          Miyazaki was/is an actual communist.
He drew manga for communist publications. Studied leftist political theory in college. Was a strong union man and representative. Etc.
Maybe in his old age, his feelings have dwindled or were broken with time, but during his heyday, he was absolutely a marxist.

And I'm sure Miyazaki is aware that the westernization of Japan began in the 1800's, not after WWII.

You'd be surprised at how much of a stranglehold the South Korean government has on their media exports. Japanese anime organically became popular around the world and then the government decided they needed to keep tabs on it / exploit it. South Korea funneled fuck tons of money into kpop and kdrama exports from the get go. It's no coincidence that kpop shit suddenly blew up globally in the past 5 years

Take a look at anime in the 90s like Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell and Berserk and they still have huge cultural influence even in the west among anime fans. No one even cares about Squid Game anymore and that came out in 2020. Korean culture will be a flash in the pan. No one will care about it in five-ten years tops.

Japan welcomed western culture with open arms. They thought there were hot shit for thousands of years before they realized all too late that they were just large fish in the backwater that is East Asia.
After Commodore Matthew Perry cleaved their assholes open, they desperately began to cling to European and American art, culture and military to elevate themselves. Even during WWII they had to bow to Germany. Japan has accomplished almost nothing on its own for hundreds of years. Everything has been done through the emulation and guidance of western powers.

Because your immediate assumption of me for not liking an amateurish story by an overrated old jap boomer is to assume that I only like quipshit or capeshit and use that as some metric to compare with Miyazaki’s overrated garbage.
The fact that you immediately thought of that shows you lack experience and breadth with media.

Here is a hint; did you know there exists other forms of media and writing that aren’t just A) Boring Miyazaki shit and B) quippy Whedon shit ?

No actually I assumed you grew up or are otherwise familiar with 80s films, particularly Schwarzenegger, and I don't think one liners in principle are bad at all (Let off some steam, Bennett). In particular I reference those films because each character was filled with well character, and the main players in Princess Mononoke can be seen as rather monotonous in comparison, indeed Jigo and San sort of lack any personality whatsoever.

But I don't think they're boring in it of themselves, just maybe not as entertaining as other characters in other films, or books in this case.

        See:

That jives with what Oshii said in his memoir.
        >Founder of Studio Ghibli and director of many of Japan’s best known animated films, including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Miyazaki’s protagonists are usually young girls. Miyazaki reportedly once shouted “What’s wrong with falling in love with a 12-year-old girl? “(「一二歳の女の子と恋愛してどこが悪い」) at fellow director Mamoru Oshii when drunk.
        >Those girls are innocent plants for Miya-san. His mind is like a little girl who is standing beyond the mirror. I still don’t get it though. I guess it’s barely different from mine. I have no idea, because I have never been interested in an actual little girl, or child. But he has. When he got terribly drunk, he suddenly shouted “What’s wrong with falling in love with a 12-year-old girl?” That was obviously his true colours.

        >Nausicaä’s breasts are quite large, don’t you think? That’s not only so she’ll be able to breast feed her children, or for sleeping with the guy she likes. They’re when she embraces the old man and old ladies in the castle when they are dying. I think her bosom is something like that. That’s why it had to become big. When she held them to her chest, they could die peacefully. I thought her bosom needed to be as such.

lol remember how how Studio Ghibli planned to bring in a new generation of directors to be the future of the studio so the old guard could gracefully age out, except Miyazaki pulled rank and forced out one of their hopeful successors so he could take over his movie personally?

And the dude he forced out now has like four of the top ten most successful animated movies of all time while Ghibli is running on the fumes of Miyazaki and his son because the other notable directors from their peak are dead

I thought her bosom needed to be as such.

the movie was bad though, animations were ok I think, but the story was really silly, a complete mess. Nothing even close to his father's greatness. What was he supposed to say, maybe sugar coat it, but it really was bad.

Totoro does a good job of capturing the feel of early childhood from multiple perspectives.
Miyazaki's more plot driven films are far worse. He's good at painting a scene and putting you in it.

If you're a dumb plotfag yeah.
Though the films where Miyazaki tries to write a boring traditional plot are his worse so I partially agree with you. I just think you're wrong for not enjoying his departures from formulaic 3/5 act writing.

          >Your girlfriend is right and you're wrong.
          I disagree
          >Totoro does a good job of capturing the feel of early childhood from multiple perspectives.
Care to elaborate on this? I didn’t feel anything that resembles what you’re saying while watching it. It felt more like a children’s adventure than a film trying to capture a sense of nostalgia for adults

The sibling's have separate points of view throughout the film. How much "magic" they see is relative to their age, with the older sibling being dismissive of the younger at times. The Father's point of view is almost entirely mundane but you can see his indulgence is one of nostalgia. He remembers what it was like to be child, even as he's too distracted by his job or his wife's absence.
That's what Totoro is about. Putting you back into the subjective view of the children.

That’s an interesting take, but I don’t think it fleshes it out enough or makes it interesting enough for me as an adult to find entertaining. It’s nice that a children’s movie has some substance but I don’t believe there’s enough there to consider it anything more than a children’s movie

That's why I led off with your girlfriend is right and you're wrong. Your girlfriend instinctively gets the film is about painting those feelings, that it doesn't need anything else. It's why women gravitate toward Ghibli.
I don't mean that in a trolling way.
Oshii's book about Ghibli, the one this is from

That jives with what Oshii said in his memoir.

, has a chapters long screed about how Miyazaki is a terrible director because he doesn't have enough plot to go with his themes. But I just picture Oshii's films where he has 5 minute long montages set to expository diatribes no actual human being on earth would ever utter under any circumstances and I think Miyazaki has the better measure of what a human is like between the two extremes.

It doesnt make a difference what kind of plot structure he uses, retard.
His basic storytelling is still trash.
