Why the frick do people discuss nutty putty ad nausuem without doing the slightest fricking research into what actually happened????
They did not just """"""""""leave him there"""""""""", he died from a heart attack ~20hrs after becoming trapped. They did not have time to attempt all this crazy shit like breaking his legs or tunneling to him.
Another point people don't understand is that the passageway leading to him was almost as narrow as the hole he was stuck in, they didn't have room to bring in huge tools, only a handful of the people on the rescue team were small/skilled enough to actually get to the point where they could even see his feet.

No. He was a plumber who was trying to fix a sewage issue in the building when a fermented rice blob caused a gas buildup which caused a pressure vacuum that sucked him into the toilet reservoir. It's reported he screamed for days but the residents thought they had installed talking toilets (big thing in Japan).
