I think it will. Shit most of the people who missed the first Avatar in theaters still haven't watched it because they want to experience it on IMAX. I think Avatar 1 gets another theatrical run and it hypes up 2 even more.

Went to the review of curiosity.
She says that the casting is good and the visuals are as decent as any other Marvel film (lol) then immediately goes to say that those positives are negated because Thor is portrayed as a bumbling moron, like he was in the movie before, and that the special effects were a mixed-bag. She says it's the weakest of the Thor movies (lol) yet gives it a positive score. The way she talks about it makes it seem like it would be 1-star, right?
IGN does this same thing where they probably watch the trailers and decide what the score is then and there, not budging. I really think there is some guidebook for critics to be as annoying possible.

RT regular manipulates reviews. Not everyone uses a numerical scoring system. Some use an alphabetical score system or something like that. If they think they can get away it, they will flag a review as fresh or not fresh depending on how they want the movie to be perceived. Just look at the Ghostbusters 2016 reviews to see what I'm talking about.

    >Thor: Love and Thunder is constructed as a delivery system for jokes above all else. Taika Waititi has become known for a particular brand of rambly, deadpan humor, where bumbling men contend with competent yet ostracized women, and scenes extend just a little longer than most people would let them run, inverting dramatic moments into laughter.

    >In a normal, stand-alone blockbuster, the script’s dogged insistence on undermining every emotional beat with jokes, underserved characters, and a lack of sincere stakes would merely make it a passable, intermittently fun way to kill a couple hours. But cinematic universes don’t just add to the strengths of a film, they also amplify its shortcomings. As the next chapter in the story about a character who audiences have been getting to know for more than a decade, a film meant to present a new world of possibilities for what these movies can be, Thor: Love and Thunder isn’t just a misfire, it’s a scam. Its characters only move forward in the most artificial ways. Their status at the end of the film is no more intriguing than it was at the beginning. It’s the worst thing a film in this mode can be: inconsequential.

    >Only a few superhero franchises have made it to a fourth movie, and you can usually sum up how bad they are in less than a sentence each: George Clooney’s bat-nipples in “Batman and Robin” (1997), Nuclear Man fighting Superman on the moon in “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” (1987).

    >It brings me no pleasure to report “Thor: Love and Thunder” is worse. I wished I was actually watching “Batman and Robin” or “Superman IV,” because for all their camp, those movies felt less pointless and more human than “Thor 4,” a cheap corporate commercial for upcoming Marvel content.

    >“Thor 4” feels like a Disney experiment in just how bad Marvel movies can get before someone points out the emperor has no clothes. It feels like a Marvel movie that secretly thinks you’re stupid for liking Marvel movies.

      Anonymous

      >“Thor 4” finds Thor at what seems like an epilogue of a devastatingly tragic story. He’s lost his father, mother, adopted brother, homeland, most of his people and his kingship. Iron Man is dead, Black Widow is dead, Captain America is old, the Hulk is no longer angry, but like the Marvel franchise, Thor never dies.

      >So it’s yet another villain (Christian Bale), yet another crisis, yet more soupy CG minions with shadowy tentacles and spider legs, yet another barely 3-D planet with the cast (badly) greenscreened in. “Thor 4’s” effects would be embarrassing on TV 10 years ago, and they’re in every shot. The pacing is so speedy and sloppy, the movie feels like it was edited by an algorithm. Chris Hemsworth, who played the Norse god of thunder straight-faced for several movies before cracking a smile in “Ragnarok,” has now left behind any semblance of restraint or understanding of comedic timing.

        Anonymous

        >“Love and Thunder” is deeply cynical. It doesn’t pretend to enjoy doing this yet again. Worse, Waititi’s babbling satirical screenplay makes it feel like he’s mocking you for believing another Thor movie could be good.

        >“Love and Thunder” wraps itself up in progressive trappings, hoping that if you’re distracted by ribbons of representation — a woman getting Thor’s powers or multiple queer people existing — you won’t notice that it treats that woman as a plot device and those queer people as punchlines or, at best, window-dressing.

          >“Thor 4” is a bad farce of itself. It has no stakes, and no deaths are permanent. It doesn’t even pretend for a moment that anyone — even if they get a lightning bolt through the heart, or everything but their face gets destroyed, or even if they literally die — is actually going to exit this franchise. That would mean no spinoff series. That would mean less content.

          >And the worst part of it all is that unlike “Batman and Robin” and “Superman IV,” “Love and Thunder” will not be the end. When the words “THOR WILL RETURN” flash across the scene at the end of this installment, it feels like an ancient curse. You’re left to sit and contemplate how long before we stop pouring our cash on the altar of the corporate studio gods.

Taika Cohen is not an artist. He is a comedian that is symptomatic of everything wrong with our era -- irony, insincerity, irreverence, parody. He takes the Holocaust and turns it into a whimsical farce. He takes comic book films and turns them into self-referential cesspools of pop culture references and humor. A true artist confronts tragedy, adversity and futility. Taika Cohen shows these emotions and then winks to the audience to make them aware that he is producing media and entertainment, not art.

The inherent deconstructionism of "It knows what it is," gave birth to and was to the '00s what "Turn your brain off" is to the '10s. People saw self-referential meta writing as refreshing after everyone took everything so seriously in the '90s, but it wore its welcome out and showed a refreshing temporary change is not a stable paradigm to shift to.

Jason Aaron is one of the worst comic writers working these days. Most of this film is pulled from his Thor run, and while it seems Watitty made it worse it was still shit in the comics. Gorr, Jane Thor, her cancer, were all godawful comics written by that hack.

Actors with clout like Bale are given (or at least their agents are given) the script. No way the studio was able to rope him in with the synopsis of the comic his character was pulled from.

Maybe it was a Tom Cruise Mummy situation where in order to have the studio pursue a movie he wanted to be in (American Made) he had to headline in a stinker (Mummy)

Wish they would have just tried with Mummy. Wish people'd just stop seeing trash and back up the indie scene instead until well written scripts get the recognition they deserve

It’ll be hard to sell indie to Cinemaphile because the indie scene is even more dominated by queer/minority stories that are made out of earnestness, and not just to appease a market demographic like in mainstream Hollywood.

              Anonymous

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to say indie for indie's sake, frick the shitters. Just rewarding good scripts where they pop up even if it's two bros becoming more rather than just chasing high budget visuals. Since they can use those sales to remake it better but you can't pull a good script out of your ass as hollywood's decades of utter shit has proven. I'd like to believe that after roughly 30 years enough would manage to branch out genre wise so it'd be an acceptable growing pain.
There's something like 700 million english speaking homosexual chasers across the global market so they have the market funding wise for low budget script driven films they just need to actually put their wallet where their ideals are instead of feeding israelitesney then complaining about bad representation, characterization and shit all the time like fricking npcs.

If Taika had at least adapted the Gorr The God Butcher story properly, it could've been kino.

Gorr is a desperate annihilator of all Gods because they took everything from him, he came from a planet that was too cruel, yet through it all he kept his faith, even after losing his parents and his wife. But it was when he finally lost his son that the straw broke the camel's back and he went on a one man war against every God imaginable.

He even came close to killing Thor when he was a young god during the 9th century viking expantion.

His origin story is kino and Bale could've owned it had they given him the Thanos treatment.

Sadly, Taika had to cram his gf, Thessa Thompson and his self insert into the film.

He was always just ok, he made decently funny indie comedies in New Zealand, but suddenly exploded way too fast and started getting Oscar nominations and shit.

No wonder this moron's head began to inflate, Hollyisraelite once again forcing mediocre israeli directors down our throats and marketing them like they're the next Spielberg.

Worst part is, the story could have easily been adapted well. Gorr's a fitting villain that raises the stakes after Hela and introduces other gods to the MCU while establishing himself as a threat by taking out well-known Gods like Poseidon or Hades without needing an explanation for why the viewers should care about the guys he just murked. Hell, apart from Loki, Gorr's one of the few Thor villains that the general audience might know about with all those videos explaining his character and what makes him interesting only for the MCU to ruin him. Same thing happened to Taskmaster. I really hope we get to see some of the stuff that got cut.

I hate the word but it accurately sums up where things are now. "Content" is the pussification of everything, turning it all into a meaningless grey mass. After saying how much I hated Book of Boba Fett, my coworker asked me "Aren't you excited for more Star Wars content though?" and it immediately clicked into place the way the average normie thinks. They really do not care if it is a good film, a good show, a good anything. All that matters is that it is there for them to consume. Audiences have lost their ability to discern and parse, to understand and reflect. So to feed them nothing but a steady diet of tasteless pablum is exactly what they want. "Content".

they skimp out hard on the CGI because they know moron MCU simps will pay to see it anyways. This trend started being severely noticeable with the green screens and editing in Black Panther and got proceedingly worse from there. They did a good job with infinity war and endgame but the solo films are shitter tier CGI.

  26. 2 years ago

Marvel fricked up bad with Phase 4. Avengers Endgame concluded the storyline they were developing for a decade and the movie itself was incredibly banal for a grand finale since all it did was advertise upcoming Disney+ shows. Now Marvel has just been a cesspool of television shows and mediocre movies that have no solid direction since there's no continuous story arc between them. At this rate the MCU could very well die out within 2 years and just become a niche franchise for devoted fans instead of normies

His character was arguably more mature in the very first movie even with his super brash and aggressive attitude.

I don't think it'll make as much as the original, but it'll still do well. Audiences are so used to CGI live-action now that it just won't have the drawing power.

Maybe I’m from another timeline but I don’t recall it being such a big deal when it came out but everyone acts like it was and apparently… it was?. But I don’t know a single person over 30 that has even seen avatar or anyone who even mentions it in conversation.

Because it's entirely forgettable. It left no impact on pop culture at all, asides from the wave of CGI and 3D that came afterwards.

        Anonymous

The thing with Avatar that I remember most is that it's massive success had a lot to do with the peak of 3d, the fact that it was a movie that had to be experienced in a premium format, which helped inflate its gross a lot. Also really big international gross because its an extremely simplistic story easily translated

        Anonymous

Is that the same for the 40~50s crowd? Because I do remember the press leading up to that movie.
For better or worse, James Cameron hyped it up for years. I was finishing college when Avatar came out and that crazy bastard had already been saying his 3D movie was going to "change the industry forever" since I was in high school. It was particularly bad after Titanic's success, when everyone was holding their breath for Cameron's next project.
The thing is, Avatar DID have ground-breaking CGI, but the script was weak even for 90s Cameron. It's like an expensive dish with beautiful presentation that tastes like instant noodles. People just forgot about it.

Leave it to the MCU to ruin one of the few pieces of modern marvel that's not complete shit and not pozzed at all. I guess it was doomed from the start, since Thor is a competent, smart and heroic character in the comics, which is what made the story work among other things, and he's a complete joke in the MCU. I bet that the black b***h is going to be the leader of Thor's team in the movie and the voice of reason and Hershlag will get all the action scenes while Thor will just be another comic relief side character in his own movie.

      Anonymous

They ruined Guardians of the Galaxy, Ragnaröck, Planet Hulk, Ultron, Thanos, Thor since Thor 2, Taskmaster, Ronan, Kang, Blackbolt 2 times, Civil War, Secret Invasion, the Illuminati. They even took iconic speeches from Cap just to make it into a girl power moment.

Watching the MCU as comic book reader is just suffering.

      Anonymous

Problem with this one is he was given complete creative control, he didn't write Ragnarok so he was reigned in a bit. That movie worked because it had a marvel script, and Taika's unique visual flair and sense of humour. But he's too much on his own, all his solo movies are really mediocre. This one is clearly just an ego trip for him.
