I didn't like to offer it as an option.
