Oda had a last word regarding the hiring of the main characters cast. He followed his ideas regarding the IRL ethnicities of his core crew (Luffy/Brazilian, Zoro/japanese, Usopp/"african", Nami and Sanji/caucasian)

it's going to be fricking trash. there's no way to do one piece's absurd goofy character designs and powers with live action. it'll be the worst greenscreen bullshit ever, there's some stuff you just CAN'T do irl.

The issue with adapting OP is that it's simply too long. I don't mean that "it's so long people will lose interest in it" but it's so long any small change you make to the story in order to fit within the format of a tv show risks cascading into bigger and bigger problems later. And everytime you change anything people yell at you for disrespecting the source material.

And that's not even taking into account the inherent goofiness of the setting.

Even with Cowboy Bebop, who had a relatively small amount of content to adapt and an artstyle that favored realism, they managed to muck it up. One Piece is one of the worst manga they could try to adapt, it just need so much budget to be decent and not feel cheap.

Part of me is thinking the only reason this project is happening at all is because some Netflix producer just skimmed through volume 1 and thought it was a relatively grounded story about dudes in boats, so he greenlit the project and is now too embarrassed to pull the plug.

Apparently israelites have been approaching Oda to adapt his series for the past two decades. Every time, he said no.

And now we suddenly get him endorsing opening borders for the Japan equivalent in the story world, AND an explicit endorsement of trannies in the same story arc, along with a live action adaption. When you see these patterns, when you see globohomosexual make three massive victories in terms of using One Piece as their propaganda platform, you really have to wonder. Is he getting too old to protect the integrity of his creative work under the immense globohomosexual pressure? Is he finally selling out for an unimaginable amount of money? What shit do the israelites have on Oda? Did they convince him to diddle kids on camera?

        >Is he finally selling out for an unimaginable amount of money?
He's cashing out. OP sales have fricking plummeted in the past few years and fricking nobody likes the current direction apart from the diehard cultists who would eat Oda's shit and ask for more.

I don't think he has veto powers about what can be adapted. All the movies he stands by it saying it's great even if it's crap where all he personally did was give costumes. He praised the anime recently when Wano started, then not 5 episodes into it, the quality once again plummeted to 1chp:1ep. When it comes to external media (tv, game, movie, merch) he does as all nips do, and smiles saying good things. Wano went full DBZ with visible auras for stuff that didn't need it, wet farts with extended fight scenes with characters who got one shot etc.

I would assume the licensing rights are completely out of his hands considering when the anime first started his work was still an extremely middle of the road battle series and was still in the middle of alabasta, so by the time it had gone into pre-production it was even earlier in the series, a guy with one 'okay' serialization and barely 100 chapters under his belt doesn't have clout when making a licensing/adaptation deal, maybe it's been renegotiated in the last 20 years? Doubt it since nips are bigger israelites than israelites.

      >they managed to muck it up
They mucked it up as soon as the dyke actress shot off her mouth and went all feminist (and no doubt she had input in making the sexy character as unsexy as possible). Hopefully, HOPEFULLY, the actors and actresses here will know to keep their mouths fricking shut.

We've been traumatised too much by failed love action adaptions. The casting is unusually top notch but I fear they're gambling on too many young undeveloped actors for it to work. Of course, it's best to watch it before passing judgement. Myself I am quietly hyped about it too but I actually have dignity about it.

I mean the main appeal of One Piece is that almost none of it is realistic, I don't know what these morons at netflix were thinking when they chose this instead of something like black lagoon or monster or whatever

NO LIVE ACTION ANIME ADAPTATION WILL EVER BE GOOD.

We've already had too many examples of western anime adaptations like Dragonball, Death Note, Ghost In The Shell, Cowboy Bebop, and Fist of the North Star, and all of them were FRICKING SHIT.

I am NEVER trusting Hollywood, Netflix, or anyone to touch an anime or manga IP because I know they're going to frick it up one way or another and turn it into uncreative, uninspired bullshit.

    FRICK THIS SHIT.

I would love to get into One piece but I am intimidated by its size ( Har har ) Is it that absurdly huge? or does it go pretty quick?

      Anonymous

It's huge, but if you are willing to invest time on it is easily the GOAT longtime shounen with an A tier worldbuilding
But follow the Manga, not the Anime. The anime, especially in the last decade it's dragged out to the extreme. I'm talking about making a single episode about 1/2 of a single manga chapter, while the ideal standard would been two chapters every episode. Some arcs are also atrociously drawned

        Anonymous

Thanks , I do like the worldbuilding aspect of O.P. so I most def will check it out.

          Anonymous

Yea the worldbuilding is insane and blow out pretty much any other mainstream manga. It's start small scale tho, and its slowly expanded arc after arc
The manga also often have "chapter covers mini-arcs": for a certain number of chapters, each chapter cove tells a short story regarding characters that appeared in previous arcs in little (canonical) adventures that are happening at the same time of the events of the chapter involving the main crew. It's a wonderfull way to expand the worldbuilding without diverging from the main plot
Litterally canon characters that officially met the main crew in a specific points were actually first introduced in such mini sides stories years before

Just another cover of the same mini-arc to show how the plot for the mini arcs develop cover after cover
I choose a rather famous cover mini-arc that had yet to influence the main plot. So no spoilers for ya

I got somewhat into it the past year because there's a 24/7 one piece channel on a firestick app I use that just runs through the first 350 episodes or so then loops back to ep 1
The first 40some episodes or so are very comfy so maybe try those out and see if you want to continue from there

The main problem of One Piece is the bad habit of Toei to avoid making 100% filler sagas to buy time (annoying while airing, but good for speedwatchs because you can skip them)
Instead, when at risk of reaching the manga, they start adapt 1/2 of a chapter per episode, adding a lot of filler stuff within canon stuff to drag out (like a single punch that it's istant in the manga being charged in the anime version for 30+ seconds like it's a fricking Kamehameha). With this strategy, speewatcher have to watch pretty much every single episode to be on par

There is a reason is called the "King of Mangas" not the "King of Animes"

          Anonymous

The manga is way better, especially when the anime starts dragging itself out to avoid catching up, but what you can do is first read the manga and then watch only the highlight moments and other favorite scenes.

      Anonymous

Don't read the spoilers if you care.

The macro story (overarching mysteries) is slow as balls, like decades. There's plot threads hanging that we might soon™ learn about since Luffy got a power up relating to fruits, so maybe in the next 2~ years we will finally learn what the ever loving frick fruits actually are, a core power system just werks for 25 years with the caveat that things are bluntly not quite what they seem and it's just not addressed. Recent outcry about Luffy's fruit is weird to me. Way back in alabasta we're introduced to a gun that ATE the dog fruit. A 'brand new' technology and something shocking new to both the lore (rules as we the audience understand are now thrown into question) and characters in the world who also thought that giving inanimate objects powers was impossible nonsense. So why be mad when Luffy's fruit isn't what was advertised. The names/classifications of fruits is made up stuff the OP world just assigned.

The local story can be faster early on, dealing with the local island and it's problem. Later on it can get very, very slow on a weekly read because you'll feel like noting happens, minor scuffle of no import and some running. Way better to read post-TS as finished arcs/islands. The sheer number of side fights escalates as dozens of per island side characters need their individual exploration, fights and interactions.

It's also kind of SJW friendly isn't it? homosexualory is accepted, both as a state of being and as a joke. Racism/classism/slavery/oppression/genocide/corruption is pretty core to the story. So is personal freedom, to a degree. Feels pro-monarchy at times.

I can't do One Piece. I'm like 30 episodes in. I thought it would be a fun adventure show. When there is adventure it's fun. But then the show will be 10 episodes in a row in one single location, a tiny location, like a single beach, or the deck of a floating restaurant, and it's like frick man. You guys are on boats.

Maybe I just need to watch more. But I really can't stand the pacing. Like fricking go on an adventure already.

It's a story intended to stretch to 2000 chapters.
Of course it is slow paced, and of course One Pissers are going to tell you, "keep reading bro, it gets good by chapter/episode 300".
Don't do it. It is always the same malarky.

One Piece is too weird to adapt to live-action. I don't even know how the FRICK you would adapt half the shit in One Piece into live-action without it being weird as shit.

Plus it's from Netflix + the same producers behind the Cowboy Bebop adaptation that everyone recognized as shit. That + the fact that One Piece would be exponentially harder to get right in live-action makes me really not have high hopes.
