>On August 5, 1987, while driving a rented car outside Tempo, Northern Ireland, Broderick crossed into the wrong lane and collided head-on with another car. The driver, Anna Gallagher, 28, and her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63, were both killed instantly. He was vacationing with Jennifer Grey, whom he had begun dating during the filming of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He suffered a fractured leg and ribs, a concussion, and a collapsed lung. Grey's injuries included severe whiplash, which later required surgery to avoid paralysis. Broderick told police he had no recollection of the crash and did not know why he had been in the wrong lane: "What I first remember is waking up in the hospital, with a very strange feeling going on in my leg." He was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and faced up to five years in prison, but was convicted of the lesser charge of careless driving and fined £100 (US$175).

The victims' family called the verdict "a travesty of justice". The victims' brother/son, Martin Doherty, later forgave Broderick amid plans to meet him in 2003. In February 2012, when Broderick was featured in a multi-million-dollar Honda commercial that aired during the Super Bowl, Doherty said the meeting had still not taken place and that Broderick "wasn't the greatest choice of drivers, knowing his past"

I don't see the problem. Yes it's a tragedy but it also was just an accident. I don't believe in punishing people for honest mistakes.

Nah, you shouldn't have to show contrition or apologize for a mistake. Shit happens. Is he an butthole for not being sorry? Sure, but being an butthole isn't a punishable offense either.

I feel like the lesser charge is more appropriate considering he was a tourist in Ireland and I believe they drive on the left? The other charge seems to imply Broderick was purposefully breaking the road rules, whereas I feel it’s more akin to a kid who just got his learners permit merging onto the highway incorrectly or something.

Having driven in the UK whilst being wholly unfamiliar with RHD cars, I can say with almost complete certainty that he had a momentary lapse of judgement where the muscle memory for driving in the US took over and he turned into the wrong lane. It happened to me, I turned right (oncoming traffic lane) onto a divided highway, and thank God there was nobody on the road when I did it.

        Anonymous

oh thank god, it was just a momentary lapse of judgement. That makes it okay that he killed two people.

          Anonymous

It doesn't make it "okay", but it also means it wasn't a crime. The actual investigation couldn't find any hard evidence of wrongdoing, therefore he is free to go. Innocent until proven guilty.

Nta, but if I was wealthy and I killed somebody even if it was by accident and I'm legally not responsible, I'd still make a nice gesture to the family like pay their mortgage off on their house or pay for their kid to go to college or something. And I sure as shit would never forget it and accept money to be on a fricking car commercial, no matter how fricking desperate I was for some cash.

i highly recommend playing driver: san francisco for those who want to experience the matthew broderick experience. spoilers: your in a coma, so the games bizarre gameplay makes sense in context. you are an ethereal spirit who can just glide across the map, and hop into any car and take direct control, this is complete with varying degrees of uncomfortable dialogue, as you peel off and speed into incoming traffic at 100 mph, while your worried passenger gets increasingly agitated by your actions (such scenarios are a teen on her first driving test, a grandmother getting into her later years, and various other settings)

and since an example mission is to stop a semi truck from reaching a destination, you hit them head on at top speed, definitely murdering all the occupants of the car. then you glide to the next car. and repeat.

dont pirate the switch version, its literally a different game. its kinda hard to get the other console or pc edition, its no longer for sale.

What you need to understand is that *some* people in society are above the law. The rich, royalty, politicians, etc etc. The law isn't so much applied to them equally as it is a tool used by other elites to eliminate them from competition.

Jews occupy this role in American society, moreso when they are rich, famous israelites.
