Like I get why they don't use Pepé Le Pew anymore, but why not use Penelope anymore? She's one of the few original girl Loony Tunes characters. Just give her her own shorts.

For example keep how she always gets the white stripe on her back but instead of Pepé thinking she's a skunk have everybody else in the scene think she's a skunk. Have the comedy come from her desperately trying to get the white stripe off as everybody around her tries to pummel her to get the skunk to go away. Or maybe introduce a new animal control character who really hates skunks and is constantly trying to catch Penelope.

    Like it writes itself.

You know, while I do want pepe to return, I do think having penelope do her own solo shorts could be fun and give her more to work with. If pepe returns, I think it would be good if they also did more shorts of him without penelope for the same reason.

Tbf I feel like Pepé's biggest issue was that his shorts were pretty boring, at least in my opinion. Like I remember aleven as a young kid loving Loony Tunes but groan when Pepé Le Pew came on. Like the shorts were fine but for me all of the comedy came from Penelope freaking out trying to get away from him.

So for me I would rather Penelope get her own shorts instead of pring back Pepé. Not saying he can't be adapted to work today but in my eyes, why bother besides the fact that he's a legacy character. He was just a tool for Penelope's comedy.

but what would she do? What would she even be, at that point? "the cat who gets chased around by Pepe Le Pew" was her entire existence, even the Granny from the Sylvester and Tweety shorts had more discernible character. I think the only thing Penelope EVER did outside of that was 'Carrot-blanca', and that was just because Lola didn't exist yet. How do you take a character that existed for decades without even having a name and reinvent them? Is it even worth it at that point? I'm not even trying to be mean or nothing I'm actually really puzzled here.

Nah your good. The way I see it we have two choices. Either they save using Penelope for Pepé Le Pew if they ever decide to risk making new shorts for him or take the risk and branch Penelope out and try and make her her own character. And quite frankly in today's media climate I don't see Pepé Le Pew ever getting his own shorts ever again (at least not without drastically changing his character in which case why bother).

Plus like I explained above, at least to me all of the comedy in those original shorts came from Penelope trying to get the frick away from Le Pew. So I think it could be worth it to at least try to make Penelope a more proper Looney Tunes character. Like she is a legacy character. Also Looney Tunes barely has any (major) female toons, which is why they always have to create a new character basically when ever a new cartoon is made. Like there's basically just Granny and Lola if you count her.

She's already a nice, reserved girl who can get really anxious in some ways and can get very mischievous and confident in others
You have a decent bit to work there

Amen! Like I'm glad OP made this post because it made mily mind swim with ideas. God thinking about it Penelope is such a mound of clay. Ready to be shaped into something great.

Kinda hard to do that when basically her entire character is tied to and buit upon to Pepe and trying to get away from him. She'd pretty much need a total personality overhaul, which can work, but I don't see them putting in the effort

I'd kind of like to see something where it starts off like a classic Pepe short- Penelope enters, white paint, etc- except he just doesn't show up, and she spends the rest of it anticipating his arrival but it just never happens. Maybe go in a completely different direction and make something kind of eerie and anxiety-inducing, have it feel like those scenes in Mulholland Drive where the camera quietly lingers on a door or a hallway and you expect something frightening to appear, but it doesn't. Maybe go full Twilight Zone with her seeming to be the only living soul anywhere around, having her go from searching for Pepe to searching for... anybody. I don't really know if 'strangely ominous existential cat short' is something anyone working for WB would be willing to animate, but I think something like this has potential to be intriguing as long as they keep it subtle and don't stray into lame creepypasta-ish territory with it

That's definitely a good way to go with it.

I can picture this- the short proceeding as normal right up until she realizes that she's supposed to be chased by... someone. Except it's just not happening. That's when the music abruptly stops as the visual perspective (or whatever you'd call 'camera angle' for a cartoon) suddenly shifts to something less 'golden age cartoon' and more contemporary, as she anxiously looks around the building
          >where is he?
so she exits the building and goes out on to the street. There is no sound outside except for the wind. There's nothing out there- no cars, buses, pedestrians. She could hear birds chirping in the tree outside just a bit ago- yet when she looks up, there's nothing up there.
          >where is anyone?

Nah, they should flip the script and have Penelope fall in love with hopelessly impossible paramours.
      >Penelope falls in love with a lion at the zoo.
      >Penelope falls in love with a Cats the Musical performer
      >Penelope falls in love with a Detroit Tigers football player

It depends on whether you're doing an animal or anthro plot. In the first one she's doing typical cat things and being shoo'd away for being seen as a skunk. In the second one her being a "skunk" translates into a social allegory, where she's disregarded, denied services etc. for being perceived as a skunk.
That social/anthro patg can actually provide a pathway to bringing back Pepe, who can be a rebellious seducer type trying to convince her to embrace skunkiness and generally being a menace to society

If these threads are anything to go by, you could just bring Pepe back and have him get chased around by lustful closet-case anons. Seems like there's no short supply of those.
