Peter Jackson Says Amazons Lord of the Rings TV Series Ghosted Him

OH NO NO NO NO NO NO

>“They asked me if I wanted to be involved — [writer-producer Fran Walsh] and I — and I said, ‘That’s an impossible question to answer without seeing a script,'” Jackson recalled to Scott Feinberg on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. “So they said, ‘As soon as we get the first couple scripts, we’ll send them to you.’ And the scripts never showed up. That’s the last thing I heard, which is fine. No complaints at all.”

>Amazon Studios responded to Jackson’s comments with the following statement: “In pursuing the rights for our show, we were obligated to keep the series distinct and separate from the films. We have the utmost respect for Peter Jackson and The Lord of The Rings films and are thrilled that he is looking forward to watching The Rings of Power.”

    >Sources close to the project describe a complicated and delicate backstory as author J.R.R. Tolkien’s estate was against having Jackson on board. This shouldn’t be surprising, as the estate had no involvement with his films and Christopher Tolkien has previously slammed the trilogy in the press as “eviscerating” his father’s books, claiming they turned his novels into action movies for young people that lack “beauty and seriousness.” But the estate is involved with the series — Amazon paid the estate an astounding $250 million for the rights to make the show.

        >[Christopher Tolkien says he has] a "vociferous condemnation" of the 1979 animated film version ("...I regard it with abhorrence, as a really unbelievable travesty of my father's work..."), speculating on the effect of the films on his father's legacy ("...I heartily wish that the films of The Lord of the Rings were not being made, & I fear their advent – but even more, perhaps, the associated imbecilities of hideous toys & special breakfast-cereals... it seems impossible to guess what effect the films with ultimately have...")

        >From a letter dated 31 January, 1979: As regards the question of the film: I have not seen it and do not intend to, but I have seen a book with pictures taken from the film. I will not deafen you with vociferous condemnation and say no more than that I regard it with abhorrence, as a wholly unbelievable travesty of my father's work and a denial of the entire imaginative and aesthetic outlook. I do not wish to be associated with the film in any way that I can help; nor would United Artists want my assistance if they knew my feelings!

Christopher Tolkien spent years shit talking the 1979 movie and then it turned out he'd never even see it. There's a pretty good chance he'd never even seen the full Jackson trilogy, because despite the flaws it's still the best adaptation of a fantasy book by a long shot. Christopher just hated any adaptation by default because he doesn't believe LotR should ever exit the book form, he just thinks it automatically renders everything soulless. Kind of like how autists here love things when they're obscure but complain that they're "ruined" once they go mainstream.

Ironically, his father who actually wrote the books was more receptive towards adaptations and actively gave input to the 1979. He even suggested they cut out Helm's Deep completely because he feared it could get complicated to adapt it to a screen properly.

People who want to hate shit on principle will always hate it no matter what. Christopher Tolkien hated putting his father's work on a screen because he thought it'll be nothing but fanfiction action scenes, he hates the idea on principle. So he'd probably watch 3 hours of Fellowship, he'd ignore how beautifully it conveys the slow pace and the pre-raphaelite energy of the books, his brain would just replay the scenes with Arwen meeting the hobbits or hobbits jumping onto the raft and he'd seethe about non book readers saying it's amazing, and he'd be convinced that's all the movie does.

If you think this is cope, just look at this place. If a good 2 hour movie comes out and it has 1 minute of a woman or Black person on screen, Cinemaphile will seethe about it because to them it's a feminist movie - the rest of the movie would blank out completely in their brains.

Christopher really was a pissy c**t who lived of the his father's success. You can complain about goofy scenes in the Jackson films, sure, but most people don't look back and remember Legolas surfing on elephants for 10 seconds. What people do remember are beautiful moments of heroism and friendship that actually did carry that old Germanic-Catholic essence that Tolkien infused in his work.

Just look at how many young men who feel the world is descending into corruption and ugliness but look back at those films with a great fondness and even seek out religion as a remedy to the ills of the modern day. Could Jackson's films even have had a more perfect impact than that?

This. >Christopher Tolkien has previously slammed the trilogy in the press as “eviscerating” his father’s books
        huh?

You are not understanding the key difference here.
The movies took an existing story/novel and changed it to make action movies
ROP is taking notes in a history book and creating a story out of it

The issue the Tolkien's have with the movies is the LOTR story being misrepresented to a mass audience. ROP is just it's own thing entirely, it doesn't directly impact any novel because there isn't one for the 2nd age

          Anonymous

There is no difference when Amazon mutilates what little that was established to create the Frankenstein of their own fanfiction that has nothing in common with anything Tolkien wrote other than the most superficial bits and pieces.

I'm not sure what you are misunderstanding here
The events of the 2nd age are documented as events in a history book. It's called the Tale of Years.

There is no novel that covers the 2nd age

How do you think movies like Braveheart, Gladiator or any other historical film gets made? They take some parts of RL history and then add mostly oc (or fanfic as you like to reduce it to) to tell a cohesive narrative.
It's practically the same process here just using the history notes of middle earth as the basis for the story

it will be mostly amateurish amazonian homebrew, granted, but how is it 'its own thing entirely'? it's set in the world tolkien created, with characters and events he created, don't try to convince anyone they won't be misrepresented. and adding characters that tolkien did not create like 'activist easterlings' absolutely misrepresents his world.

That was 100% the studio demanding to have another trilogy out of a book that at best only had enough for two movies and Jackson only did it because Del Toro left the project and felt obligated when asked. He did not enjoy the experience.

Despite the movies being faithful in feel and seeming, the true irony that most overlook is that Tolkien wouldn't have particularly liked Jackson's movies, probably, as he was a perfectionist freak to levels that just don't bode well with cinematic production(s), so you can only imagine how much he'd *haaaaate* Amazon's golden turd on a plate.

The LotR video games + Jackson's Hobbit totally oversaturated Tolkien's works anyway. Parents are showing their kids the Hobbit before Lord of the Rings. Why? Because the general human is a consumer dumbass and cannot weigh things for what they are. The Rings of Power will be more culturally iconic than the Hobbit OR The Lord of the Rings -- Amazon is already shoving the RoP on LotR book covers. The culture war (rape) on the past is real. The sheer hubris is very real. It is tangible.

          >Do you really think Amazon didn't insist or have a say on it
I mean Harper Collins was part of the deal made originally with the Tolkien Estate. What I imagine is that the negotiation would have been along the lines of Amazon getting to advertise on the front of the books since Harper Collins would profit from the increase in books sales. But either way Harper Collins would have been the ones to agree to this because they are the publishers.

Still interesting how New Line Cinema have always been part of this show's production though, im still not sure their exact involvement.

      >Despite the movies being faithful in feel
That's the thing though; they weren't really. Jackson's films only stand out to people to whom they were their first experience of Tolkien's world; they watch the trilogy 20 times then listen to the audiobook once and insist the former is a good adaptation of the latter.

I don't think Tolkien would have liked Jackson's trilogy on the grounds that it completely perverted so many things that were of huge importance to Tolkien in favour of things that weren't. No poetry, no history, constant character assassination; all for television melodrama and juvenile violence.

The sublime mountains are where it begins and ends. The infertile interior of New Zealand was otherwise completely wrong for Middle-Earth. Rohan was reduced to a lifeless steppe.

Frodo was a fat old whiner in the books, in the movies he’s a young man braving the world in the prime of his life

It’s not the same story, so it’s fine and works well

He's an adult character with depth and intelligence, and absolutely in his prime. In the films he's a dimwitted child.

Yeah, nah, I see your point with how SW prequels have been ‘redeemed’ by zoomers, but who’s going to show their kids this?
Will be boring as shit to a kid, and parents aren’t going to find it an acceptable replacement for bedtime stories.
Why would it be redeemed and not forgotten like 95% of tv media?

The average consumer gobbles up whatever is currently being highlighted by the media. It doesn't matter how good or bad it is.

            >Will be boring as shit to a kid
The original trilogy is rather slow and boring to a kid.

OT had the advantage of being somewhat faithful to the source material though, and plenty of kids read that.
This doesn’t even have that benefit, it’s hack writers who never even published a fantasy book trying to make lightning strike where Tolkien did.

they haven't even written a successful script yet. their only experience in television and film is that they wrote a first draft for star trek beyond which got thrown in the trash.

I might be mad, possibly, if we were talking LoTR director.
But we saw what he did with creative freedom in the Hobbit I II III IV V VI so frick Jackson.
Maybe the clash of two varieties of shit would have cancelled out the worst and raised the best in RoPe, but hardly a gamble I’m interested in.

Tolkien's son, his fricking SON, had every right to hate any conceivable adaption of his father's work.

He was a fan like no other. One cannot understand what it must have been like to grow up in that fictional world.

Frick you, he had no right to hate anything. He had no problem whoring out his father's work for millions of dollars.

People who shit on Christopher can be ignored. They are content consumers. They want more Content from their Favourite Franchise or else they'll scream.

      >Don't you want more Content from Franchise??
      >Don't you want more Fans for Franchise??
      No.

i wouldn't shit on christopher, but i disagree with him about the films and they weren't my first experience of the lord of the rings. if you look at them as just films among films they are peak soul

Christopher's opinions were notoriously wrong on everything though. He was a stupid boomer that was scared on new media. He even shat on Blind Guardian for making songs about Lord of the Rings even though as far as metal goes, Blind Guardian is pretty restrained and respectful.

It must be nice spending a lifetime doing absolutely nothing noteworthy except reaping the monetary benefits of your father's work and gatekeeping it for even more money with every opportunity.

Wasn't there some blurb about the creators of the show trying to make the show fit the world now and not really caring about the original much?

    Sage

Jackson's production was redeemed in chief part by the manifestation of the characters Tolkien created. Everybody enjoyed them because he peppered it with enough action scenes to keep the attention of contemptuous normies, and won many of them over to the deeper message as a result.

There could never have been a perfect interpretation, and we should be grateful that the team PJ put together was so passionate about the quality of the film.

Amazon has shown none of that. Only pellets to feed the terminal consoomer. Only sneering hatred to those who were invigorated by the light that shines through this tale.

Also this project is not normie friendly like LotR was. It was an action movie story about a capture the flag game with everyone trying to grab the Ring or destroy it. It will feel completely different to have a show about Elvish politics and human kings being corrupted.
