                >On September 13, 1987, the guard who was tasked with protecting the site did not show up for work. Taking advantage, burglars Roberto dos Santos Alves and Wagner Mota Pereira illegally entered the site. They partially disassembled the teletherapy unit and placed the source assembly – which they thought might have some scrap value – in a wheelbarrow
                >they began dismantling the equipment. That same evening, they both began to vomit due to radiation sickness. Nevertheless, they continued in their efforts.
                >On September 15, Pereira visited a local clinic, where his symptoms were diagnosed as the result of something he had eaten; he was told to return home and rest. Alves, however, continued with his efforts to dismantle the equipment and eventually freed the caesium capsule
                >On September 16, Alves succeeded in puncturing the capsule's aperture window with a screwdriver, allowing him to see a deep blue light coming from the tiny opening he had created. He inserted the screwdriver and successfully scooped out some of the glowing substance. Thinking it was perhaps a type of gunpowder, he tried to light it, but the powder would not ignite.
                >On September 18, Alves sold the items to a nearby scrapyard. That night, Devair Alves Ferreira, the owner of the scrapyard, noticed the blue glow from the punctured capsule. Thinking the capsule's contents were valuable or even supernatural, he immediately brought it into his house. Over the next three days, he invited friends and family to view the strange glowing substance

Leide das Neves Ferreira, aged 6 (6.0 Gy), was the daughter of Ivo Ferreira. When an international team arrived to treat her, she was discovered confined to an isolated room in the hospital because the staff were afraid to go near her. She gradually experienced swelling in the upper body, hair loss, kidney and lung damage, and internal bleeding. She died on October 23, 1987, of "septicemia and generalized infection" at the Marcilio Dias Navy Hospital, in Rio de Janeiro.[16] She was buried in a common cemetery in Goiânia, in a special fiberglass coffin lined with lead to prevent the spread of radiation. Despite these measures, news of her impending burial caused a riot of more than 2,000 people in the cemetery on the day of her burial, all fearing that her corpse would poison the surrounding land. Rioters tried to prevent her burial by using stones and bricks to block the cemetery roadway.[17] She was buried despite this interference.

How can anyone frick up with propane is astounding ,propane is only flammable in a mixture of 2 to 9% propane to air and being heavy is predictable to form a pocket in a low area and/or closed space.
Don't store a tank in shed and don't lift it with the valve and that's it.

for the same reason people sit on sinking ships until they're dead when the staff says to remain in their cabins. the overwhelming majority of people can only just barely be considered sapient; they need and crave direction and struggle to operate independently. when you combine this with a near-universal bias towards "everything is fine and everything will be okay" and you get results like this where moronic animals like mice and wienerroaches can outperform humans at the basics of not-being-dead.

that's a good one. It pops into my head sometimes when I'm doing something kinda dangerous and I think "I'm shaking hands with danger", the guitar riff plays in my head, and I stop. But sometimes I do stupid shit so fast I can't even catch myself. One time I touched a running end mill doing 2000RPM and I pulled my hand away as soon as I touched it and I realized wtf am I doing. A few years back I had the bright idea to drill through a small piece of aluminium pipe. To get it started, I put a lot of force on the hand drill. And because I didn't have a vice nearby, I just held the piece of metal. The drill bit slipped, and went through the tip of my thumb before I even noticed, and I yanked it back out on reflex.

Wrapped it up in a cloth bandage for a few weeks and it fixed itself, hospitals are a scam. It's a bit numb at the tip, but that's about it. Man, that was a dumb move.

Literally the first time I was using the biggest knife from the set it just slipped right through the leek I was cutting and embedded itself in my finger to the bone. Sheer fricking luck that I wasn't putting enough pressure to cut my finger in half. As it was I just bleed all over my apartment until I managed to bandage the finger tightly. Finger feels a bit tight when I bend it but is otherwise fine.

something like one of these could've been me... was desperate for a job a while back and worked at a non profit that did odd jobs for different companies and required frequent forklift use and their training consisted of reading a little booklet then taking a multiple choice test and if you got an answer wrong you just did it over again.
Worst part is they also hired mentally disabled people for most of the menial work (it was the only way they could stay profitable because they got government subsidies for it) so you'd be traveling down the poorly lit hallway (because they only wanted to pay for every other lighting fixture to be working) and you'd frequently have tards just wandering around corners, or standing in the middle of the hallway staring at you.
I remember the supervisor telling me they've had all sorts of horrible accidents with the forklift in the past and almost all of them involved some tard getting crushed. Poor guys... they don't know any better

why the frick would anyone willingly go cave spelunking? I really don’t get it. I did it a couple of times on trips I was on and it was awful. First they had you crawl through a box to make sure you weren’t too fat to fit through some spaces. I made it easily but then it’s just
    >lay flat on the ground with your arms stretched straight in front and crawl your way through
    >you’ll feel it get tight but you’ll make it
you do all that shit and it’s just fricking wet rock everywhere. there’s nothing to discover, no sense of wonder. It’s novel for maybe 10 mins and then you have to go all the way back. I really don’t get it. There’s a lot better things to do if you want a sense of adventure

I have a nice anecdote that happened to me, albeit in a smaller scale, else I wouldn't be here of course.

I used to work with liquid nitrogen a lot, and eventually lost respect.
On a friday afternoon, tired mind, just wanting to go home, I had stuff to freeze. Normally I threw it in the container and took it out by hand because Leidenfrost effect.
This day I didn't. I thought "oh I could use some protective gear for a change (????)", so I grabbed a glove. It was a cotton glove though that only protects agains regular -20C and -80C freezers, but I put my gloved hand right into the -320F liquid.
Gladly I realized my mistake right away, threw out my hand and pulled the glove off.
My fingers were WHITE. An hour later blisters formed all over the fingers and hand and it took weeks to heal and not hurt anymore.
In the beginning I was afraid it might have damaged the nerves, but it healed very well so today there is no indication whatsoever that it ever happened.
But it helped me regain my respect for liquid nitrogen.

      Anonymous

      i don't get it.
you used a glove and that's why your hand froze when without the glove it wouldn't?

he soaked a cotton glove in liquid nitrogen while he was wearing it, yeah.

Look up the Leidenfrost effect on why it's possible to stick your naked hand in liquid nitrogen

        Anonymous

It’s like having a wet oven mitt. The fibres of the glove retain the heat (or lack of heat in this scenario), extending time spent in direct contact with the heat/lack of heat.

I’d make the training as obnoxious as possible based on how many case files I had to go through, the sort of interactive PowerPoint where you can’t skip any slide and it quizzes you at the end to see if you were paying attention.

Yep, I loved making really obvious examples into drawn out quizzes.
One case where construction workers got in a fight at a site and one of them fell off (or was pushed off) a two story building. Asking what safety rules were violated and I made the correct answer that they weren’t harnessed in while fighting, lol.
Some cases were sad though, one where a scaffold wasn’t properly anchored and fell on 4 people, they were all severely injured and one guy died from his injuries, really brutal reading about his death because it was pretty drawn out and he did nothing wrong, was just in the wrong place after some moron didn’t put enough ties on a scaffold.
