I was mentally cheering for Paul when he picked the Princess over Chani and I hate that ending shot of the movie.
I think at the very least you can view Paul as a tragic figure. Just like the rest of us, he didn't ask to be born, and he didn't ask to be born as the product of a superhuman breeding program. Dune is also very deterministic. He is more or less trapped by fate, and his fate sucks. Alternatively, you could say he is too immature to see the other options if there were any that worked.
