Something's fricky about those faces. I mean, I realistically don't expect we'll ever go back to the old art, but some of these people look like they're strangers trying to cosplay as Char, Nanai, and Mineva, it's not really close enough.

its definitely derpy. char's face is fricking tiny, for one.

To me it looks like they're off-centre, as if the artist's not comfortable drawing eyes too close to the edge of the head even when it's at an obvious angle

Serious question here: I know everyone over here hates Fukui and thinks the stuff he's done with Gundam is fricking moronic but does Japan think the same at all? From what I've seen Unicorn is inexplicably popular over there and is one of the most marketable.
Why is that? Is it literally just the mobile suits and the production values?

it's literally just most of this board that seethes over Fukui, most of the western audience either likes him or has no strong feelings about his stuff

The popularity of Unicorn is due to how it was a bombastic high budget theatrical return to UC, while pumping out a ton of high quality gunpla of both new and old designs. They appealed to everyone.

The end however was a massive tumble that Fukui refuses to admit was a mistake so he just keeps doubling down on it. There's a reason NT is absolutely nowhere near Unicorn in terms of popularity and revenue.

I e always thought this was mostly the case. I never underestimate the jap's ability to catastrophically shit taste generally but in the case of Unicorn I think most of it's perceived popularity has to do with the fact that it makes for good mechaporn with high quality animation showcasing a ton of old and new mobile suits as well as adding new cool variants of previous mobile suits. While I fricking hate Unicorn I won't lie to anyone and say it played no role in making me like alot of mobile suits I do today. Also we can't ignore all of the solid model kits we got out of it

It's not even Fukui's writing, the overall story of the UC is decided by Sunrise itself. He handles the script, but he's told what to write, all the story beats. Japan knows that. morons on /m/ just don't know what they're talking about.

          Anonymous

Except it is Fukui's writing, they approached him with a project and advisors to help with technical details, he wrote it. No, he didn't write the script. He wrote the original novels and story. The script writer of Unicorn was Muto Yasuyuki. All the stupid stuff was still in the novels except the Neo Zeong. Banagher is still the ultimate newtype and the Unicorn still turns back time after becoming a god-like enttiy

            Anonymous

Banrise hired Fukui to write the novels with the express purpose of making what he wrote into an animation, so there is no chance they didn't dictate terms to him on what kind of story to write, what time period to set it in, what kind of villains to use etc. He might have had some freedom within the strictures they set, but they'd still have set them and probably had executives go over the book and suggest changes before anything was released to boot.

              Anonymous

Considering his original draft for Unicorn (aka Moon Gundam) was 100% free reign, I kinda doubt that. It was only after he had to revisit it that he was given help and parameters.

                Anonymous

Yoshiyuki Tomino, the original creator of the entire franchise still (a) almost exclusively made animations for Sunrise on a per hire basis (as in, they'd hire him to write a show with specific guidelines; G-Reco is the only show he approached to make, so far as we know) and (b) got executive mandates regularly even during production and not just before it. If Sunrise are going to hand him dictums about animations and meddle in the production of his shows then why do you think they'd give Fukui, at that point a relative unknown with no real major success to his name, free reign?

His "Moon Gundam" draft was just something he sent to them as a consideration idea; something to get his foot in the door. Of course that was give 100% free reign, because he wasn't working for them at the time and just wanted something to put him on their radar. Gundam Unicorn on the other hand was written for them, with the express purpose of becoming an animation.

Nor, by the way, was Banagher the ultimate Newtype in the novels and the point of the ending is that there is a Newtype gestalt inhabiting the Unicorn. If anything is the ultimate Newtype then it's the Unicorn itself; not Banagher. Banagher is part of it, his soul having been absorbed by the psycoframe as the price for taking full control of the Unicorn through the NT-D for too long, but he is only a part of that and it's the fact that the collective consciousness that is probably a result of all Newtypes who have died and become one that is acting that makes the Unicorn so powerful.

An example of tell me you've never read anything in the moon Gundam draft without telling me you've never read anything in the draft. You could not be any more wrong. Go read his interviews.

                Anonymous

Okay, which interview would you like me to read? I've read this one for instance: https://criesinnewtype.wordpress.com/2017/10/09/fukui-harutoshi-from-unicorn-to-moon-moon/, where Fukui talks about the status of Gundam Ace when he created the concept for Moon Gundam, suggesting he submitted it there and Gundam Ace isn't even directly owned by Banrise. And if we look at the actual draft, or at least what's been translated of what was published of the draft (https://www.mechatalk.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16492), the draft shares a lot of names in common with Gundam Unicorn, but isn't very similar beyond that. The fact both involve NT-D is about the biggest similarity, really.

He also talks about having to put aside the Moon Gundam idea to make Gundam Unicorn, which again, suggests that Banrise imposed some guidelines on what they wanted him to do. So what part of that interview or the draft suggests Fukui had free reign? Why would Banrise give him free reign on Gundam Unicorn? Why wouldn't he have had free reign on Moon Gundam, when he wasn't even working for them at the time?

He was still involved with the script. A bulk of it literally quotes his novels verbatim and he still glossed over before animating.

I think the real thing that gets me about Unicorn's ending, past the "What the frick happened why is the mobile suit a timewarping crystal abomination now" was that in hindsight was the fact that it presents a perfectly legitimate and even not all that violent way to end the cycle of violence or at least slow it down with the whole "Let's defeat the Earth Federation with ECONOMICS" plan but instead of following up on that and having Mineva grow some balls she just doubles down on the suicidally stupid idea of being a do-nothing leader to Zeon and letting the EF do whatever they want because Full Frontal went bugfrick and ruined it.

It made me realize that a lot of Gundam protagonists looking back have a gigantic problem of even when they've got the capacity to solve problems don't. They never really fix anything, just blow up the latest Mono-eye piloting badguy and then refuse to address the problem that actually caused the entire mess in the first place and retire, at most mumbling some shit about "UNDERSTANDING" or what the frick ever and letting the problem build up again..

      Anonymous

It's because Frontal's economics was just a front for Side 3 to become a new authority over the Earthsphere that'd end up inviting a new war by simply reversing the roles of elite/poor, even assuming the other Sides even agreed to it in the first place. Which Mineva explicitly says. The Sides probably wouldn't agree though, given there's no indication any Sides have signed on so far and the Sides historically haven't joined Side 3's rebellions.

Which is presumably why The Sleeves were trying to stall the Federation to stop them dissolving Side 3's independence even though it wasn't due for 4 years, and why they just happened to have the most powerful mobile armor ever built to hand. They were totally going to peacefully accept the other Sides decision though, I'm sure.

        Anonymous

Mineva is a moron because the entire point is she didn't pay attention in her fricking economics and the Federation is canonically at a breakingpoint and is about to undergo their downscaling to try and deal with resource starvation. if the Colonies cut off their resources, because they're dependent on them for survival at that point, they flat out could not sustain a war against a real military power, hence Sleeves flexing their muscles as part of the plan.

Seriously do you even know Gundam lore, "The Federation post ZZ is *dying* has been a thing for like 30 fricking years now.

Yeah but that’s before they declare themselves as an independent nation, after that happens the federation launches a large attack force that get blown to shreds but coincidentally distracts them while Seabook and Berah destroy their flagship and kill Iron Mask

feddies were getting too comfortable with their older ms in f91 and were still using decade old shit
which is also a typical feddie thing to do, with the titans still using gm1s and barely-improved-zakuIIs all the way to the conclusion of the gryps war. Even Unicorn kind of tracks with the theme of feds refusing to update their suits, with a few zeta+(which aren't the worst old suits to have seeing that feds standardised the weaker regz during cca), gmIIs and nemos popping up but that's probably an even more cynical attempt to resell more old kits compared to titans having a redesigned zaku and zeon suits from MSX

            Anonymous

You know that in terms of logistical rot barely more than 20 years is *nothing* right? Especially since it's canon they've beens truggling since ZZ, it was why they didn't evacuate or try to fight a road out of Dublin, to lessen the resource strain even though Mashmyre would almost certainly have let them evac civilians since his orders only covered the EF military and he was a white knighting moralgay.

But that just proves Mineva’s point. The reason the EFF was willing to let Haman and Char frick around was that they thought they could profit from it. Hell, both of them essentially succeeded at buying their independence before it was fricked up by glemy’s rebellion/char’s genocide fetish. If you cut the EFF off from the trade network you’ve given up your only leverage.

Ah yes, because when people are poor and resource starved in UC they immediately give up and everything is peaceful. That worked out so well for the Federation in UC0078 after all, when Side 3 was so resource poor compared to them.

Generally Gundam manga, if placed like this end up doing some small things that conflict with the period

One example of this is the EFF in this. If my knowledge of UC Gundam is correct, the Jegan should be around right now. Yet instead we got a Jeddah for active combat alongside the GM III, and Moon Gundam seems to be trying to actively ignore its existence.

Alongside that Char's trying to produce a Psycho Plate fitted Bawoo rather than the Jagd or Psycho Doga, which is funny considering we haven't even seen the Geara Doga yet either, in any form

happy we'll probably be getting an actual animated inbetween of Z and cca that has Char going from assumed dead to having control over neo zeon eventually

which isn't a big new deal in cca because the opening has the sazabi being used as if it's like amuro and char have clashed with a rgz and sazabi a few times before
I think a lot of people assume it makes the production of the Nu seem like it's way too late, but chances are Moon and the titan remanents psychomu research wont end up in feddy hands given the religious and luddite nature of MoonMoon
