Say you're a casting director. You have 6 main characters to cast. That's the core of your show, not counting all the secondary and tertiary characters.
By your understanding of demographics, you should fill all the character slots up with white people. They make up the 80% of the population.(the numbers are for example purposes only) So by your understanding, there should be 8 white characters to every 10. And because there's only 6 slots, then all of them should go to white people, because there's not enough room to fit the other races.
That kind of thinking is what causes minorities to be passed over. Because for 99% of shows, the main cast will always be 6 or fewer characters. Thus, minorities will never fit. Thus, they never get leading roles.
That's why you can't count only percentages. In order to give minorities a chance, you need to disregard who the majority is, and reserve space for the minority. In doing so, you end up having to give up half of your slots or more to them. But they get a chance to work.

Depending on the story you're trying to tell, having a diverse cast can make it more realistic. And can also create positive role models that others can connect with , depending on race.

Say that 33% of the talent pool is actually good. 33% is mediocre. And 33% is bad. So taking a 13% minority, and only counting 33% of them, you're still left with 4% talent. That 4% minority, can act better than the 54% of mediocre+bad majority.
If you really only hired based on merit, then you should have zero mediocre white talent. And you should have all top quality black talent. But you don't see that in reality. In reality, you have a lot of mediocre white actors. They could just as well be played by talented black actors. And if white actors really were so a-plenty, then you would never see mediocre white actors.

There is talented black actors. If a casting director is good, then they'll find them. But unfortunately we have a bunch of woke morons in such positions, so they hire just anybody without discrimination.

I find that highly unlikely. I mean, it's kind of true in the sense, that if you counted 1 black actor per role, then you *might* run out of talent eventually. Though there are literally hundreds of thousands of black actors. The chances that you couldn't find say a thousand talented black actors, is highly unlikely. As we see with white actors, a lot of the time, the most talented don't get the role. There is a lot more factors involved. Like if you fit the character's visual profile. How likeable you are to the producers. How marketable you are. Do you test well with audiences. Do you have any connections.(This is a huge one) After including all of these deciding factor, talent becomes diluted. It just ends up being some executive producer's friend's nephew, that is amenable enough to work with.
Similar thing happens to black talent. Why did Shaq play Kazaam, and not someone else who can actually act? Well, Shaq is infinitely more marketable. Why did LeBron Star in Space Jam 2 instead of someone who can actually act? Well, Lebron is infinitely more marketable. Those are glaring examples of talent getting overlooked. But it happens on a smaller level. Do you think Casting directors are really hiring the best they can find from black talent? Most of those people can't even read black faces, because they don't have enough experience with black people to do so. They don't know if someone is talented or not. They don't know if a black person is pretty or not. And as for prettiness, they really don't care about that, because they put diversity so high on the pedestal, that it overrides anything to do with attractiveness.
They make all of these mistakes. And then you sit here and tell me that there's not enough black talent? Pshaw.
