The caliber of the British Invasion writers was so much higher than American standard that I truly wonder why no company attempted to replicate the conditions that produced them.

It requires a combination or lower class/lower-middle class kids who grow up reading moderately rebellious kids comics about young hooliganism and spec fiction. In a region where post-industrial rot is starting to creep in by no one notices because industrial rot was just as shit.
People with nothing to do and a school system that segregated kids with art talent into their own stream. Followed by years of shit pay at the same young boy comics but that still could afford them to not starve.
Everything mentioned is gone or reduced now.

No, it's the fact that they're used as sales-boosting gimmicks, along many other things, that's ruining comics.

So true. Superhero stories are usually somewhat fine when it's contrasted against "normalcy". If it's just bnha and everyone has some kind of superpower then it'll be a meaningless, uninteresting world, too removed to any reality, rationality and sense to be enjoyable. It'll be just a cheap workshop job for writers to clock in and write something new.

Frick it might as well ask here. I'm planning on running a GURPs Campaign for my friends onEarth-7642 (Marvel and DC Coexistence) set in the late 90s - Early 2000s. What should I keep in mind, and would anyone want me to share my notes? Players decided that when we start they'll be X-Men mutants and choosing from 3 randomly rolled powers each.

      Anonymous

Interesting. Would you please share some more details about what's going on here?

        Anonymous

So pretty much, I want to follow an approximate timeline where the players will be taking the role of X-Men Gold Team as The X-Men Pre-97' go out and live out their lives. So I would be allowing Scott and Jean to go and spend about two years with Nathan before sending him off to the future, Logan goes out on his own to confront Sabertooth, Ororo is being courted by a pre-black panther T'challa, Magneto is in hiding after the events of Asteroid M. Meaning at the start of the campaign, the only active on-call X-Men are Jubilee, Beast, Morph, Rouge, and Gambit and Xavier. So no blackbird for them yet, but they can have The EXperience.

What I have in mind is to allow them, in the first arc, to get to know the combined world of Marvel and DC and how the citizens of DC could be more open to Coexistence, while the Marvel citizens usually have a track record of despising their heroes.

For story beats, I want Charles Xavier to bite it after the first arc and have Magneto inherit the X-Men. I also asked my players how they feel about other properties crossing over since Marvel and DC are famous for that, and they said it was fine, but they don't want to deal with space-level threats like Darksied, Thanos, Galactus, and others as the main plot of the campaign.

Some characters I have in mind that can open up more side stories and interactions are
        >Carmen Sandiego
        >The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
        >James Moriarty
        >The Amazing Screw-on Head

Multiverses and crossovers can work well if they are treated as something special and unique, like this big event that we would probably never see again in a long time.
But now it is just a lame excuse to do nosense and try to improve some character fame, basically.
