The original tv show is better than EoE.
Both humans and angels came from seeds sent by an alien race to populate the Earth. Only one seed was meant to land on each planet, but Earth got screwed up because two seeds wound up there. The one seed suppressed the other and humans descended from it. Eventually humans discovered the other seed and accidentally released the angels who want to destroy humanity and take their place on Earth. The group Seele wants to trigger the Human Instrumentality Project, which essentially means all humans will combine into a single consciousness and ascend into godhood. The main character Shinji has a hard time getting close to people because his mom died when he was young and his father is a huge neglectful butthole who's obsessed with using Seele's plan to reunite with his dead wife. Eventually they defeat all the angels and Seele tries to complete their plans, and Shinji is given the choice to either accept Human Instrumentality or accept the pain and difficulty of trying to connect with other people in a state of individuality. The end of the series represents this choice as it takes place inside Shinji's head and the movie shows the actual events that lead up to that choice.
None of this stuff matters and it's just the backdrop for Shinji learning that life, even though it's difficult, is better than literally nothing.

What I don't get is why the big disagreement between SEELE and Gendo. How are their plans different really? It seems like he gets to be with his wife regardless.
Gendo was trying to place himself in a position where he could control the outcome of Hunan Instrumentality. I don't think he wanted everyone's consciousness to be merged, I think he just wanted to get his wife back. Rei chose Shinji to make the choice instead however.
Rei is created from the remains of Shinji's mother and contains the soul of Lilith whole Kaworu is an angel who chose to take the shape of a human which means he contains the soul of Adam. The lances have the power to disrupt an AT field. Leaving them in Adam and Lilith caused them to be dormant. It did the same thing to Eva Unit-01 allowing SEELE's Evas to form the Tree of Life which triggered the Third Impact, which is the event which would allow SEELE's goals to be realized.
That actually makes sense, I'm impressed.

I watched that recently, i've been trying to watch a lot of anime (modern garbage) over the last few years. Gunbuster was so much better than all the modern stuff combined it wasn't funny. It wasn't brilliant.... but it was perfectly watchable and such a massive breath of fresh air it was kinda crazy. And it was really cute seeing Anno's ideas and editing techniques from evangelion in their infancy in Gunbuster.
TLDR: Fricking jesus christ, modern anime is bad.

There's some that are just as good but completely different in terms of tone and themes. Mushishi, Ping Pong, Kids on the Slope... not many but there's a few.

You can't just make a lot of bad things happen to the main character in an incredibly short time and expect me to care after establishing nothing but the most basic things about him. There's zero emotional resonance. The mom's a non character and the dude's unsympathetic. The whole anime is so tonedeaf it's laughable. All the characters are the same anime archetypes I've seen a million times. Not a single plot point comes as much of a surprise.

I'll say this. One of the few anime series(emphasis on series because anime films have had good auteurs working in them) that actually lived up to the hype. For years, I've been putting off watching this because the discourse around it was so polarising and I mostly bought into the narrative that was just weebs overhyping some teenage romance shlock. It didn't help that other overhyped shit I tried out were in fact shit(Attack on Titan and FMA brotherhood). But I stand corrected. This was great and I am glad I watched it. I also enjoyed FMA 2003 although to a lesser extent than this.

I honestly don't get why people like edgerunners so much. Yes, it is rather well animated, the soundtrack is nice and there are some pretty good scene when the characters go full cyberpdycho. Other than that, it was rather meh. The characters weren't that interesting, the ending could have been better if they didn't bring in Adam Smasher (who you KNOW survives). It's decent enough in the end but eh.
