A change of direction in storytelling. Like a ton of other cartoons it started as a light hearted comedy and worked up into a more lore and plot heavy show.

It's not everyone's cup of tea and I understand/respect that. Still. I enjoy this kind of stuff.

It got better, with actual character development and creative episodes. The first two seasons were just a bunch of lolsorandom stuff with zero story and mary-sue Finn

the lolrandom stuff was important for the first few seasons. It added levity to a D&D-esque show. people forget how old AT is now, when it was new cartoons were in the shitter and D&D was for queer-nerdos.

absolutely not. shit was a few years before it was mainstream, people were interested for sure but adventure time was the early days of public acceptance of nerd shit. D&D was a bridge too far for most people.

Even lord of the rings kino films were considered nerd shit when AT first started. AT and big bang theory normalized nerd shit for normies and made it acceptable to like it.

not to mention 6+ seasons of lesbian baiting until the final season when the writers dropped all nuance and turned the show in to Bubblegum and Marceline Lesbian Time featuring Finn and Jake in the background.

        >Unfortunately Finn is confirmed to appear in the spin-off.
Honestly, it feels more like they have no faith in the F&C spin-off doing well if they still need Finn (a character who they already gave a complete ending) to be around for more of their shit simply because he is one of the faces of the series.

True and I fricking hate that. Doesn't help the character is already dead as shown in together again and no I don't care if he never said how he died, the point is he's dead and his story is basically over. That kinda makes having him around even more pointless

its a big writing issue because all of the art remains (fairly) consistent. i think it was the influx of younger talent taking over the directoral/lead writing roles post-Pen Ward.

you get 24/25 year olds who are like, "I understand nerd culture and comics andall the things that make AT great!" and then they have to adhere to S&P from CN/Warner, then they realize that the show isn't just lol-iront jokes, then it just decays.

why do you think they had to actually pursue the Fiona and Cake storyline? the episode was made to tease shippers/fan artists but the crew actually wanted to write for a teen dramedy. Age up Fiona and give her lots of bOoOoYyYyYysssss to fawn over, and you can just rip of your favorite k-drama episodes.

What happened? I'm not even the shipping type anymore. I just rewatched the pilot and remembered all the magic and whimsy I felt. I like how some characters developed and lore can be fun but I love that lighthearted silly adventure too. Writingwise, is a balance even possible in a series? Or is it inevitable that magical charm will disappear once the answers to the worldbuilding surface?

I don't actually know how they get together in the end (might catch up someday), I meant that my investment in the show as a whole fizzled out somewhere around s6-7 and I haven't picked it back up since. Can't access my drawings right now, sorry, but they weren't that exciting. I wasn't like a super aggressive shipper either, it was more fluff.

A showrunner who didn't have a clear vision for the series and let the crew run wild. Also millennials being millennials and relationship drama.

Pen had a vision, it's what worked about the show in the first place. If you're talking about his successor, he also had a vision, it was just contrary to his predecessor's. Because yes, you're correct, Pen was too permissive. I understand wanting to let everyone contribute, but some ideas are just stupid. I imagine he actually was shooting down stupid ideas for the show to do as well as it did in the beginning, but the pressure got to him eventually.

Honest to god the answer is gays, women, and inexperienced brown people hired for "diversity" reasons.
Seriously, look into it. The show's lead writers were primarily Straight Whites and Asians for the first 60-70ish episodes? Back then it was pretty much just the feeling of whimsy you got from smoking weed and playing D&D with your pals for the first time in highschool. With harmless jokes, fun characters, a little adventure and violence here and there.
Then the feminists and diversity hires started worming their way in with shipping, implied gay shit, making Finn and all the men look like crybaby losers that can't get women. Focusing on the "past" and "deep lore" because homosexuals and women can't let go of the past and are obsessed with it.
Sons of Mars was the last "real" episode. There's some okay ones here and there afterwards, but the show turned to complete shite as the original writers started slipping away into "Producer" credits and the writers were inconsistent randoms brought on to compound everything into shite even further.
Really was a shame, show had a lot of potential that it just completely missed out on. Thank god for Regular Show.

Moynihan is the one who really started pushing his personal relationship bullshit onto the characters. Sugar just wanted to do drama bait. She's a much bigger target because her face is out there more, but Moynihan is a big reason the show became about navel gazing and subverting expectations
