Wouldn’t say that for two reasons
            1. He was already in the original where the bunnies were 14, the age of one never had an effect on the age of them all
            2. Likely a one episode cameo at best since they went just about every old character to appear once, that doesn’t mean he’s going to be going to Looniversity. Like we know there’s going to be one moon episode and that’s probably where Marcia will appear only once, so I’d expect him to appear in something only once too. So he can appear in the show and the rest actually going to Looniversity be in college too

It's fine. Given the Animaniacs reboot I'm not expecting much. At worst it'll have shades of Velma. Art is definitely good, though.

In the original, I could buy Plucky and Hampton dating, not Buster and Plucky. Will seem kind of lame like they're copying Baffy when the characters are slightly different.

TLTS was mostly about Bugs, Daffy, Porky, Lola and Tina with the other Tunes as their neighbors. I suspect this show will be much the same.

                It’s not 100% accurate
Realistically, you can narrow frequently appearing characters as Bugs, Daffy, Porky, Lola, Tina and Speedy
A number of those make a a good number of infrequent appearances, a few appeared once or twice, and a number of those never appeared at all
Tiny Toons is likely going to be similar

Slappy Squirrel is by far the character whose absence was missed most/complained about the most with Numaniacs though.

Also, people had a good point that even with many of the weaker skits, they still added needed variety even if they usually weren't great. Doing the Warners/Pinky and the Brain/Warners skit format over and over got mind-numbingly repetitive with nothing to break them up. The "new" characters they introduced weren't in it much and also weren't very good, at least bringing back and retooling some old skits would have the nostalgia factor.

          >Sweetie
Sweetie gets in because WB has had a massive hardon for her inspiration character tweetie. Tweetie has been pushed as a big TT icon for girls stuff (ironic because he's a guy), appearing on loads of WB merch. This has lead to tweety being pushed as more of a "Central" character in recent Loony toons series and features.

As a corrolary to this, they seem to be pushing Tweetie as a big central character in TT, even though she was REVILED in the original.
TL:DR version, she's getting on for the same reason Elmyra got her own show: because the executives get the big bucks and make the calls, and the executives are often brain dead morons who have little understanding of the actual product they oversee.

I kinda like the idea that these companies are taking risks on finding new talent. Unfortunately, some "safe" IPs get slaughtered and sacrificed to the new talent so that they can cut their teeth and gain experience.

If they want to give new "talent" something to prove themselves with, they can do shorts, specials, or an episode on existing shows. Damned if I know.

There's something to be said for "taking a chance" on someone. I can get behind that. You kinda need to, you can't keep giving shows to only the "proven" creators. So sure, give a show to someone that was worked on a low level on some other show. Someone that made a webcomic gets a chance to do low-level art on a cartoon, then if they make a good pitch take a chance and give them a show. Sure.

But here we've got someone with no animation experience and basically no WRITING experience (so no art and no writing) being put in charge of the reboot of a Steven Spielberg property.

I'm befuddled that anyone is trying to "glass-half-full" any aspect of this. The showrunner's experience is that she did a "politics humor" podcast, where the other host talked 70% of the time, turning her into a sidekick. Beyond that she's done "funny" summaries of Game of Thrones episodes, where 90% of the humor came from the fact that the summaries were read aloud by a flamboyantly gay hairdresser.

That's basically the entire CV of the showrunner.

How the frick does anyone look at that and think "well maybe the show won't be TOO bad..."?

Of course you can. The upside of NuManiacs ditching most of the characters was that they didn't get a chance to ruin Slappy, capiche?
You can't stop this show at this point, so all you can hope for is minimized damage. That's not the same as saying the show is going to be good, or half-good.

She literally is the only showrunner. People keep insisting that other people might have a say too. Her fricking job title is "showrunner." Nobody else's job title is "showrunner." There will be other executive producers, but that's a job title that often means (1) jack, and (2) shit. It's pretty rare to find a showrunner that isn't, y'know... running the show.

                Well, at least they tried.

DuckTales 2017 was rough. Compared to this it was a masterpiece worthy of the animation hall of fame.

At this point WB should just sell their animation studio to someone else. They cancel anything remotely good, put people in charge that shouldn't be in charge, go "this is fine" to disastrously bad flash-level animation, and squander their budget on fricking Velma.

I'm talking about the voices of Donald's nephews that sounded disgusting in Nu-Ducktales, not the entire series. Nu-Ducktales had good ideas but bad execution and after the first season it is really unwatchable although I managed to watch it till the end. The fact that one reboot is better than another does not mean that the reboot itself is good. Same shit.

The only reboot that Disney did well was Paul Rudish's Mickey Mouse. It's what I can call a true masterpiece of animation, although I'm not a fan of those imitations of Ren and Stimpy styles. Yes, Warner Bros is really making a terrible mistake and why are they even investing in the freaking Velma series when it's the worst animated series ever. Though I'm amazed they don't use good animation and style like they did in Space Jam 2.

I give better than 50% odds that Looniversity started with a reasonable budget, wasted it through missteps during development and poor management, and is now racing to finish something with inadequate time and resources. I can't imagine many other scenarios where WAG would produce something that, frankly, looks subpar compared to some youtube-only webtoons.
They were still looking for character designers for this show last year. Imagine WB having to look outside the studio for help drawing Looney Tune-style characters. To say something is amiss would be putting it mildly.

To be fair the OG show was them in school learning about being a cartoon character. They had an episode with Plucky getting stuck in a exaggerated eye animation. I just can't get past the animation they use. This is something a Looney Tunes character would mock.

I only watch a small number of shows these days. Is this kind of "animation" normal? I'm assuming it's something to do with "puppet rigging" or something like that? Is this normal? Is this common? It's the first time I've ever seen something that looks so much like shadow puppet theatre. But without the charm.

            Anonymous

Rigged animation is normal in modern cartoons, but that alone is not the sole determinant in the quality of the animation. A lot depends on how the character is rigged, how much traditional animation is incorporated into each part/limb of the rig, and how much interpolation is used/abused.
Look up videos of The Ghost and Molly McGee, Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, Wander Over Yonder, The Wonderful World Of Mickey Mouse, Hilda, really anything by Mercury Filmworks to get better examples of rigged animation.

Jesus. Any animators around that can give insight into how far along this is? Is the animation still ongoing, with room for things to improve, or is this basically what's going to air?

I've rarely seen "professional" animation look this bad. Maybe like fricking Shezow...

We're still looking at mediocre sitcom level comedy though

There's no reason to assume the "finished product" will have animation on par with what was clearly some form of pitch animation.

            Anonymous

That's a rough cut, it's not finished. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rough_cut It's most obvious with some of the awkward transitions and there's even a scene where Sweetie briefly turns into storyboards because that scene wasn't finished. A lot of the dialogue and probably some of the effects are placeholder. However, with the animation, what you see is what you'll get.

              Anonymous

Yeah, the stuff where they clearly have awkward transitions or turning into storyboards was self-explanatory. It's this whole "traditional animation + rigged puppets" thing that's new to me. It used to be that if I saw a character walk across the screen in a leak I'd assume that's what'd air. With all this computer shit going on, I dunno if APPARENTLY finished scenes might still get improved animation or if we're just stuck with the dogshit animation that we just saw.

Well, here's the thing. With the advent of the 11Labs leak of deepfake AI adjusted voice actor clone software, and the advancement of AI assisted animation, Hollywood style animation productions are running on borrowed time. The software tech will continue to improve. It will get into the hands of talented and ambitious amateur production teams. We will see homebrew fan fiction animation as well as original created content (See - Murder Drones on Youtube) that will slowly take over as the new cool source of cartoons.

The shit is happening now, and it's going to fricking snowball within the next 8 years. Big production animation features will still happen from traditional commercial sources, but the consumer interest and competition is going to be a massive threat to those companies.

If anyone here is familiar with how the super nintendo and sony playstation one completely kneecapped the video game arcade industry back in the mid to late 90's, then they're going to recognize what's going on now. The commercial animation industry jamming The Message into their propaganda products are in for a very, very bad time.

Get it through your thick skull that Pantheon Season 2 is something AMC is thinking about selling to another service. AMC+ is not going to be around in 5 years, they've already lost the streaming wars. Their best bet is to wind down, put some good-but-not-aired-yet properties in a vault alongside the older shows they own, and go door-to-door trying to find another streaming service to sell their stuff to.

Leaking Pantheon S2 would be the dumbest thing an animator can do. Career suicide if caught, and you hurt the chances of it getting streamed properly on Netflix or Amazon or something.

I don’t know why but it’s funny as shit they went on about the main duo and it’s the story of them together facing challenges and we get to the show and they are almost entirely separate into Babs/Sweetie and Buster/Plucky/Hamton side arcs with them interacting with each other once in awhile

She's trying to make a show for kids, though she's obviously not very good at it. The resolution to the plot is so obvious that only kids could buy it.

              Anonymous

See, you're thinking this is her doing some clever trying-to-indoctrinate thing. Which I think is giving her too much credit. I think she set out to do a "show for kids" but isn't bothering to ever think of the kids. She's just doing what she thinks a kids show should look like. And she puts in drag not to teach kids drag is good, but because that kind of thing is all she knows how to do. She's spent the last decade on a politics podcast, agreeing with what the gay host says, and sometimes going "I did not know that!" This is all she knows how to do.

Putting all of that aside though, I sure hope she fails to make this a culture war battlefield, and it instead ends up one of those things nobody likes, like Velma. The animation sure deserves that kind of contempt.

Ya really wanna know why one's better than the other? Look at the weight in the arms. The dimension in her face. This graph is what they used for the Numaniacs style changes, and it's weird that they choose to make it so lifeless. I hate these stiff lifeless arms.

            >Look at the weight in the arms.
I don't feel there's anything inherently wrong with thin-to-thick limbs. The bigger issue is losing any kind of rhythm in those lines. The new Mickey Mouse cartoons does this too, but in a subdued way, and that looks fine.
Looniversity also has the problem of rigging elbows and knees. It almost always looks bad. Shows like Loud House and Ghost and Molly McGee avoid it by drawing entire arms as much as possible.

  95. 1 year ago

I finally found the will power to watch this entire thing in one sitting, and I came to a realization. I hate the entire concept. Even setting aside the technical problems, the foundation of the show is unworkable.
The Looniversity is the equivalent of someone explaining a joke. Except that person is a corporate accountant or some humorless analyst, and he's focused on the punchline to the exclusion of everything else. He doesn't care or understand things like ramp up or misdirection, he just looks at the data and draw conclusions like:
    >80% of people laughed at the pie in the face. So let's put in three times the number of pies.
    >People enjoy watching Bugs in drag. This must mean people likes transvestites, and we should explore that as part of Bug's psyche.
This show is accidental meta-commentary on why modern Looney Tunes doesn't work. No one understands gags anymore, and Looniversity is an unironic window into this dysfunction that is pervasive across all of WAG.

Well for ONE the segment goes on WAY too long. Most modern cartoons don't have the attention span to make a scene like this last this long even if it wasn't a panty shot. Someone really wanted to flex that they could do a walk cycle like this, regardless of the beefy robert crumb legs we're looking at here.

Sweetie is an improvement only because her original character was such utter dogshit that she actually realistically competed with Elmyra, often considered one of the worst cartoon characters ever, for worst character in the show. Anything less than literal dogs hit would be an actual improvement.
I don't even think this one is bad, but the new reboot thing where they take a female character and now her main purpose 8s to be a writer self-insert who spouts their political beliefs is getting a little bit repetitive.

        Anonymous

People say this but outside a throwaway line about how there’s few female characters (intentionally or unintentionally made funny in that all the new OCs they have made for this reboot are entirely male) how is she more a mouthpiece than any other character in this show?

Sweetie was a decent joke for one segment: while Tweety appears innocent and vulnerable, he's actually canny and clever. Sweetie ditches the irony and she's just extremely aggressive. It's a decent joke but it only works once.
