Yes, basically. The premise of the show is that for years the main character did money laundering for a cartel, then shit went sideways and he wanted to get out of it. The story plays out from there.

I started watching it "during Covid" and I found it to be a cheap ripoff of Breaking Bad. It was just barely intriguing enough to keep watching even though there were a lot of aspects that sucked - way too many shock value moments, subtle israeli propaganda, generally lazy writing,etc. Then maybe a year or 2 ago when the first season "after covid" was released I tried to get back into it and I had to turn it off after about a minute. It was just so dumb and I didn't care about any of the characters.
It's much, much better than snooze fest breaking bad.

if you watch it as a character study of Marty it's somewhat entertaining. he's a great character with an unparalleled ability to compartmentalize his life

The first season was very good. It gradually declined in quality as they tried way too hard to be over the top. I stopped taking it seriously after Omar Navarro got arrested

I really think they missed something in relation to pic related. Wouldn't it have been hilarious if the show recreated an episode of House Hunters with the family? That kind of stuff would have been more memorable and less depressing than the persistent air of melancholy the show refused to uncling from. Like, frick, if you want them to be this facade of a perfect family you need to go all the way and present them as such.

jason bateman is a great actor in the majority of his roles, his comedic edge fills out this character.
the anticipation for the next cartel leaders phonecall demand that was increasingly ridiculous was what made the show. Lot of antagonists were poorly utilized like the old hilbilly husband/wife, the gilf banging was a bit much and ruth's bro sucked anyways. The private detective in the final season was a really cool dude and i liked that he was the problem, Wendy's brother was godawful at every angle terrible arc otherwise i found the boat casino enjoyable
the characters they brought out of the woodwork toward the end after the main cartel leader was grasping for straws, cartel son and then cartel wife/mom those were bad choices should've went a different direction, kinda got whiplash from marty turning the government against the cartel and coming out okay, kinda shit dramatically flipped in 15 minutes of an episode

I struggled to watch the last few seasons. First season was best, rest was pretty meh. This isn't breaking bad but I can see why people think it is. Only thing I really like about it is the setting. It's not shot in Missouri, sadly.

First season was great, then it fell off a cliff. Big cliffhanger of Season 1 basically getting dropped with no consequence 5 minutes into season 2 was the first big red flag for the show.
