Because it didn't have the potential to be anything more than a short film. Low relevance meant low funding, and therefore no attention by Dutch companies that were capable of picking it up. When considering that he also had a job while working on the show, burnout naturally followed as the years passed by.
I think it has something to do with the fact that series creator massa grew to hate the show's growing non-Dutch fan base and subsequently canceled Ongezellig out of spite.
I have never watched this but seeing the “””fans””” it garnered that single handedly ruined its reputation and made it the face of the worst kind of cancer is a horror story all on its own, I hope to god it never happens to me
