>Hasbro shills out serious cash to hire an unprincipled Oscar-winning director to shoot their commercial >critics get confused and think this must mean the commercial is high cinema
culture is dead
Barbie is kind of a weird movie in how it made Margot's Barbie a mostly passive presence, where things happen to her or happen around her and she has little agency. She's almost like a blank audience stand-in.
It's obvious why she wasn't nominated for Best Actress
>Barbie a mostly passive presence, where things happen to her or happen around her and she has little agency.
100% agree. That's one of the first things I noticed. Her journey starts not as an exercise in self reflection but because she's a doll who's being played with in a depressing manner. When faced with a choice she chooses the blue pill but is made to go with the red pill. She's taken by Mattel, then rescued by the depressed mom. Meanwhile Ken chose to go with Barbie, chose to explore patriarchy, chose to bring it back to barbieland, fricking took over their government and culture immediately, and took an active role in self discovery.
Then once Barbie gets back and discovers what happens, she just gives up. Literally just lays on the ground waiting for someone else to fix it for her. And when they finally have the solution what do they do? The most toxic femininity shit imaginable. Manipulate the Kens by toying with their love for the Barbies and turning them against each other. Destroying all of the Kens positive relationships.
And how does it end? The Kens are back to being homeless in a dystopian hellhole while Barbie leaves that mess behind because she earned a real vegana.
The movie becomes much more interesting when viewed from the perspective of Ken as the protagonist.
Yep, all of that + how toward the end they strangely made the movie a musical for Ken, but not a musical for Barbie?
Sure, Goose is a singer and Margot isn't, but couldn't she train and develop that skill for the role? The movie's title is "Barbie", not "Ken and Barbie".
Shouldn't the catchy song that gets performed at the Oscars be one performed by Barbie, the main character, or by Barbie and Ken together?
both movies are feminist trash, the only difference is that one of them is out-of-date, meandering "i'm strong and capable and independent or whatever" girlpower feminism and the other is zoomer feminism which is all about being a massive bawd and virulent misandrist
They are both more about patriarchal society than female autonomy. The bawdtiness and misandry isn't prescriptive, just a satirical expression of base urges trained out of women
Hollywood will crash in 2 years lmao, there's another strike is coming in this summer in case you didn't know and this time it's the wagies are doing it.
Honestly, Barbie was better than Porn Things
Lmao no
Ok morons let's settle this once and for all. In no more than 3 sentences, explain your argument.
Barbie made more money.
Barbie made over a billion.
Barbie has more cultural significance.
This and it's not even close
Because of the Ken plot. The main Barbie story was lame
They're both awful
barbie is the most oscar nominated ad of all time
>Hasbro shills out serious cash to hire an unprincipled Oscar-winning director to shoot their commercial
>critics get confused and think this must mean the commercial is high cinema
culture is dead
Look at her, the poor thing.
It was basically a better barbie anyway
Ken's song should've won over the Billie Eilish one
They're about the same.

At least she's still the superior foot goddess.
>Movie about prostitute beats out feminist movie based on feminist icon made by feminist writer/director
Lmfao even leftists prefer prostitutes over feminazi bullshit
Feminism has been out of style for a little bit now. It was big before Covid hit and Trump was president.
both a rabidly feminist movies
(I presume)

I won
MARGOT ROBBED
What an abysmal year for film. The Academy was correct to give a Christopher Nolan film Best Picture and that's just horrifying.
Margot will get a consolation oscar within 2 years
Hollywood will crash in 2 years lmao, there's another strike is coming in this summer in case you didn't know and this time it's the wagies are doing it.
noone will remember poor things like noone remembers the constant gardner. The oscars is all fake.
Why do people feel like this movie deserved to win anything? It’s an okay flick that turned into a meme with women. Thats it.
