The point is he had to phrase it carefully to leave it ambiguous as to who would be who. Whereas actually he'd say something like

It's true that he could have said something very similar that would have defused the comeback head of time, but that doesn't mean that what he said was unnaturally phrased, you retard. In fact, his underestimation of Morty is a point repeatedly stressed throughout the episode, including in this scene. Morty being the Robin is so obvious to him that he does not feel it needs clarification.
