Moore fully agrees with V who was such a good person that he recognized that someone as violent as himself should not exist in the perfect world he wanted to create, which is why he committed suicide by cop and groomed a young woman into becoming his kinder, gentler successor.

V was self-aware enough to know he primarily cared about getting revenge on the system rather than rebuilding after topping it. Rorschach has no such self-awareness and is mentally unstable individual who kills himself when he can’t handle his flawed black and white worldview crumbling.

He’s dead so it doesn’t matter. V was first and foremost interested in tearing down the people and government that abused him and after accomplishing that he was ready to die. It’s up to the new generation to figure out what they want.

Now he acts like he never expected anyone to ever be endeared to Rorschach and thinks it's strange that he has fans.
Even though that whole sequence with the shrink trying to make a name for himself by psycho-analyzing Rorschach pretty much just exists to make the character more sympathetic and to help the reader understand his resolve beyond a surface level.

          >it's strange that he has fans.
I dont think he thinks its strange that Rorschach has fans, he probably just finds it weird that people think Rorschach is fully in the right in everything he does and not a violent psychopath who sometimes does good things but who mostly just gets off on beating the shit out of people worse than he is. Even more so when the dude is shown to be clearly wrong about the whole investigation just because he cant picture Veidt, the pompous homosexual, having the guts to kill superheroes.

Thats probably the thing. Moore might be astonished why people are fans of him. Maybe like Zack Snyder made Rorschach really bad-ass. But Moore should know how surface level the average joe can be. I mean Starship Trooper is seen by most people as an Sci-Fi action movie and the satire is kinda like the weird sprinkles on top for flavour.

            Anonymous

Moore has a very close connection with Rorschach, not just because he wrote him, but because he became him when he wrote him. He put pieces of himself into the character.
Someone that just watched the movie is so far removed from the original character, that when they say "Moore didn't understand Rorschach", it's pretty ridiculous.

Moore is more disappointed because he expected you to actually dig a little and see just how bad he is at what he does. How he mostly makes things worse and how he's not someone you're supposed to want to be. He's a man who says he only see things in black and white and yet has a ton of hypocritical exceptions for. He's consistently inconsistent with his beliefs when put up to any scrutiny. His death is treated as an act of defiance when it's due to his in ability to cope with the situation at hand.

They are very reliable. It depends on the interrogator. You need to have a sense when a person is just docile to stop the torture. But as long as you ask intel and not if he has done, they cant lie to you. If you want a confession there is not a problem as long it is a short torture, if it takes days, people will lie to stop torture.

Hey look. I fricking HATE Alan Moore. I think he's an overly emotional BITTER twat that, as petty as his hair is long, BUT Rorschach is supposed to be the crazy right-winger that Alan wrote him to be. Alan Moore wanted his Question that was all about Right politics and Alan Moore wanted to rake his version of the Question over the flames. The problem is Alan Moore is a smart dumbass who can't understand people and won't get that Rorschach was a Righty. They'll just see him being the only hero keeping it real. The only hero that wants to stop crimes all the time. The only Hero that wanted to tell the truth no matter what and Alen Moore was too fricking stupid to see that people gonna like that in a hero.

      Anonymous

      >and Alen Moore was too fricking stupid to see that people gonna like that in a hero.
I don't think that makes him stupid, I think that's just people in general being complex and stupid. It's fine to think that some people will see past the hypocrisy, favoritism, prejudice, piss and shit filing, random violence, lack of hygiene, and insanity when perfectly reading and understanding the character and still admire him because he chooses to be autistic about the brain squid mass murdering while being cool for nuking non-whites and killing pregnant non-white women. I'm sure he knew it was possible to misunderstand the character or be a genuinely fascist reader who sees Rorschach as ultimately useful to a pro-white position if he were real. The problem is his misunderstanding the popularity and audience, how that wasn't just a group of readers who had the reading comprehension required to conclude that Rorschach is bad. Reduced to the basics of the end of the series, it's just heroes complicit in mass murder vs a guy who wants to do the more basic right thing even if it means nuclear war.

"Telling the truth no matter what" and seeing him as a hero isn't a problem with his writing, his "surprise" regarding this perspective is one of his expectations of the size of his audience and who his audience would be comprised off.

I dont think they are random people. Rorschach targets people he can connect to crimes or criminals. And the ones we see are criminals.

              This.

Moore wrote two Vigilante issues where the titular hero is depicted as an idiot that fails to protect his client and gets his own bike stolen in a particularly dangerous street. This was a year before Watchmen.

What was stopping Moore from writing Rorschach the same way? It was an OC, he could do pretty much whatever he wanted, even an Ennis-tier slapstick parody of The Question.

                Anonymous

Indeed. Moore really writes them in-character. There is some saying that a creator sometimes cant controll their created characters. Because they have a characterisation and can only be written within their limits.

                Anonymous

It's more like some writers have the idea that their characters act on their own. It's something I've mostly seen professed by amateurs, and I think it's them glamorizing their hobby. Because it's kind of a stupid sentiment. At best, it's the realization that a certain action wouldn't fit a character's established personality. But if you want it to happen hard enough you can actually go back and edit your previous writing to make it fit. So really it's just the author having a certain idea about how a character should be, which is fine, but then say something like "I planned for the plot to progress by this character doing something, but after writing him for so long that no longer fits my idea of what the character should be, so now I'm going to change the plot to make it work".

I dont think that this is some amateurish behaviour or excuse. It is just a poetic way to vernally formulate the problem with their characterisation.
And you are right with the power to change the story. But the problem is when you already published story material or to scan your writings to for parts you now need to change that.
I think Arthur C. Clarke did an interesting explaining with his 2001 books plotholes/changes. He said that all 4 books are the same story but set in a different reality.

I think at that point everyone decided the book was so old there wasn't much point in trying to make it a TWIST so they just went with "have him portrayed as a psycho to the audience but not to the characters in the movie"

I cant tell if you get it when you didnt read the book. Kinda like it feels obvious that Korvac is Rorschach. In the book you get the street characters, but in the movie they are so small that Korvac stands out.

that's called being a fricking hack and trash writer you fricking moron. characters DO take on a life of their own, if you create real characters with depth and are a good writer. the idea is to tell the story through them, through who the character is, not force the story and drag the character along with it.

I think this comes down to planning. If you design your plot to fit your character and vice versa, and you understand what makes your own writing tick, then you don't have to run into this. Writing more intuitively and haphazardly isn't bad necessarily but it's not the only way to do it. These things are knowable and learnable up to a point.
See the Nabokov quote right above. Do you think his characters are shallow?

      >and Alen Moore was too fricking stupid to see that people gonna like that in a hero.

I'm not reading any of this, we have a "democrat" weaponizing the judicial system so he wins an election after weaponizing intelligence agencies to defraud the first one. Rorschach ended up being proven correct, the only thing these people will ever respect is violence.

I did read it, and while there's a semi-intelligent setup most of his writing is shit. I actually like weird future slang, when it's well executed, but Moore's example in Crossed 100 is terrible. Not inscrutable, but just uncomfortable to read and unbelievable. As in, people say "brown" instead of "shit". Shit is an old, old word that's been in the English vernacular for a millennium. Later people from New York are introduced, and they speak in a comically exaggerated New York accent, which is actually kind of funny. But I think that's a different writer. He also inserts his free love fetishism, and left wing wet dream Muslims (free love, gay acceptance, basically identical to the main group except they pray sometimes). The main conceit is also kinda iffy.

His remixes are quite a bit different from the original sources. I think he goes beyond remixing, sampling, or even variations on a theme, if we're borrowing music terminology. He uses recognizable elements to make something entirely new.

    lol at OP"s post.

It will never stop amusing me that Moore's most popular character, Rorschach, was meant to be a caricature of Steve Ditko's objectavist superhero Mr.A because Moore is a communist.

His wizard-feud with Grant Morrisson's funny too.

It's also amusing how he keeps flip-flopping on whether comics are fun or not. He did deconstructions, then wanted to make the medium lighthearted again, then condemned the idea of the superhero as innately white supremacist, then told people to just write for fun and personal empowerment...

It's like watching someone's manic and depressive periods through the years.
