I bet they said the same thing about their Cowboy Bebop show. Netflix will never have a "big thing", Stranger Things was for a season until they ran it to the ground.

      Anonymous

Ya what Netflix says and actually believes are probably 2 different things. They’re desperate to cash in on the popularity of anime, they need something to cling onto to try and save their dying service and with how popular anime is in the west, being the first western service to really cash in on that could be huge. So of course they’re gonna hype up whatever it is they’re doing. But there’s no way one piece succeeds. I love one piece but it’s impossible to adapt to live action without looking awful. And especially considering the same production company behind one piece was behind bebop this thing is dead on arrival. Plus tons of diversity hires behind the screen will certainly butcher any adaption.

Most normalgays do not like anime, so they won’t be throwing their money at this. And among normalgays that do like anime most don’t care for one piece because it’s too long. I’m glad Oda got a big paycheck, but I can’t wait for this adaption to fail because frick Netflix.

        Anonymous

Most normalgays don't like sci fi yet star wars is a huge hit. if Amazon knows what they're doing this will be a huge hit.

Just realized this isn't amazon but netflix. my bad I'm a massive moron. Netflix won't make this work lol

          Anonymous

Not the same thing at all. Sci-fi used to be a huge and popular genre. Star Wars became a classic and a household name. Normies in the last likes Star Wars because normies in the past like sci-fi. It became a classic and household name because it was so good. So now normies in the present time still like it because it’s an already popular franchise.

Normies already know about anime, they just don’t like it and they won’t start randomly liking it now. Especially not with a series like One Piece, a show most normie anime watchers don’t really watch.

            Anonymous

I hate to say it, I know a lot of casuals who watch one piece.

Secondly this isn't anime but an anime adaption. Like saying normalgays don't read fantasy so they won't watch got.

        Anonymous

Normalgays might not like anime, but they do like pirates.
While it's definitely far less fantastical than One Piece, Pirates of the Caribbean is a whacky pirate fantasy series and the 14th highest grossing film franchise of all time.

You can't adapt like 90% of the shit in One Piece to live-action without it being ridiculous. Netflix has shown they can't even do Cowboy Bebop right, and One Piece is exponentially harder to do right in live-action than Cowboy Bebop.

      Anonymous

This this this. Cowboy bebop was very easy to convert to live action. One piece stretchy shit will be terrible. Berserk or Black Lagoon would be doable

        Anonymous

The people that "adapted" Bebop only watched it once and seemed to have outright contempt for it. One Piece might end up goofier than 90s Power Rangers, but there's at least a chance the writers didn't go out of their way to needlessly destroy and demean the characters in the most insulting way possible. Maybe.

              Anonymous

Irrelevant. There are 2 audiences here, anime watchers and non-anime watchers.

If they play it close to the source material it’s good for anime watchers. But lost anime watchers won’t like this because it’s live action, and something like one piece will look terrible live action.

If they play it close to the source material non-anime watchers won’t like it it, as they already don’t like it. So to attract non-anime watchers they’ll need to make changes and take liberties, which will eliminate even more of the anime watching audience. And those liberties and changes they make will fail to attract non-anime watchers because the diversity hires Netflix employs are incapable of making a good product. Plus non-anime watchers will have a very hard time ever watching something anime related.

Live action anime is good for absolutely no one, this shit needs to stop.

I think you're going overboard on the "diversity hire" stuff
I've seen a collage of like 30 characters they've casted for One Piece and the only sus one is Nami's sister, but even then it still works since Nami's sister was a brown girl in the anime
From what I've been told as well, Nico Robin in the manga was actually supposed to be light skinned but the anime made her dark and she was still beloved by audiences

Of course it couldnt compete with the exposure for a fricking Marvel movie but it wasn't an absolute failure either. It got decent reviews and managed to still turn a small profit. wow netflix is run by some dumb as frick people. How are they expecting to keep people watching for 100 seasons? Normies will be bored to death after 50 eps and netflix won't even produce this much before calling it quits due to low engagement.

      Anonymous

They’re doing 100 chapters in 10 episodes. It’s possible they can finish the adaption in like 14/15 more seasons. But if they’re gonna condense it that much the show will be shit.

Are these 20 minute or 40-45 minute episodes?

Netflix cancels anything that does not become the single most-watched thing in its catalog upon release.

        Anonymous

Only about 50 episodes of the show though. If you cut out the intros and recaps and do 45 minute episodes it won't be as bad but then again it is netflix so even if they made 25 episodes with 45 minute runtimes and $20 mil budgets per ep they would still find a way to make it unwatchable.

    >Netflix Identifies Live-Action ‘One Piece’ Show as Potential ‘Star Wars’-like Franchise
It will be like the Star Wars Sequels, full of Woke propaganda and diversity and women. Only it will make nowhere near the money.

It is impossible for Netflix to have a big franchise, because to create one would mean going against their Woke agenda and guidelines.

      Anonymous

To create a popular franchise you need talented and passionate people. You need creators. The stomper fact of the matter is that typically the people with creative vision, passion, and talent are white men. That why most original successful franchises are made by white men. But Netflix has diversity quotas, so they don’t want to hire white men who will create new things that could potentially become a house hold name. Instead their work around is to take already successful franchises, like one piece, and instead employ diversity hires to run, write, and direct the show. They also need to hire stooges who will follow the corporate orders. The problem with that though is you usually end up getting stuck with people just looking to make money and/or who don’t really care about the franchise. You get unqualified people with no or barely any any credits who have no idea what they’re doing. They care more about espousing their political and social beliefs and doing whatever the suits say than making a quality franchise. That’s why you get an abomination like Bebop, there is just little to no passion, talent, vision, or competency involved in regards to the actual quality of the product. This will fail for the same reasons. It will suck like bebop, the Witcher, etc.

        Anonymous

Have you seen any interviews with the writer or any set photos? Expectations are still low but from what I've seen it's more promising than bebop who thought they could have put their own spin on it instead of just sticking to the source

The incredible caricatural hubris of these blue haired Americans will never cease to amaze me
    >Pick a high-grossing franchise with nigh-universal appeal in basically every major market other than the United States, areas which are generally targeted as potential growth markets
    >Pick this singular franchise that is cartoony in visuals but relatively mature in its politics (for a lack of a better word) that was so hard to handle that the original dubbers of the anime literally had no idea what to do when they gained the rights to the series (4Kids), and decide to make a live-action series based on it
    >Series is mature and is entering its final arc after 20+ years of build up, series is the last of the 'original' long running shonen and its popularity on social media increased dramatically around 2016-2017
    >Merch so ever-present you'd think that Shueisha has the power of The Schwartz
It's literally too soon for this to be viable (for those who'd really want this to be something like Star Wars, which I suppose would require some additional 'spinoff media' along the lines of more books and comics, due to the series actually having a pretty well-established canon) and too late (peak time for this would've been in the early 2010s). I imagine that someone at Netflix knows that they can't afford to frick this up that badly, because unlike Bebop or Ghost in the Shell this is a series thats still ongoing and, crucially, is popular in a lot of areas of the world that make up the core international subscriber demographic; in addition, the series is more popular in the US than its ever been.

You can't make a "Star Wars like franchise" on purpose. You have to cast as wide a net as possible with as many different IP ideas as you can afford, and eventually one of them is going to blow up for who knows what reasons.

When JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter she didn't know it was going to be a Star Wars-tier IP that would make her a literal billionaire. And despite Universal Studios' best efforts, to pump it full of money, production value, and action figure potential, The Chronicles of Riddick was a box office flop. You have to try dozens if not hundreds ideas because getting an evergreen transmedia IP like that is basically like winning the lottery.

I want this to go the distance just so I can see the shit show on both sides complaining about the Kamabakka Kingdom. People will say OP is pozzed because of all the trannies/crossdressers and trannies will seethe and cope that they look like men in dresses and wigs complete with 5 o'clock shadows.
It wouldn't get that far for infinite reasons in reality, and they'd b***h out and make them look like normal people, but imagine if Oda demanded it be 100% faithful.

There is no way they could adapt that unless they really softballed it in. I could see them attempting Ivankov if they make it that far.

I mean Ivankov is literally The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

yeah they could. just have to play the drag queen angle doing cabaret shows angle.

          That's Impel Down 5.5.

That’s exactly what it would be drag show, then troony island would just be drag queen island where Sanji would learn from the drag queens rather than running. Also would make a guess that they would have one actual troony that’s not drag that Sanji will just fall for or he will get air walk chasing after the non-drag troony.

The normieization of anime and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

It might actually work. The casting isn't horrible and they seemed to have learn from Cowboy Bebop, stick to the source material as much as you can but more importantly understand the characters and don't self insert. Fans who like the brand want to see the brand not some hack writers who using an IP to showcase their own shitty characters in a a One Piece skin.

I have my doubts about Netflix's pulling it off but maybe

You guys are fooling yourself. If they botched Cowboy Bebop which has to be the easiest anime to adapt ever, go figure what kind of ungodly shitshow this will be. They have no clue of what made the original material of what they adapt good.
So it's either going to be a major cringefest like CB (which is the best scenario at it might be entertaining to watch) or an absolute borefest like Witcher and Sandman.

CB was straight-up awful, the only cringe part I genuinely laughed at was Vicious being a fricking dweeb and saying Moshi Moshi.

How are we fooling ourselves when this entire thread has been discussing how it's not possible for them to pull it off?

Read the thread, there's plenty of cope/hope in here.

The major concern is compacting all 100 chapters of East Blue in 10 episodes.
It means every episode must be at least 1+ hour long like the last season of Stranger Things.
