Was Bruce Lee a fraud irl?

he got fraud checked as soon as he got to the USA. He DID popularize the concept of MMA but that was because he got absolutely shit stomped by boxers, wrestlers, jiu jitsu gays ect. He realized kung fu was dog shit and had to adapt. But that's why he started learning all the western fighting arts.

ah yes, like american karate and canadian tai kwon do.
some miserable stinking ghetto favela larpers didn't invent anything apart from ramming their faces into sweaty men's crotches.

the slavs and romans were the first crotch sniffers, then the japs after them, then the brazilians started their own form of crotch sniffing which then got popularized it in UFC 1.

                ju jitsu is japanese.

like I said, america karate exists, but I wouldn't ever say it is a 'western' martial art. it's karate, japanese.
if a pack of stunted apes start shooting each other with bamboo blow darts, then I'll accept that as a South American martial art.

compared to his peers at the time not at all.
He tried to move on from the silliness of eastern martial arts and his philosophy is relevant in the contest of martial arts even today. There's a reason many regard him as a pioneer of mma

        Anonymous

This is an important point. Eastern martial arts were indeed fricking stupid and fake at the time, but he made a conscious and concerted effort to try and develop a system that actually works. Now compared to what we know now would he just Michael Jordan over everyone in the UFC effortlessly? No, of course not. But being willing to get shittalked by all of China just to try and develop something that wasn't fraudulent was a huge deal at the time and helped move the field forward.

          Anonymous

It's either he dabbed on China or he is a "chink" himself and therefore was a "fraud". No matter what your opinion on the Dragon, you have to showcase a stance against China.

We were always at war with Oceania.

Look I frickin love Chinese history and think some parts of China are rad, but martial arts was genuinely a joke for hundreds of years and is only just now starting to regain some semblance of credibility. Chinese Kung Fu actors were and are amazing but you gotta call a spade a spade sometimes, China had been happy to coast with martial arts being smoke and mirrors to the Western world as being an actual effective thing for a long time before Bruce came around

No. It's just midwit redditors trying too hard to look smart that say he was just an actor. He was a world class athlete and phenomenal martial artist, and his martial arts philosophy was way ahead of his time. He was basically advocating for MMA 30 years before MMA even existed, and probably would have went further down that path in his own training if he hadn't died so young. Contrary to popular belief, Bruce actually did train grappling, and acknowledged its usefulness after getting manhandled by Gene Lebell. This is the reason that the opening fight in Enter the Dragon had grappling in it. He was also aware of Muay Thai to some extent due to his filming in Thailand, which is rather impressive, because that shit didn't really become well known until a decade after his death, at least. He was undeniably influential in the earliest foundations of MMA, along with, of course, the Gracies (who made a more practical contribution than a philosophical one like Bruce did).

He was his high school boxing champion, fought in street fights (basically gang violence), took challenges from random morons on set, fought Wong Jack Man, sparred with champion karate guys. He fought plenty. He just wasn't competing. There's a difference.

Yes there i a large difference.

Just because your riced up civic is fastest in your town doesn't mean you have shit to say at a formula one race.

true. which is also why no-contact sports point 'fighters' like charles norris are just guys doing a little sports hobby and have never been in a real fight.
it's always funny when americans can't accept this.

Also funny when they think that competition is the ultimate pointer. Like, how do people think martial arts evolved? And what part of that movement in time is competition? Is it beneficiary or not?

exactly. which is why all the no-contact competition sports gays from the 70s/80s in the US are thought of so highly by the same ones that think wrestling is real and follow all the drama plots.

They weren't real fights, like MMA. Where you can win just by leaning on an opponent without even attempting to hurt them. Where title fights are contested by punching air for 25 mintues. And blocking knees with your face default defense, if your opponent knocks you out, they lose.
Real hardcore fighting for real hardcore fans.
