O.K what the frick? This feels shlocky on rewatch

I genuinely thought this was one of, if not the best war film but on rewatch everything except the opening sequence feels over done. I thought the detractors were being contrarians back in the day but I now actually kind of get where they were coming. This is bizarre because very rarely has my opinion on a film shifted like this. I wonder if this is because I'm more cynical these days.

I had a realization when I was watching this as an impressionable 13 year old that this was dishonest film. My appreciation for Spielberg has diminished considerably over the years. He's skilled at making thrillers. Anytime he steps outside of his lane, the results range from mixed to terrible. He cannot into drama.

      >I had a realization when I was watching this as an impressionable 13 year old that this was dishonest film.
And I don't think Spielberg even realises it. His issue is that he tackled this film with the mindset "O.K this is a weighty topic, I need to make a deep film with messages and shieet, I need to get this right to be taken seriously as a serious filmmaker". Actual good artists go "O.K I have something to say about this war/event and want to explore certain themes and ideas that interest me".

That's what separates honest war cinema(Thin red line, Letters from Iwo Jima, Das boot, Paths of glory, Dunkirk) and dishonest gimmick shit like 1917, SPR, All quiet on the western front (2022).

Essentially this. Spielberg is a quintessential popcorn director which isn't bad. It comes off as kind of embarrassing when he tries to tackle something "serious" and is akin to a college freshman paper inserting big boi words from a thesaurus. The result is hamfisted pretentious entertainment.

SPR is pure Hollywood anti-German propaganda. It's also the most entertaining movie Spielberg ever made. Sometimes it do be like that. I first saw it in the theater while tripping balls and chugging vodka. It was intense.

I disagree. Jurassic Park is his best entertainment vehicle and it has none of the sentimental cheese and propaganda overtones that poison SPR.

I saw Jurassic Park. For what it is, it's a fine movie. Thrills 'n chills and such. Just not my thing. I'd rather watch dudes get blown away.

I still laugh at that scene where that "coward" (Upham?) fails to save his israelite friend from being knifed. I can imagine Spielberg going "See, See, guys? War is hell, some people aren't up for it and their cowardice costs lives, get it? Get it?"

That's basically it. Every single movie he's made that wasn't predicated on a B-movie-style premise feels really soulless and perfunctory, as if he realized the importance of the topic but couldn't quite bring himself to give it any personal bent. I honestly wonder if he enjoys directing that kind of material or if his heart is still in his Duel/Jaws/etc. days.

His last somewhat soulful work was what? Catch me if you can? I have never seen a "famous" Hollywood filmmaker continue to put critically acclaimed flicks that often goes for oscars as well but at the same garner little to discussion regarding his films. Spielberg films used to be talk of the year back in the day but now they're forgotten the month they're released.

Maybe you've watched too much real war footage of the War on Terror/Syria/ISIS over the years and realized that all the "heroic" stuff is kinda campy.
I mean there's a reason Generation Kill is so beloved. Military members are portrayed accurately where they goof around with no pretensions of glory, but are still competent at their jobs and take things seriously.

Agreed 100%. I believe it is because action and war movies have become so much more realistic the last decade. Movies like 1917, Dunkirk and All quiet on the western front seemed to capture a previously unseen realism of war. I don't know how you can watch those movies and not grow a profound hate for war. Completely unrealistic war-hero movies aren't cool anymore.

I actually liked American Sniper tbh. That gets unfairly labeled as conservative propaganda for some reason. Eastwood is a more thoughtful filmmaker than people give him credit for.

Not the other anon, but isn't American Sniper thoughtful precisely because it isn't just hero worship? I agree that it's certainly a more interesting and sophisticated piece of art than the source material at any rate.

          >but isn't American Sniper thoughtful precisely because it isn't just hero worship?
Yes but journos and plebbitors decided to circlejerk it as a hero worship conservative propaganda(because apparently it's inaccurate to real life where Kyle is apparently even more mundane as an individual). So that stigma has stuck.

Pretty much. It's pro-war movie that's masquerading as an anti-war movie. It's basically praising America's role in ww2 and promotes the idea of the good war.
