they honestly only need a script, to design new costumes for major characters, desgn any major setpieces, find actors
and then they can film it and let weta fix everything

they probably have 80 locations all over NZ that they have already put in a list for possible shooting locations, just places they've visited before when making the other 6 films, or new places they found on holiday over the last 20 years

The hunt and capture of Gollum is in the books, but to flesh it out to a whole movie is gonna be ridiculous. Especially when they try to line this up with the movies. Bilbo leaving the Shire happens years before Frodo leaves the Shire with the ring. The hunt for gollum takes place in that time, but in the movie it seems like it's been a week or so.

This is halfway through FotR during the council of Elrond. I think it might be intentional that it takes so long for the party to get rolling, a major issue of the alliance is that parties are slow to act, they think they have more time, the matter isn’t that pressing. Meanwhile the enemy is right on top of their ass with a full army

Eh, they should have probably trimmed one fight scene to introduce Imrahil or Beregrond & Bergil so we can have at least one Gondorian character who's not a dickhead to the Fellowship. That way the normies watching it wouldn't be constantly asking why they're even bothering to save Minas Tirith.

There's plenty of story left to tell (mostly in the past) but I doubt anything made today can compare to the quality of craft we had in the past. Most likely it'll be garbage, even the Hobbit started cracking early on with its padded "comedic" scenes and needless trilogy.

lots of great pieces from the OST either got cut in the movie, replaced with other music or just was way too silent you could barely hear it over the sound effects
LOTR's music is a lot more crowd-pleasing (and i don't mean that in a negative way), but the hobbit's music kinda feels more atmospheric and moody

Well anon, Tolkien wrote Middle Earth to be a hidden mythology for the peoples of England before the Anglo-Saxon integration. The entire premise in the first place is to provide an elegy for a culture whose original values were lost due to foreign assimilation.
I think that having black hobbits or elves would somewhat undermine this premise, as it would suggest the creation myth of these early peoples belongs to a presently multiracial, multicultural society.

English people were never black. It's too cold in that part of the northern hemisphere and the sun only shines half the year for that to have ever been possible. This is simple geography. Africans are black because the sun is beating down on them all year. Every culture along the equator all over the world have blacker skin because of this.

It's so funny that they can't create anything new. Even if they were semi-competent at it, in the way that Predator 2 for example is at least AN extension of the Predator franchise while also being watchable and semi-memorable. Or Terminator 3, which is just "fine," fine enough to be accepted by normies as a Terminator movie.

But they are so fricking incompetent that they end up making shit that even the dumbest normie Predator/Terminator fan rejects as utter slop.

But this is exactly what they want you ti think by making him producer, to make you think he's helming it again, and you all fall for it

What's the status with the rights? Christopher fought hard to keep them close and away from studio hands. I assume this Gollum trash is due to them still having LotR so technically can adapt anything that is talked about in the books as part of that time and setting. Whereas a full Gollum origin story, prequel is not allowed. Similar to how RoP can only tell a story without ruining anything or anyone before or after its second age restriction.

I fear the day the Tolkien Estate just sells out utterly is near and they give them all carte blanche to do whatever they want with Tolkien's creation.

This is what we need tho. We need tons of versions to filter out the bullshit. Anyone can make Tarzan, or Oz or Dracula. You're gonna get a bunch of trash cause there always is, but someone will come along and make a cool version.

Not true in the slightest bit. The license holder(s) and publisher(s) trump everything. If they demand that Gollum must now be played by a black woman, then the producers, director and writers can't do frick all.

That doesn't sound true. Holding the license of a creative IP allows you to produce it in a particular medium. As in, "I'm licensed to make this movie, sell this food", etc. Generally speaking, the producer(s) has final creative control since they are investing their money in the project. It would be ridiculous to think that I could put down 20 million of my own dollars for a project, and be told by some pencil pusher in licensing "ummm actually you have to make gollum a girl". It doesn't work like that. Feels like you're arguing to argue and don't understand how the creative process is organized. Maybe you've never worked on a creative project in your life.

You are the clueless one here, don't try to push this onto me. Execs have the absolute final say in most regards.

Are you genuinely under the impression that because this new Gollum movie has a producer who puts up the money for it to be made, he can just decide to change everything about Gollum that he wants? He can now decide that Gollum is actually non-cannon to the LotR universe and he was basically just a nightmare created in Bilbo's mind, for example? No, that's not how it works. Producers still have to listen to execs and license holders.

Yes, Executive Producer, which is what Jackson is going to be. He has been Executive Producer on nearly all his mprojects. He will have final say, or be in the small inner circle of other Executive Producers that have final say. I wouldn't worry so much.

Jackson has only proven to be a storyteller who is faithful to the universal spirit of humanity. His work is entirely free of party bias, prejudice, and partisan sympathy. I would argue that until he proves otherwise, we should only be excited for this upcoming film.

No I'm not. They were fine, nowhere near the incredibly high standard he set with LotR, but what I'm getting as is the Hobbit, as average as it was, wasn't pozzed or 'woke', which seems to be your fear here, so I wouldn't worry that this new Gollum movie will be 'woke' in any way.

You claim there wasn't anything woke in the hobbit, there are black people that was never described in the book put into the movie. There are BROWN people that were explicitly mentioned in the books and that have an important role in the story with a distinct culture, put into the lotr movies. I'm saying that getting bent out of shape over having a black person in the Hobbit as an extremely minor or extra role is silly. All of the protagonists in the Hobbit, and antagonists for that matter, are caucasian and fair skinned. Yes, I would take issue with them making an elf black, or a Dwarf arab or hindu or something. Because the elfs represented the Norse, and the Dwarfs the Welsh in Tolkeins love letter to the UK. But Return of the King was unironically diverse. The final battle has Arabs and Africans fighting.

I do assume he is racist if he can't handle a single black person in the Hobbit. Let me ask, which would offend you more: if they made a Dwarf black, or made him Asian?

Frankly, between both choices, it is more likely he will have a strong creative influence than not. The only producers who don't have strong creative input are the ones who have never directed or worked in creative, and Jackson has. It is highly likely he will be heavily involved in pre-production and the creative process.

Frankly, between both choices, it is more likely he will have a strong creative influence than not. The only producers who don't have strong creative input are the ones who have never directed or worked in creative, and Jackson has. It is highly likely he will be heavily involved in pre-production and the creative process.

                >This is a personal project, not like The Hobbit.
This is absolute cope, Zazlav already said he wanted to turn LOTR into their own Disney Star Wars. It's just the first step in his plan of MCU-ification the franchise. He said they needed to 'exploit the brand as much as possible' to investors
                >achually a Gollum origin story was what PJ has wanted to do his entire life
                just lol

More than the book. Nobody with exception of Tolkien fans remember the book exists.

"Somehow sauron has returned" is literally the plot of LOTR

        >somehow
He never officially returned, the events brought about in LotR by Sarumon are an effort to re-incarnate him so he can return.

Jackson needs to go back to making dumb gory B-movies again

He should do a game movie like God of War or a Star Wars Underworld show about the Hutts in the style of Andor. But only if they give him the same level of freedom they gave Gilroy.

I'm gonna be honest with everyone here, the Hobbit movies weren't even bad. In fact, they're actually quite good. Really good even, by fantasy genre standards. The LotR movies are so good that theyre almost impossible to match, but name me 3 other fantasy movies that are better than the Hobbit ones. I guess Conan? Especially the first Hobbit, which I thought was incredible frankly. I'm tired of the Hobbit slander.

Based Hobbit enjoyer. I agree. If they came out this year, they would be receiving universal acclaim.

Harry Potter isnt even in the same genre, its set in the modern world. But even then, I wouldnt say those are better than the Hobbit movies, certainly not when taken as a whole. They're about as good or maybe a little worse imo.

Only first 3 potter movies are watchable, rest is pure slop. Such poor source material should never had produced so many movies in the first place.

What does it mean a "LotR" movie
    is this a prequel? sequel?

seems like bait, the fact they mention it like this makes it seem like he's not working off original material by Tolkien.
