Are you sure you're not just a Goggins simp? I mean, it's ok if you are. But I've never heard anyone pretend like VP is better than Eastbound. It's inferior in almost every sense.

        Anonymous

Goggins is a big part of why i prefer it so you can say is because of that... BUT the comedy just felt less over the place, Kenny Powers feels like a cartoon for the most part, got kind of relieved when he "died" at season 3 because this homie doesn't deserve shit and it was hilarious when he went boom, but last season was not bad either, i don't hate the show, i just think VP is more tightly put together and with a better sense of direction, you can see how Danny learned from E n D

        (in MY opinion of course)

          Anonymous

          >Kenny Powers feels like a cartoon for the most part
          yes. That's mostly the point.

Not every TV show or film has to strike a chord with you, you know? Lots of people love the cartoonish hilarity of E&D. Like me. I also thought VP was great though. Different shows, different tones, different ways of making you laugh.... But it's just autism if you think everything has to be for you. Taste is subjective, so it's impossible.

            Anonymous

my point is that the show tries to make him be more than just that, since they do show him vulnerable and soft at times you know, but it doesn't do that aspect too great

Gemstones is better than VP in every way. Vice Principles was them trying to figure out how not to make it Kenny Powers 2.0 but not being able to do an ensemble cast yet. Gemstones is when the real misbehavin' starts.

        Anonymous

Gemstones has the better overall cast and Gamby is slightly less moronic in comparison to KP, he has more of a conscience too

          Anonymous

          >and Gamby is slightly less moronic in comparison to KP
Gamby is like trying to make an entire series out of the brief few episodes of Eastbound where Kenny pretends to be a normie working at a car rental. He's K.P., but all the funny shit gets said under his breath or not at all. VP needed to be an ensemble cast. It could have been great. I love this cute derpy hot b***h. But the show never really found its footing in my opinion.

            Anonymous

yeah, we can agree to disagree because if anything i find her to be the reason why Gamby comes off like a such a wuss in some episodes, the whole trip episode for example, it was good but made him a complete gay

he does have his moments overall though, he's way way nicer than KP, so is not exactly the same same

          Anonymous

It seems like McBride’s characters successively have more of a conscience and softer side with each iteration. Like you said Gamby is a more mature guy than KP, and Eli Gemstone is definitely even more grounded than both. Both later characters are more family-men. Maybe it has to do with McBride getting older.

            Anonymous

that is true but my issue with Kenny Powers is that he also tried to give him a soft side but kind of failed at it since he's Kenny (fricking) Powers

You don't think mcbride contributes to the white trash redneck POV that characterizes all of these shows at all? Pretty sure that self-produced karate movie he did that was basically napoleon dynamite without the punch pulling was all him, so it seems highly unlikely.

                Anonymous

                >You don't think mcbride contributes to the white trash redneck POV

McBride IS "white trash redneck". He grew up in Fredericksburg, Virginia, which was a fairly rural town in his day and had a lot of "white trash rednecks" living in the area.

Rather see him play the rednecks than the soiboy urbanites as at least the rednecks aren't giant pussies and don't take shit from people the way the beta eunuchs always do.

                Anonymous

What I mean is, why are you discounting his credibility as a writer or director? As far as i'm concerned, east bound vice/principals/gemstones has a very idiosyncratic sense of humnor that he basically invented. Idk if it was you but the post I was replying to felt like it was trying to discredit the guy who came up with and embodies this very specific kind of comedy, which I think is as absurd as saying gene wilder had nothing to do with the comedic sensibility of blazing saddles/willy wonka/stir crazy whatever movie you want to name

                Anonymous

Do you have a reason for this theory?

Not discounting your opinion, just wondering if there is something produced by hill with this 'durdy souf' sensibility not involving danny mcbride that led you to the conclusion he's the originator of it, or if you have some other reason for ascribing it to him?

                Anonymous

                combination of this movie

all of those are jody hill, danny even plays a similar guy with judd apatow, I'm doubtful he does much
I swear if jody could have got the budget to do this with danny as the lead he would have

being better than anything with mcbride as the focus, does a better job showing an entire character

also I see most comedy duos seem to have the on screen performer who is less competent but still ends up with co-credits, while the non-performing guy is the real brains behind it, larry david-jerry seinfeld, judd apatow-everyone, robert smigel-adam sandler, adam mckay-will ferrell

dang man I really like observe and report/its been one of my favorite movies since I was a teenager, but saying its better than ANYTHING mcbride has starred in I think is really off the mark. Observe and Report is like the Disney TM Marvel presents Deadpool TM manifestation of this kind of humor IMO. Not to say its bad, but its watered down and of course performed by one of the most inexpressive israeli nepotists in the industry.

ok, but we are now comparing multiple seasons of a character on hbo vs a 2 hour movie

I'd say it's one of the few times rogen did a good job, but it's probably because he hated the character of ronnie
also rogen used to be a lot better, I think red in pineapple express is one of mcbride's best characters because he has a redemption arch

sure i just don't know why you cited observe and report as your primary evidence for crediting Hill as the creative engine behind Mcribedes cinematic universe given that you yourself recognize its actually one of the weaker productions following this white trash with bipolar disorder sort of script because Seth Rogen is the star (although its the best thing seth has done, because he had basically nothing to do with it)

I fricking love how Judy went off the rails with the first line she has in every scene in the second season. It's kinda flanderizing her but it's just too fricking funny. I was so excited to see what they'd make her say because the shit she says is so fricking outrageous.

"If we ever had a baby do you promise that you'd still want to frick me even if my shit got played out by the kid?" - this has got to be the funniest line I've heard in years. And the fact she's actually being sincere and actually kinda being vulnerable in that moment is so good. The whole exchange between her and BJ there was so incredible like he really fricking loves her and that affirmation made her so fricking happy.

I think this moment was one of the best moments in sitcom television like ever.

it just seems kinda shitty if the guy was innocent and they're making money of his murder

        >also diagnosed drugs instead of recreational other than that one scene
Huh? I don't get it man.

        just something more realistic
not everyone has the budget for a coke habit
prospective cops dealing with harmful thoughts while on SSRIs is more likely and dangerous

Eric Andre isn't funny and it isn't realistic that an interracial couple would be successful mega pastors in texas.

The cycle ninjas were more realistic than the interracial mega church couple.

He had a great, yet underappreciated performance in Alien:Covenant.

Danny and James Franco being Alien Covenant was the weirdest, out of place casting I can think of and was very distracting. I'm sure he wanted to try a more serious role but he didn't look or sound much different than all his others so he always came off as comedic and it brought down the scenes he was in.

Was home with the family back in December, and was sitting on the couch with my Dad deciding on something to watch. We decided to try out Eastbound and Down. We marathoned that entire fricking show. Hollering with laughter. Honestly one of the best experiences I've had with my dad cause we were both crying of laughter multiple times. Watched Vice Principals too later and loved it as well. Next time I go home we're gonna watch Righteous Gemstones. Why the frick am I blogposting in my 30s

A whole thread about McBride and Hill and no mention of the guy who got them on their way

They dumped Ben Best because he wasn't holllywood enough and now he's dead

Best attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina with frequent collaborators Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and David Gordon Green.[1] It was with McBride and Hill that Best co-created the comedy series Eastbound & Down, which ran on HBO for four seasons from 2009 to 2013. Best appeared in eight episodes of the series as Clegg, a local bartender and Kenny's longtime friend.[2]

Best also co-wrote and co-starred with McBride and Hill in the cult indie movie The Foot Fist Way, directed by Hill. He also co-wrote the 2011 period fantasy comedy Your Highness, which starred McBride, James Franco and Natalie Portman, and was directed by Green.[3] It was also Best's last collaboration with McBride and Green.

Best’s acting credits also include Superbad, What Happens in Vegas, Observe and Report, and Land of the Lost.[4]

    Best died on September 10, 2021, a day before his 47th birthday.[1]

Best was dumped because he couldn’t stop doing drugs and was making a fool of himself in Hollywood meetings early on in their career.

They tried really hard at giving him chances and helping him but he got the slightest taste of fame and went off the rails doing blow and partying to the point it was negatively impacting Hill and McBride.

An anonymous source close to them posted in detail about this on the Eastbound subreddit years ago but ended up deleting it because someone from their team reached out asking them to

McBride is definitely right leaning. He’s been asked point blank his politics in interviews and always says “I’m not a political guy at all.” Which is Hollywood speak for conservative.
