very much. to what point snyder's understood the comics is debatable, but he clearly loved it

I don't like the fact the new series they announced uses that weird CGI from marvel's what if, but if they stick close to the comics it might be good

we're talking about adaptations, anon. v for vendetta is a good movie (although wuite on the nose in some parts), but as far as adaptations go it raped the original hard

No, it was awful, Snyder completely misunderstood what the comic was about and recreated it to the most superficial standards possible. Great cast, great art direction, great source material horribly ruined by being entrusted to a moron.

yes, very well directed, very well cast (yes even the pretty girl's acting is just fine you homosexuals), good pacing, great effects, and as far as I can tell pretty close to the source material so I give it a 9 out of 10 thumbs up

The alien isn’t a bad choice in the comic. It’s expressing that humanity ended up so divided that only a truly outside force could unite them. Dr Manhattan ends up cutting ties with humanity either way, because with his power he “should have” been able to stop the “alien invasion”, but having him be blamed for the attack, especially when he was so recently allied with America, and when he was once a man like any others, muddies the waters in two ways too many

Having said that, the explanation of how the faked alien came to be (which also characterises Veidt further), would take too long to fit into an already long film, and grind the excitement of the race to the final confrontation to a standstill.

Watchmen is overall quite a good adaptation, but it’s also honestly completely unnecessary. You can just read the comic, and it’s better in every way. By trying to be like the comic, and not making it’s own stylistic choices, the only advantage for the movie is it will appeal more to people who didn’t want to spend the time to read the comic. And they’re just not the target audience of the story both versions tell.

          Bullshit.
Just becasue they made it that way, doesn't mean i couldn't be different or you have to defend how it was made.
They could have removed the sex scenes and a bit of slomo and they would have had enought time to exlain it two or three times, if somethign lasting few mins more is that big of a concern.

Ok, I admit that was a completely fair point. It’s been years since I watched the film. I went too soft on it. The people who didn’t want to read the comic probably want slow mo violence and sex though.

Alright, listen up, Mr.homosexual. The bomb in "Watchmen" (2009) is way more convincing than that giant squidward from the graphic novel. Think about it: a massive explosion that threatens to obliterate everything in its path is way more relatable and scary than fricking squidward dropping out of nowhere. The bomb taps into our real-world fears of nuclear disaster and political brinkmanship, which hits closer to home. Plus, it's a direct consequence of human actions and decisions, making it more grounded and impactful. The squid? Yeah, it's weird and all, but it's more like something out of a sci-fi comic than a gritty, realistic reflection of our own world. So yeah, the bomb wins for being more convincing and making us think about the mess we create.

Alright, here's the deal with that twist in the movie's Watchmen ending: Veidt's master plan to frame Dr. Manhattan with nuclear explosions is next-level strategic genius. See, Veidt's whole shtick is about controlling perceptions and outcomes. By making it seem like Dr. Manhattan went rogue and started vaporizing cities, he manipulates the entire world into uniting against a common enemy..Dr. Manhattan. This move plays perfectly into the fear and uncertainty of the Cold War era.

Now, using actual nuclear bombs to simulate Dr. Manhattan's powers? That's diabolically clever. It's like a massive, geopolitical magic trick. The world sees devastation and assumes it's the work of an all-powerful being they can't control. It pushes nations to put aside their differences for survival, just as Veidt intended.

Compare that to the comic's giant squid. Sure, it's shocking, but it's a one-off shock that doesn't resonate the same way. Veidt's adaptation in the movie ties directly into global politics and existential dread in a way that's BELIEVABLE and IMPACTFUL. It's about manipulating perception on a grand scale, and that, my friends, is why the movie's ending makes more sense.

Although I appreciated the Owl and Silk Spectre slow motion fast forward fight scenes and some scenes being direct recreations of the source material, the additional scenes added nothing and were more like the director showing off as if he knows better than the source material. The alternate Vietnam flower moment, a hand getting shot in half, Veidt being the obvious villain with Everybody Wants to Rule the World playing, removing the giant squid, none of it made the story better than the original, and a lot of key moments from the source material are missing. In conclusion, Watchmen (2009) is a flawed adaptation that misses the point of the original.
