After crunching the numbers, they came to the conclusion that 99~% of all layperson CPR use cases were for cardiac problems rather than asphyxiative ones, and in the former case artificial respiration is largely a waste of time. They just omit the breathing bit from normalgay casual training these days because the likelihood of using it for a heart attack or something is shitload higher than for someone drowning or suffocating on a ham sandwich, and it keeps things simple.
Asphyxiation is treated with the Heimlich maneuver, including obstructed airways from drowning, not CPR. If a drowning victim's airways are clear then the guideline is 2-5 rescue breaths then chest compressions if they're not breathing on their own.
Every second of chest compressions count, and pausing chest compressions to bring in new oxygen to the body is simply not as crucial as keeping your heart pumping and the blood circulating the oxygen you do have. Especially because chest compressions will not perform their function correctly from the first compression you do, it takes time, and because most laypeople who are not highly trained do not have sufficient experience to get the compressions going quickly. So if you keep pausing to breathe, the person is getting very little if any help with their heart and bloodflow. Helping with breathing is better if there's a second person there who can keep the chest compressions going while you handle performing rescue breaths. Or if you're more highly trained and/or have been instructed differently.
It's optional.
Compressing the lungs is more important.

It's kinda funny at how badly money is spent at schools in America, even when it is spent on improving academics. None of it is in service to actually producing a smarter individual. Standardized testing is hands down the best way to elevate people out of poverty but the school unions are trying to push it out because guess what, they're too fricking lazy to execute and spend on the programs that would help students be better students. The fricking Chinese and Europeans produce children that speak multiple languages at a conversational level, are doing pre-calculus at grade 8, and by grade 12 are either on their way into a trade apprenticeship or have a few college-level courses, when American kids likely won't ever do calculus. The mobile/tablet generation of American kids are walking into college to study computer science and the professors there (who are like 30 years old) are seeing that those kids are struggling to figure out how to navigate file structures PCs and type. Kids in high school in America will most likely "dress up" for only two achievements in their life: high school graduation and when they get married.

I'd have around 10 movie days for all classes. Half of those might have been historical or scientifically relevant to the class but in my view a lot of those films did very little to teach.
There are some films like Lincoln or Contagion that I think can exceptionally accommodate a lesson, but the reality is a lot of the films we did watch were just action films like Gladiator or Saving Private Ryan that did almost nothing to teach anything. Like, if by watching Gladiator kids were instructed to read Marcus Aurelius's Meditations or were taught that work then that would be fantastic, but that wasn't why we watched Gladiator - we didn't learn shit from watching Gladiator.
The documentaries we did watch were good to be sure. But the movies about historical events, kinda bad.

Usually movie day was after major exams that finish up by lunch so instead of sending the kids home for a partial day, you get to watch a short movie and when you get home, you have no excuse to not do homework or do other projects.

Honestly the most depressing part is the players. It's all kickbacks down here.

Outside of a few small businesses, and even fewer large corporations, there's no jobs in rural areas. I mean NOTHING. Nor is there any money to create jobs, as all that went to chingalongland in the 70s and 80s. Footbaw games have become fair days for the poor. It's when uncle Bill sells Confederate flags, Cindy fires up the corn dog stand, and (in the case of the Superbowl), sex trafficing happens. The poorest of the poor make peanuts on game day, and those peanuts might have to last all year.

A proper God-fearing business owner should already be donating to charities and running social programs and giving back to his community. I really appreciate the explanation of how charity relates to distrust of the government. I can see why so much charity goes to waste because the motivation to contribute is higher than in most places but the heightened motivation is not enough to avoid grifters who run non-profits to line their own pockets while delivering a minimal amount to those who need it. I met a couple who were pastors who had "fled" Texas and because I was a filthy heathen who had barely gone to church they couldn't explain to me very well what made them pack up their family and move as far north of Texas as humanly possible but with what you said and what has happened recently with the Southern Baptists a lot of stuff is making a lot more sense. There's a mixture of corruption and predatory nonsense that is common anywhere but it's so bad that not even the basics of society's infrastructure is being maintained.
I cannot see how this can change because the most motivated and truly good people are old and everyone young looking to take the reigns of power are being brought up by the shitty old and corrupt people. People are running on such thin margins and wrung out they have no time to pay enough attention to do what needs to get fixed. The corruption is too fricking thick to penetrate and it owns all the avenues for messaging to these people.
I've lived in some poor places propped up by natural resource extraction and I saw the beginnings of poor, just before all the jobs started disappearing as the industries collapsed. Despite being poor I was getting out, I had the hope of getting out. But the people there were stuck, stuck because at best the only asset they had was something they were expecting to inherit and it was a shack they couldn't even sell when they got it. No hospital and for the longest time no Internet.

We were okay for awhile with coal, but when the EPA chased that away other attempts at industry were similarly strangled. Lumber was a proposal but it alot of money on hand to deal with bureaucracy. I actually think a huge part of the problem is how difficult / expensive it is to actually start a new business. These days you cant just save up anymore, you have to take a loan which is always a shitty deal.
and yes I mean it was chased away by the EPA, they viewed every minor infraction as a major one to the point not having toilet paper in a stall was written up as a major violation and thus fine.
Oh and the drugs. the drugs are really fricking us over. Should kill dealers who cross state lines to bring it in.

Family is from the mining town of Holden. papaw worked in the mines 40 years first as a worker, then a supervisor.
Believe me, I know how rough the companies could be.
However, its always worth noting why they were like that. They only got the easy coal as you put it, because industry had largely moved overseas at this point. They were also harried by the activist EPA every change they got.
Im not fully excusing all their behavior, lord knows every family here has some story of someone they know being screwed over, but one should always look into all sides of a story.

In all fairness, the US government's only real original intent was to be the governing body of a union of 13 separate smaller nations so they could all share a few basic universal laws. To put it in an Episcopalian sense; the president was the bishop, but you did what your actual pastor asked of your home congregation more often than not.
It was only when these smaller countries decided to take on the role of being smaller aspects of a singular country that it started to take on a wider role, as it now had wider responsibilities. The US is a Republic and originally no women, blacks, non-whites, or whites who didn't own enough land were allowed to vote. It's also a representative form of democracy which does not guarantee that elected officials will listen at all to the people who elect them. Not only this, it's first past the post system which is deliberately intended to severely limit the choices of voters.
A real democratic system can never exist without further advances in technology but the US system was never meant to be even close to a democratic state. It has always existed in absolute fear that the people would limit naked capitalism in some way the founding fathers built America to be. They didn't understand it completely but they wanted great landlords and entrepreneurs to run the government -- seeing personal wealth as equating to intelligence and sanity. This was before Adam Smith postulated how wealth actually works and a further century before Marx tore it apart and created a divide between classes that were not supposed to exist in 'the land of the free'.
The US is and always has been a LIBERAL democratic republic. It uses LIMITED (extremely limited and engineered) voting systems to manufacture consent between the exploited or discriminated classes with no hope for life much less a chance to succeed and a gratuitously corrupt and gluttonous eternal elite who generally inherit wealth and buy their grades at University. Even the nasty aims of the founding fathers where slavery is begrudgingly accepted for the greater good would lose all sense of pride realizing they created a nation that exist solely for lazy, stupid, heartless, and patently insane direct descendants.
Welfare can only exist under democracy. The fact that we don't have any welfare anymore is because we have always existed under a fake democracy.

we really doing this? Welfare is a system invented by western democratic states. It's not alms or charity which has and will always exist, and it's not dole or 'bread and circuses' issued by monarchies or empires. Welfare is a RIGHT granted by a government for people who qualify under the restrictions (blacks, for example, were exempt from the New Deal). A bread dole /alms/ or work conscription with some compensation is not welfare. Welfare is a social safety net for free citizens. Peasants that needed help or they would starve and could no longer be exploited by lords given barely enough to live during a famine isn't anything like 'welfare'.

That is backwards thinking. People without the means to care for themselves are dependent on welfare because caring for those people is the purpose of welfare. In the end a strong welfare system benefits everyone. Housing programs demonstrably lower crime, public health options lead directly to lower costs both through negotiation and through an increase in preventative care, all of the money going to these things circulates through the individual communities of the beneficiaries, etc.

I don't understand what you all see in this comic. The art isn't anything to write home about, the dialogue is terrible and it's the same generic "tomboy in love with submissive male" premise that 30 different anime have going right now.
I feel like decades of really shit sitcoms from both the West and anime has really fricking cultivated low standards of situational comedy in the minds of people. So much so that when something with good charming writing comes along, like this comic, the visual similarities to the mountains of dogshit out there just makes it difficult for people to appreciate what the writing is doing. It could be dysfunctional family, school, fantasy, medicine, cartoon-whatever, all the tropey settings that have been so fricking terrible for so long that when some guy actually applies real charm to any of them they just get pitched aside as something people say they've seen before.
I think another problem is the way sex is depicted in comedy. In Japan sexiness often wreathed in positivity but unfortunately with a sense of perversion. In the West sex is valued but unfortunately something to be ashamed of or used like toilet humour. And neither of these things are healthy or relatable. In contrast there's the French who often depict sex as fun and natural with very little emphasis on any of the above negative traits. So in this comic here the "bawd" characters own their sexuality in a way that is healthy and adorable in a way that the West and Japan just really don't do.

Every second of chest compressions count, and pausing chest compressions to bring in new oxygen to the body is simply not as crucial as keeping your heart pumping and the blood circulating the oxygen you do have. Especially because chest compressions will not perform their function correctly from the first compression you do, it takes time, and because most laypeople who are not highly trained do not have sufficient experience to get the compressions going quickly. So if you keep pausing to breathe, the person is getting very little if any help with their heart and bloodflow. Helping with breathing is better if there's a second person there who can keep the chest compressions going while you handle performing rescue breaths. Or if you're more highly trained and/or have been instructed differently.

The fricking Chinese and Europeans produce children that speak multiple languages at a conversational level, are doing pre-calculus at grade 8, and by grade 12 are either on their way into a trade apprenticeship or have a few college-level courses, when American kids likely won't ever do calculus. The mobile/tablet generation of American kids are walking into college to study computer science and the professors there (who are like 30 years old) are seeing that those kids are struggling to figure out how to navigate file structures PCs and type. Kids in high school in America will most likely "dress up" for only two achievements in their life: high school graduation and when they get married.

There are some films like Lincoln or Contagion that I think can exceptionally accommodate a lesson, but the reality is a lot of the films we did watch were just action films like Gladiator or Saving Private Ryan that did almost nothing to teach anything. Like, if by watching Gladiator kids were instructed to read Marcus Aurelius's Meditations or were taught that work then that would be fantastic, but that wasn't why we watched Gladiator - we didn't learn shit from watching Gladiator.

Its part of the reason why government socialism is disliked in concept, such charity should already be existing from the individual is the belief. A proper God-fearing business owner should already be donating to charities and running social programs and giving back to his community. I really appreciate the explanation of how charity relates to distrust of the government. I can see why so much charity goes to waste because the motivation to contribute is higher than in most places but the heightened motivation is not enough to avoid grifters who run non-profits to line their own pockets while delivering a minimal amount to those who need it. its charming and a fun incorporation of conventional tropes executed well, not everything has to be dostoyevsky to be enjoyable
I feel like decades of really shit sitcoms from both the West and anime has really fricking cultivated low standards of situational comedy in the minds of people. So much so that when something with good charming writing comes along, like this comic, the visual similarities to the mountains of dogshit out there just makes it difficult for people to appreciate what the writing is doing. It could be dysfunctional family, school, fantasy, medicine, cartoon-whatever, all the tropey settings that have been so fricking terrible for so long that when some guy actually applies real charm to any of them they just get pitched aside as something people say they've seen before.
I think another problem is the way sex is depicted in comedy. In Japan sexiness often wreathed in positivity but unfortunately with a sense of perversion. In the West sex is valued but unfortunately something to be ashamed of or used like toilet humour. And neither of these things are healthy or relatable. In contrast there's the French who often depict sex as fun and natural with very little emphasis on any of the above negative traits. So in this comic here the "bawd" characters own their sexuality in a way that is healthy and adorable in a way that the West and Japan just really don't do.
