Someone really hates Guillermo del Toro

from the little I've heard it's more that everyone hates Mignola so he has to go solo about this shit. on the 2019 reboot one of the artists on the comics the movie draws from was telling people on twitter not to bother him about it, as he had nothing to do with it
        >it seems writer John Arcudi and artist Guy Davis are being screwed out of royalties regarding characters they co-created for the BPRD series. This goes back to the supposed falling out they had with Mignola and/or Dark Horse

          Sad!
Guy Davis is a great comic book artist and monster designer.

It's ironic that lot of the dudes who left Marvel and DC to pursue creator-owned properties wound up having beef with other artists about who owned characters in the new series. Turns out it's not always as clear cut as you would think.

But the bottom line is if you want bulletproof rights to the thing do it first in your own title and not as a spinoff of someone else's work. The BPRD only exists because of Mignola. Arcudi and Davis might have expanded on it but it wasn't their idea to begin with and detangling who is responsible for which part of the whole is just a neverending legal quagmire. They worked for hire on someone else's property and everyone in the fricking industry knew goddamn well by then if you're working for hire you don't own shit. If you don't like it don't sign the contract and go work on your own book

It's kinda shocking how bad the NuBoot is, it comes off as a parody but I don't think that was the intent. Was there any fricking reason to reboot it? it's not like it's some well known IP like Batman or something, why not just make another sequel.

The reboot has Mila Jovovich tho

I love Milla Jovovich enough that I enjoyed five Resident Evil movies but no
It is hilarious that the movie's best scene happens because she goes "be my evil husband plz, let's kill all the humans" and because Hellboy hesitates thinking about it for like two minutes she's able to kill thousands of people in London

      Milla stands by it

Have you seen that 'true story' alien movie that is NOT a true story?

      Anonymous

Several reasons. Mignola and GDT didn't see eye to eye. Mignola is similar to Gaiman in that he'll torpedo his own adaptations if it isn't precisely his vision, which obviously clashes with a director like GDT who has a distinct style and vibe he goes for. Shame, too, because the slice of life scenes from Hellboy and Hellboy 2 were great. Really got the heart of the comics.
Perlman is also getting old, and the girl who played Liz has really bad MS. I think she's hardly even active as an actress anymore unfortunately. They should have kept making animated movies while they could (maybe they still could)--those were great.
As for the crooked man flick, it looks to be pretty good so far. The story is entirely self-contained, and it's a prequel to all of the arcs that were "adapted" by the three movies. You can start totally fresh, and even cut decades into the future for more movies if you want. Hellboy is really episodic. There are a few big arcs in the comics and a lot of plot points that weave through, but more than half of the total run length (in issues) I'd call one shots or spinoffs. If they can strike a balance of humor, creepiness, and just plain weird, it's not that hard to do Hellboy well. They just have to remember that "humor" is a self-deprecating demon who goes "aww crap" and has goofy comments, not an angry frick screaming "FRICK U DAD U NEVER LOVED ME" and acting like he's in a Whedon movie.

Did Guillermo have plans for Hellboy 3?

      Anonymous

      Yes
      >Del Toro (in a Shock Til You Drop interview) stated that Legendary Pictures head Thomas Tull said he’d love to see Hellboy 3 – not exactly saying he’d do it – but Del Toro was hopeful they could have that talk eventually.
      >At one point, since Del Toro was busy with Crimson Peak, he proposed making Hellboy 3 a comic book, an idea which Mignola shut down to avoid confusion with his comic run.
      >And then the real issue came afloat: financing. In a Reddit AMA, Del Toro said the “very interesting ending to the series” was unlikely to happen. Since the first two films barely broke even, no studio was eager to produce Hellboy 3. He added that home video sales helped the numbers of both films but now – in the streaming era – that revenue wasn’t guaranteed anymore.
      >At Comic-Con 2014, Del Toro mentioned a semi-deal with Legendary in which, if Pacific Rim 2 was successful, they’d fund Hellboy 3. Ultimately, Del Toro ceded the director’s chair to Steven S. DeKnight and the deal fell through.

I find Del Taco's Hellboy to be unbearably boring. I have no idea why, it's an average paced capeshit flick, it seems to do everything right, but I just get bored to death by it. Maybe because it's way too generic. Del Taco is meant to be all style, but the first Hellboy movie doesn't have much of it aside from the designs, and those themselves cannot carry. Never seen Golden Army. And the new Hellboy was just incompetent shite.
