This. Cherry on the top was how the total casualties of Napoleon was shown at the end. As if the Monarcucks didn't cause them in the first place. It's such a shit movie it's unbelievable. Ridley should just retire from making movies.

I don't particularly like the French, I find them to be the most arrogant of mainlanders, however, Ridley Scott is a moronic homosexual and I also hope he suffers a brain hemorrhage that leaves him unable to pollute other historical figures through his "artistic license".

          >I also hope he suffers a brain hemorrhage that leaves him unable to pollute other historical figures through his "artistic license".

I think he already has but nobody is willing to tell him he can't make movies anymore. Prometheus was utter dogshit and even Robin Hood was disappointing. His last great film was Kingdom of Heaven and he hasn't made a good historical film since.

The funny thing is the whole point of the movie seems to have been "so-called 'Great Men' of history just ruined people's lives" but Scott forgot to put in any scenes that make you sympathize with any of the regular soldiers by showing them talking at a campfire, awestruck by their emperor even though the audience has seen his faults, showing them wounded after a battle, etc. When the casualty count rolled at the end, it came out of nowhere because all the battles seemed small, impersonal, and inconsequential.

Even Spieldberg at least showed the horrific cost of the US civil war even though Lincoln was a puff piece. I'm hoping his version of Napoleon will at least be better than Scott's, granted the bar has been set very low.

Never saw Lincoln but it's such an easy thing to put in. I didn't initially pick up on the lack of common man scenes, but once it was pointed out to me it seemed like such an obvious miss. The movie shows Napoleon as a mediocre man to subvert the Great Man thing, but subversion like that doesn't work when he's shown as mediocre and barely involved in directing events the entire time. Not to mention the metanarrative clashes with this theme because the whole movie focuses on him and his wife and NEVER has a scene with anyone who isn't incredibly important. The only people I can remember having dialogue were people like Tallyrand, the Austrian or Russian emperors, Wellington, etc. Waterloo had multiple scenes of common British soldiers to give them a bit of humanity, and the scene with Napoleon fairwelling the Old Guard was full of pathos even without them saying anything. Maybe the whiff of grapeshot scene was supposed to accomplish that but imo it failed.

Just found out one of my favorite movies of all time was directed by Ridley Scott. I'm in shambles.

He used to make based movies. Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven are all among my favorite movies of all time. He started slipping with Robin Hood and with Prometheus he resigned himself to making slop.

Cinemaphile is as paranoid as Stalin when it comes to this idea of an grand Anglo conspiracy against Napoleon in the present. Scott's an old, old fricker who simply buys into all the bullshit about Napoleon being funny short man in big hat which laughable contrasts with the idea of him being a proto-Hitler - oh, and the whole book about Napoleon being a blueprint for Hitler was written by some French-born and raised guy of African or Carribbean descent, not some stuffy English academic. In reality, people either in the UK either don't give a shit out of ignorance, only really care about Napoleon in the context of national pride, or outright admire him, as if the case with the professional historians of recent generations, i.e. Chandler, Roberts, Broers, etc.

Ridley Scott wants people to stop liking Napoleon. Why I don’t know since he’s been dead 200 years but that goes to the roots of Anglo seething

The French do not like Napoleon either. His 200 year came and went with nothing. People are completely disinterested in history unfortunately

Gotten over what? Napoleon didn't ravage England the way he did Prussia after the 4th Coalition, he got soundly beat in the big naval encounters, at Acre, Wellington did well against his Marshalls, and then when he finally did fight an army with lots of British soldiers and commanded by the British in a pitched battle, it was at Waterloo. Everything with English opinion re: Napoleon in recent generations has either been ignorantly buying into the generations old propaganda or a reassessment for the positive that is spearheaded by professional historians (so keep your MUH LINDYBIEGE! shit to yourselfs). You very question ousts you as a foreigner to the UK. I'm not so I know for a fact there is no Napoleon seethe as part of the current national culture/character.

        >he got soundly beat in the big naval encounters,
He never commanded a fleet so this point is already horseshit.
        >at Acre
        Ottomans suicidally defending.
        >Wellington did well against his Marshalls
He couldn't annihilate demoralized and poorly trained French armies.
Ney blocked him from pursuing Massena.
Soult blocked him at every turn in Spain and pinned him down in southern France.
His biggest victories in Spain were Salamanca (against Marmont who was incapable of independent command and was shot early during battle) and Vittoria (against the old fart Jourdan and Joseph Bonaparte who knew jackshit about military affairs).
        >and then when he finally did fight an army with lots of British soldiers and commanded by the British in a pitched battle, it was at Waterloo.
Blatantly false. More than half of the allied army under Wellesley's command were Dutch and German with their local commanders such as Prince of Orange being key leaders who contributed to the coalition victory.

        >no u cope after the retelling the biggest cope in French military history bar the English ran away at Dunkirk

napoleon was beaten by time the prussians arrived, they arrived just in time for mop up duty at best. Despite this no English person really believes it wasn’t an allied victory anyways

        >napoleon was beaten by time the prussians arrived, they arrived just in time for mop up duty at best.
Blatant lies, again. Wellesley's front lines were already withdrawing with the rest of his forces being at breaking point and all of their reserves being used. It was the emergence of fresh Prussian forces at 4PM that turned the tide of battle and secured a victory.

Cope and seethe little froggy boy, if you deny proven and written history as “Anglo propaganda” then there’s no arguing with you
