Are you talking only the movies, or including the books?
    >Dense lore
The movies are easy to follow and the hardcore lore is mostly just Easter eggs for hardcore fans. The Hobbit book is one of the most accessible I can think of.
    >not as well seen or watched
The LOTR were critical darlings that won a boatload of Oscars, are popular with normies, and made a ton of money. I'm sure the Harry Potter movies have more viewership overall, but they also have double the movies to work with

If you want it to make money then yes. There are tons of fantasy books with various degrees of lore complexity and average viewer does not have time or desire to delve in this shit unless you make it a series like got. So if you’re pedowood producer that want to make some dough on fantasy it makes perfect sense to pick easily digestible setting.

Idk where’s the hate. Base material is not ideal but considering it was written by middle age housewife without previous writing experience it holds its own pretty decent. Also she made grrm seethe so that a plus in my book. Movies on other hand are full of plot holes especially latter ones, which can be understood only by book readers, which is explained by limited screentime. They could’ve gone with two part movies at least for 6th book and arguably for 5th but it would be a chore to watch. Overall it’s stupid to compare it to lotr which is your classic epic Conan style fantasy while hp is coming out of age drama sprinkled with magical flavour.

It had 2 and they weren't good. It's getting a tv series, the downside is that they made Anabeth black so her and Percy will now be an interacial couple.....

The Lord of the Rings are some of the most beloved films of all time.

let me guess you saw lotr when you were 12 so you're oblivious to its flaws.

fellowship of the ring is a masterpiece, two towers is okay at best, return of the king borders on bad

They're all masterpieces compared to the Potter films. Not even a fan of either of these franchises.

Maybe not as much today, but LOTR were huge events as movies, way bigger than gayass Harry Potter. Potter franchise is dull as frick too. The best entries are directed by Chris Columbus, ffs.

It's the perfect story/concept for its era.
It combines elements of star wars with Lord of the Rings stylings
    Star wars:
    >there's an unbeknownst to you entire secret world of magic that you have, also unbeknownst t you, been grandfathered into
    >there is a dark and light side of this magical element, be careful
    >you are the chosen one
    LOTR
    >obvious similarities

The MC has glasses and an attitude to match John Lennon.

You've got (also similar to star wars) elements of WWII thrown in, but with a greater emphasis on genocide and civil rights issues.

The fantastic escapism, balanced with allusions to current day politics and civil issues, set against a familiar hero's journey saga with familiar archetypes.
It makes the utmost sense J.K. Rowling would write a straight mystery detective novel after HP concluded; each Harry Potter story/book/movie is basically a mystery story.

All elements combined it's no surprise what appeal this series continues to have. I personally think it's clunky janky turn of the millennium kino, what with cast, characterization, and setting discrepancies throughout, uncanny CGI, etcetera, but warts and all I think the foundation was really solid and that's how and why it made billions of dollars.

Do you really need a franchise to enjoy a genre?
