He was given a chance to make a mostly clean exit and chose conflict instead, which is really a microcosm of the whole movie. Rambo, he was a violent homeless minority coming into a quiet all white town. They even offered to give him a ride to where he was going. The moment whites stopped gate keeping communities everything went to shit.
The real villain was the sadistic cop who later died falling from the chopper. Teasle acted like a king in the town, Rambo was kind of a bum with untreated ptsd, but the one who screwed up everything is the butthole (who was aware of who Rambo was at this point).
