Movie should have ended with Maverick dying. That's really all he wanted at the end of the day.

Movie should have ended with Maverick dying. That's really all he wanted at the end of the day. He doesn't want to end up like fricking Iceman.

It seemed like they played with the idea but didn't want to commit to it. Maybe they thought it'd be weird to write a story about a protagonist wanting to die when the original director already killed himself. Would have been kino if after they're big celebration they show Maverick trying to adjust to normal life but be can't hack it. Takes a jet out for a spin and rams it into a mountain at mach 10 speed.

I disagree. The whole idea of the movie is about obsolescence and age. Tom is a relic in the movie and as an actor, a remnant of a dying era. Drones are replacing pilots, it’s inevitable. But he says “not today”, and tells reality and fate to go frick itself. By all narrative principles he SHOULD have died, gone out in a blaze of glory to see in the next generation. But he doesn’t. He keeps going because he doesn’t care about the limits you impose on him. That’s what makes the movie truly in the spirit of 80s action, that larger than life heroic denial of the facts because the facts don’t satisfy us. That’s why this is extremely popular and movies like TLJ and James Bond were forgettable shit. WE KNOW people have to die, the good times have to end and we arent invincible and immortal. But maverick isn’t real, he can tell reality to go frick itself and for a moment make us feel a little better about it, and while we are sat in the theatre maybe believe a little bit in the wish fulfilling soulful hyperreality we see on screen. It’s hitting the same subconscious grooves heroic epics, medieval knight tales and all the other timeless stories do. It’s just the human spirit crafting it’s own based little reality without tempering itself or being dragged down by self awareness. That’s tom cruise, that’s top gun.

Movie should've ended with Tom Cruise dying on set. Every "Mission Impossible" that was made I kept hoping for a fatal accident. No luck yet...

Oh Cinemaphile how low you've fallen. Once you took the first brave stance against Scientology, now you're shilling a Tom Cruise flick and collectively sucking his dick. Your forefathers are pointing at you in disgust

Those two have nothing to do with one another and you're talking bullshit. Gamergate was a mistake because it was a bunch of seething incels crying about "muh wemen in vidya". Chanology was about freedom of information and tackling an absolute heinous entity

Ironic, Because it's kind of pathetic how much people who keep calling things "Reddit" on Cinemaphile do it. You wanna belong so much so you have to keep calling people by THE R WORD to show they don't belong and you do.
