Yep, the Ainu people! They had more facial hair and a more 'western' appearance, some of them were handsome motherfrickers like Toshiro Mifune here. The Chinese and Korean blood mixed in and gave the Japanese a more round and hairless appearance

Stop AIDS Campaign (STOPエイズキャンペーン): Tetsurō Degawa went to LGBT Bars in London, San Francisco, and Sydney with a hidden wireless microphone to distribute condoms. During one distribution event, Degawa signaled he was being sexually harassed by a man but the staff of the program did not step in to help him. The program that was ultimately aired has the audio recording of Degawa being sexually assaulted. Degawa later reflected this to be the "most horrific" location shoot ever in his life

Did he have the option or means to opt out of the "game" at any time? If yes, then no, not torture, if no, then yes, torture.

I think you could argue that being bullied his whole life made him psychologically unwell and easily manipulated to the point where he allowed them to psychologically torture him.

I don't think he have any contact to the outside world except when he receive random mail. Dude went from ugly fat asiatic to lean but deranged in less than a month. He can even easily survive when they put him on some random beach for a summer holiday break.

The money belongs to him, they even said it at the end of the series. He even got a contract with ramen commercial during the torture. That is how they paid him. CM is a big deal for japanese entertainer.
