I am going third rail here and say men will watch an action movie, even if its protag is a woman, if they're interested and it looks good. Women will go see an action movie with their male partner if a guy is in it but not a woman. If nobody's noticed, female protags in general outside of Barbie haven't exactly been selling tickets.

If 60% of men watch male led action movies, and only 20% watch female led action movies, that statement holds true, even if the gap between women watching male led and female led action movies is greater. And the gap probably isnt, because most women dont like action movies in general, unless they have some strong romance subplot.

Male-led action movies main audience is also men. Women just dont enjoy violence as much as men.

Aight, another example: Atomic Blonde (2017)
            >CinemaScore shows 52% males and 48% women turning out for Atomic Blonde, with its best grades among young and middle-age folk with 18-24 (12%) and 25-34 (19%) giving the movie a B+.

Get this: exceptions do nothing but justify the rule. If 1 female action movie succeeds and literally 15 or so flop, that means these movies clearly do not sell tickets and do not have an audience because even the men who do go watch them at the theaters are a dwindling fringe.
As for Atomic Blonde, a very important detail is that the mc is feminine: this, along w/ Ana de Armas' acclaimed sexy Paloma in NTTD is an essential aspect bc the public does not want grimy/dykeish/trudging female characters.

Atomic Blonde did have a more sensual, feminine approach and it did well enough at the box office (30 mil budget/100 mil box office) compared to the utter box office disasters of movies which uglify women such as Furiosa,

It's yet another evidence that "strong" action heroines don't sell tickets because neither men nor women care for these movies. Hollywood was desperately hoping that Furiosa would do at least okayish numbers but the fact that it flopped signals a very serious crisis the American movie industry is already trying to tackle before it becomes even more irrelevant.

Alien and Terminator were always copes. Fat unfit men don't want to see female lead action movies due to deep insecurity of their own wasted potential. Any normal well adjusted person can enjoy a an action movie with a woman and not be bothered as it's just a movie and suspension of disbelief is required for any movie. John Wick can't kill 100 people with gunfu anymore than Anna Taylor Joy can. Fact is mentally and physically everyone was in a better place in the 80's and were more accepting.
