I'd just like an office job of some kind. I know they're not fun, I know the boredom and vague imposter syndrome anxiety is soul-draining. I know wasteful, inefficiency corporate bureaucracy will make you tear your hair out trying to get anything done. I've done it before. And I would take it back in a heartbeat after having to work retail. I will never complain about pointless meetings again if I never have to interact with stupid, mongoloid dispshit retail customers from behind a cashier ever again. I worked in Costa coffee before getting a corporate job and it's unironically the only time I've considered killing myself. Its fricking draining and you get treated like shit by everyone (I used to spit in food and drinks for that shit so be nice to controlling what you eat). But yeah I now work in an office and I couldn't be more grateful for the bullshit. When I doubt doing it I just go back to Costa and remind myself of how much I hated working there
This idea that you have to find purpose through your job is one of the most evil things boomers ever came up with.
A job can just be a job. You can find joy in it through doing an honest day's work. You don't have to be a special snowflake in search of a "calling", for most people that leads to misery because it's doomed to failure.
It also makes employment more prone to abuse because employers exploit the fact that people want their "dream job" and are willing to put up with a lot of bullshit to get there.
A job must be, by definition, miserable. Otherwise there is no point in paying you, you would just call it a hobby and do it for free if you got joy and fulfillment out of it.

It’s only soul sucking if your coworkers suck. All my coworkers are cool and they ended up becoming my best friends. I also take off whatever days I want so I rarely get burnt out. But to be honest the only soul sucking jobs I had were the retail jobs I worked during college. At least with my post college job all my coworkers are college grads and are smart. Whereas in retail most of your coworkers are bottom of the barrel subhumans and the customers see you as that as well. Managers don’t respect the fact that you have a life outside of work as well and will ask you to come in on your days off whereas if I just didn’t feel like going to work tomorrow I could just take a pto day and nobody bats an eye. Also I literally just go in and work maybe 10% of the day and shoot the shit with my boss and other coworkers and we go out for drinks after or hit the gym. Despite most of my coworkers having been there around a decade on average, I was already getting top 5 performance numbers. Then the company decided to downsize as we were headed into a low business period of the year, and I was the most recent hire.
What do you do at a warehouse all day? Just move product around? I know at factories you run machines to make stuff, but warehouses are just big empty buildings filled with stuff and no machines

He could have spent most of his day reading books, doing crosswords, drawing or anything else. If he had hobbies outside of work, those could have occupied him during work too.

Then the company decided to downsize as we were headed into a low business period of the year, and I was the most recent hire.
