They made Krypton into an evil empire and Kara is now more or a less a carbon copy of Anissa. Yes, I know this isn’t the first time Krypton was changed into a militaristic empire, but it’s still hackneyed. Zod should be the exception not the rule.

Moreover, OP called MAWS an ‘interesting take’ on the Superman mythos and quite frankly there’s nothing interesting about copying the evil empire plot point from DBZ, Invincible and previous runs of Superman. And that’s not even getting into how lame and uninspired they’ve made most the villains in this show.

      >Ishmel (Jimmy Olsen's VA) favourite movie is Tim Burton's Batman, TV Show: Arrow, Cartoons: JLU, YJ, TT, static and BTAS while Jake is excited for James Gunn DCU

      >They'd love to do a Mongol arc

      >Ishmel's favourite anime is a tie between Yu Yu Hakusho and Lupin the 3rd

      >They wanted Krypton to be complex. Many versions of Krypton are cautionary tales--a world of complacent decadents, fiddling while Rome burns, or a world of heedless know-it alls who disregard Jor-El--but we wanted a Krypton that was, by turns, aspirational and horrifying. The militaristic empire of Brainiac *and* the technological utopia of Jor-El. A kingdom divided, that ultimately fell.

      >The back half of S2 is Jake's favorite arc.

Of course conquering planets means killing people. She knows that. She calls herself a warrior and doesn't ever seem to hesitate from fighting, killing, or using her laser vision. What she clearly has a problem with is genociding entire races and leaving whole planets as barren husks of stone floating coldly through space. Her vision of a peaceful future is welcoming planets into the New Kryptonian Empire, by force if necessary, and having everyone prosper. No soldier goes into war thinking they won't have to kill, but they'd never expect to be wholly and solely responsible for every single person in that given country turning to ash.

                It's inconsistent and nonsensical.
                >I'm okay with killing because I'm a warrior and conqueror
                >WHAT DO YOU MEAN I KILLED PEOPLE AND SET WORLDS AFLAME?!
It was a spineless cop-out to let the show try to have its Vegeta and still speed-run his redemption arc by making Kara brainwashed and attempting to alleviate her of all responsibility for her actions, but even worse than that it's contradictory because if Kara really has no problems FORCING people to join the empire, she should not be unfamiliar with the concept of what should/will happen if a planet refuses to capitulate.

If Kara has no issues killing, then the sudden reveal she's been killing en masse should not have been such a painful revelation nor one that needed to be repressed. The only logical conclusion to draw from this scene is that Kara does not have any memory of killing people, her entire concept of 'warriors'/'conquering' is in name only with a much more innocent outlook on both due to Brainiac's upbringing and brainwashing, but even that isn't even a fulfilling background because now the show is just trying to have its fem-Saiyan without any of the gray morality that makes bloodthirsty fight-monkeys interesting in the first place and instead making excuses for her with mind control so she doesn't need to feel responsible for mass murder.

To put it another way - Nolan is also an interesting take on 'Evil Superman' specifically because he ISN'T brainwashed, no Viltrumite is. They genuinely believe that no matter how many people they kill, in the long run (and for Viltrumites in particular that's a VERY long run) these civilizations will be better for it. There is no out here, they know its brutal but still think it's for the best.

Kara is like the writers looked at Nolan, liked what they saw, but couldn't commit to the war crimes because that'd ruin any attempt at having cutesy slice of life stuff on the side with her going forward so they just write off the worst of it with 'oh Braianc MADE her do it she wasn't conscious'

NTA but that's a massive stretch to interpret the scene that way. She saw the planet in complete ruins, and then saw a mural depicting her as the cause of it. A massive leap from simply killing other warriors at all.

Does Kara think no civilians die in war? Does she think every planet 'conquered' just surrenders peacefully? That there is no destruction of property or loss of life in any way?

This is what gets me on this version of Kara is it's leaning so hard into her being a staple of the old, warmongering Krypton this version uses but it has no balls in committing her to the role. Kara uses terms like warrior/conquering very openly that you think she is proud of it but the first time the horrors of war are actually featured she caves and the show has to water down her campaigns as being mind-controlled the entire time.

Do you think this makes every soldier a bloodthirsty genocider who revels in the blood of their massacred victims? There's a reason why shit like Dresden and Meetinghouse are debated to this day, because they were indiscriminate destruction against civilians instead of targeted attacks on military targets. Whether you think it's fart-huffing on their part or not, actual soldiers still believe in a code of conduct and rules for war in order to achieve military goals with a minimized loss of civilian life.

Do you think everybody who enlists and goes to war to fight for their country would be A-OK with finding out that while they were sleeping, they killed every man, woman, and child in a city? Kara is a soldier fighting for her empire and just found out that while she was sleeping, she killed uncountable amounts of people on multiple worlds. Did you read a fricking word in that post or not? Yes, she's ok with killing people. No, she's not ok with killing entire races and leaving entirely planets as lifeless rocks. Those are not the same thing. Are you high or stupid?

Vegeta enjoyed killing because he believed that he was strong and it was his right to do so. He didn't value life at all. Kara does value life, and that's why she wants people to join the empire. She wants a thriving, prosperous universe joined under Krypton. Killing a few soldiers was a means to an end. Killing EVERYONE on multiple worlds is obviously different. You don't have an argument here.

Kara isn't accurately depicted as anything resembling a real life soldier. She's an autistic le proud alien warrior whose even casual social interactions are scored by militaristic tones. And yet the very first time Kara is shown to have participated in any kind of situation depicting actual war, it sends her into an existential crisis. There is no internal consistency to the character - even before the climax of the episode, just visiting a single city on Thanagar, Kara is shocked to see it in ruins. And again I have to ask what she thought 'conquering' even means. The episode doesn't address that Kara has killed people even in general (if she did Clark would have absolutely wanted nothing to do with her even in the beginning) and everything about her warrior facade comes off as hollow. The show wants to have its Kara be a soldier but doesn't want the baggage that comes with being a soldier, evidenced by Brainiac's brainwashing and the only soldiery things she's done being so egregiously over the top so it can force a 'horrors of war' theme without accurately depicting the moral quandaries of being a conqueror.

The claims of "genocide" or the entire planet being empty husks are the leaps in logic being made in these arguments. In every instance we see one city on three planets. Saying she's okay with killing people is a reach when literally the only time the show has ever shown her killing people causes her to break down. The show clearly is trying to keep this Kara as innocent as they possible can so they can use her without the hang-ups of trying to woobify a mass-murderer but just result in a wishy-washy attempt at having a complicated character who doesn't need to feel any guilt towards anything because brainwashing.

The creators apparently even said they want this Kara as their 'Vegeta' (

Brainiac says they were genocided completely and utterly to the point where the combat data scans used by the bots that Superman fights is all that was left of them. It's not just one city, it's the entire planet.

He doesn't explicitly say the races are wiped out in their entirety.

                >Consciousness preserved in a holographic form.
                >These scans are all that’s left of those who did not comply with the original Kryptonian Empire.
He's referring to those people as individuals, warriors/champions who fell protecting their civilizations

                >what does she think conquering mean?
What do YOU think conquering means? Are you for some reason under the impression that a conquerer leaves a civilization in ruins and with everybody slain mindlessly? Rome conquered plenty of civilizations and welcomed them into rmthe empire ro prosper as new Roman citizens. Very rarely I'm history as a conquering power said "nah, frick all of you" and just killed everyone, burned everything ro the ground, and fricked off. Even at worst, the population could serve as slaves and the land used for resources. Again, you're not making any argument that makes sense. You either didn't watch the show or don't have even a loose grasp on human emotion and interactions. Or maybe both.

Conquering certainly doesn't mean leaving everything neat and clean, either. Look at ANY military campaign led by a first world country in the last thirty years. Thanagar on first view in the episode genuinely just looks like a city where a significant battle has taken place recently, that it shakes Kara to her core as it does really makes the suggestion she's a hardened warrior dubious and sets her morality pretty black/white
                >you're not making any argument that makes sense
Then I will say this as simply as I can
MAWS Kara isn't a complicated or interesting character because despite setting her up as a soldier who sees conquering/warfare as a good thing, the only time she is ever shown being a soldier it's because she's brainwashed and her only shown reaction to war in the show is abject horror.

                >what does she think conquering mean?

I was going to make an autistic joke about you, but then you made this post. Now I actually think you're autistic because you clearly lack the ability to read subtext and take context clues. If you want every single detail about everything in a story spoonfed to you because you cant handle having to think about anything, then go read wattpad fanfiction.

                >The claims of "genocide" or the entire planet being empty husks are the leaps in logic being made in these arguments. In every instance we see one city on three planets.
If it wasn't a complete genocide then it would've been far more effective for the narrative to show a handful of huddling survivors living in fear, tearfully running from her in panic as the bringer of death has returned, with a couple of suicidal people throwing things at her while yelling about how she destroyed their society.
It's a complete genocide because it's also meant to show how Brainiac does not give a flying frick about organic life. Collect the brain scans, genocide the miscreants when done.

That would've been a far better way to establish things, as well as parallel what Clark's been going through on Earth.
They really dropped the ball there.

Darkseid should be voiced by Micheal Ironside when he does finally appear. He shouldn't become the main antagonist until the last season though.

Yeah, they're obviously alluding to the Justice League getting together at a much later date. I would genuinely enjoy if they end the series with Superman and Pals vs Darkseid. Best case scenario, they find a way to do Justice League without having them take over the show like The Batman.
