Isn't the shit that went down in this episode just the logical conclusion of how the show presents conflict and the struggle to survive in nature?

Human society is also kill or be killed in this savage land.
Even in the first episode the dinosaurs that ate spear and fang's family are not evil. They're just animals

It's fricked up, but it's entirely thematically appropriate.
Also the village was engaging against violence against weaker people, they simply got a taste of what they were doing to others in the name of the Scorpion. How many families did they tear apart in their slaving? How many children did they kill?
Sometimes the arbiter of karmic vengeance is a giant caveman and his dinosaur friend.
Also the ENTIRE VILLAGE jobbed out to two people (well one is a dinosaur). So God is probably on Spear and Fang's side.
At the dawn of history eye for an eye, unfortunately, is about the best you're going to get.

Just got done watching the episode, great shit.

Also neat how the slavers weren't even wearing their war gear when we first saw them, they were just hunting. So the episode ending with them putting on the real shit was cool.

The guy left alive was the leader of the Slavers that caught Mira in the first place. This guy is meant to Spear's equal. We are probably going to see a few episodes where we're given a scene or two at the start or end where they are tracking the group. We already see how the guy has that sort of sight when he replays what happened at the dock. I suspect they'll set up a trap for Spear and Fang, or take advantage of a situation where they are already softened up by some other foe.

        >they're animals and the only one with any sense of morals is mira
Spear was clearly upset to see children among the group of villagers facing him, and doubly so when he killed the chief's son.

Also Genndy is literally insane and can work on many number of projects that he personally storyboards without getting burnt out. He's a fricking gigachad.

The things I worry about is that:
                >We'd lose the lack of dialogue niche.
                >We are already losing a lot of the fantasy elements now that they are off of Dinoland.

We are sure to get some of it back with whatever is gonna happen in Assyria, but I question how you could make a "PRIMAL" set closer to modern times. And by "modern" I mean the Iron Age.

Maybe some story of like a Roman warrior stuck by himself in Gaul and having to deal with the insanity like shamans, the myths of the forest from that era, and whatever Genndy makes up. And the show's goal being to get the frick outta the forest.

I loved the previous 3 episodes but this one wasn't as good. Primal isn't just all violence all the time. It needs to have tranquil moments for everything to have impact, but this was just 22 minutes straight of violence. If they aired this back to back with episode 3 it would have been okay since this is a direct continuation but the pacing of the episode made it less enjoyable. I hope the rest of the season is episodic like the previous episodes.

my nordda, the second half of the episode is two people slowly finding out everyone they knew has been butchered when they return home

only the first half is devoted to massacre

        Anonymous

You're right actually, I wasn't remembering it correctly because it seemed shorter when I first watched it. But this episode having a flipped format where there's no build up and the action happens before the calm does weaken the pacing by a lot. It reminds me of the Earth King episode of Avatar where they fight to get inside the palace but then things slow down, which Overanalyzing Avatar points out as being a weak structure.

I was afraid of that happening as soon as Mira showed up.

Yeah that's my only real gripe with the episode. They're all wounded and bloody, but the moment spear mounts fang they're suddenly fully healed, before getting impaled by a thousand arrows again.

Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder

This is literally RotAM level rampage, maybe more since the humans had long range weapons, but Fang is fine and Spear didn't need the black hulk goo this time.

Just doesn't make any sense, neither should have survived. I was constantly waiting for Mira to swoop in and save them or some other bullshit, instead they just kept brushing it off like nothing.

          Anonymous

          >Just doesn't make any sense, neither should have survived
Well this has never been an issue for me. If the point of a series is violence, I can always forgive impossible survival scenarios in the name of cool visuals. The blood thing is different because it just strikes me as a continuity error or being cheap, like, "animating them all bloody like this is harder and they're going to get covered in even more blood and arrows, so at the end of this scene just clean them up and forget about it".

They usually handle these kinds of thing well, for example in the first episode my thoughts of "a raft without sails is a terrible fricking idea unless you want to die of heatstroke" get acknowledged almost instantly by the writing, so it's even more jarring when they get something more basic like wound consistency wrong. Then again, I can't believe I can make the effort of complaining about minor stuff like this when the rest of the episode was great.

          >I was constantly waiting for Mira to swoop in and save them or some other bullshit
Yeah I guess that's another thing to point out. There was a bit of a disconnect between the viking chief arriving and the gang's escape being shown in flashbacks. I would have liked for them to show mira getting to spear in real time, or at least mira helping a wounded spear that can barely walk in that flashback towards the boat, but he seemed to walk just fine

I want to blame it on high adrenaline for the moment... it will all come to the next episode when we see the afterwards. If they are completely wreck to the point Mira has to care for them (similar to when Spear took care of Fang), we'll see what happened.

That's where I still think it's going. I don't think Mira likes Spear anymore. She does seem scared of him now, but she's not a coward who would run away. I think she wants to leave but thinks that she still needs to pay him back so she's going to try and drop them off in Dino Island and leave them there where they're away from any civilization.

Shit, even the monkey men were clever enough to realize they didn't stand a chance against Hulk Spear after a round of failed attacks, even if they ultimately didn't survive as well, are you telling me the monkey men are more intelligent than the slavers? In all honesty that kind of makes it seem like the fault falls on Bear Team Six there.

How many of their bear riding warriors had to die before they thought "You know maybe a bunch of slaves really are not worth the trouble", it's not like Spear went at them first even. At SOME POINT they really should've just backed off and told the village to not go at the obviously very dangerous dinosaur riding halfmonkey and just let the slaves escape. I mean goddamn one of them ignored the pair to try and go recapture them. One of them IGNORED THE T-REX TO CATCH SLAVES. You can argue that maybe the folks popping out of the huts were just ignorant of what was going on and doing a very reasonable thing trying not to die via giant hellmonster, but getting there requires an entire squad of hunters to go down and still the last one doesn't question if fighting these motherfrickers are worth it.

                Anonymous

I mean, yeah it's fair to blame Bear Team Six for prioritizing the slaves above all else. But also they were probably wienery since they had their cavebears and numbers advantage. And by the time they realized their mistake, it was far too late.

                >And by the time they realized their mistake, it was far too late.
That one that chased Mira really should have been several leaps past "realized their mistake', they'd killed more than half a dozen bears and riders each by the time he decided he was going to prioritize getting a bunch of slaves going into the forest instead of going and telling the village "Go that way they just want the slaves and I know this because I saw it".

He died trying to catch Mira like they were going to keep them contained while the actual motherfricking T-rex was eating his companions left and right.

        >Spear and Fang butcher an entire village full of men, women, young and old with no discrimination
        Fang yeah
Spear had some hesitation. Like when he sees kids and women holding babies, but again it's kill or be killed situation. And when in bezerker mode it's essentially just meat for the grinder.

I think Mira kind learn she's different after living with Spear. Like the slaves are weak and have accepted defeat, but if given a chamce to flea they'll take it.

She was always different. Which is why she attempted an escape while the rest didn't follow her. Also she's shown being much more reluctant to bow to the slavers.

Spear is definitely at fault for not backing down when Red was clearly willing to and Fang was between them. And the villagers were moronic for not running away when they have multiple opportunities to do so.

I feel like that's more of a last resort. You can see how the village is. The men go hunting. Slave shacks and behind that is more of a typical village where women raise the kids ideally no trouble is supposed to get that fat but Spear and Fang roll through the equivalent of a tsunami but with teeth.

I think you can argue that the parts of the village that just woke up to the fighting probably didnt know that if they just backed off and let them go they wouldnt have died.

But I also dont think that matters much in the grand scheme of things, its sad that a bunch of families and normally noncombatants died. But like other anons said they are vikings, they basically had the exact thing they do to others done to them

      Anonymous

I honestly doubt they'd back down regardless if they knew the whole situation.
Also I think that's kind of the point, from one's perspective its just life there's no real concept of this being karmic for them they loved their wife and son. They will avenge them regardless.

Not sure on the first point, I imagine the women would have done anything to save their kids and if it meant standing down they would have. The warriors however would probably have fought to the death. And youre right about the second point, Im just responding to the moral arguments people are making on if spear was in the wrong, if the vikings "deserved" it etc.

        Anonymous

Yeah, they didn't seem like the type to back down. They all believed in a warrior's lifestyle to such an extent that even their most vulnerable members were instantly ready to fight rather than flee. The village was their home, and it was under attack. They were reluctant to leave their homes behind and let their loved ones fight alone in a serious situation like that.
Before Spear attacked their village, the bear warriors were hostile to him just because he was someone who looked threatening and stepped on their turf. I don't think peace was ever an option for these guys. Their reaction was very different from the Celtic tribe. Those guys took in an injured stranger in order to heal him, and when he woke up and freaked out, only the warriors tried to contain him; all the other tribe members just stared at Spear and/or ran away.

This. From the beginning, Primal has been all about SURVIVAL above all. You kill, or be killed-and whatever the clan's deal was, it's unlikely they would've handed Mira back even if Spear had the mental faculty and patience for learning their language. It can suck to watch death happen sometimes. Spear and Fang mourn some of the things they had to do, and showed respect to the mammoths after realising why they were ganging up on them. But at the end of the day, if they didn't rush in there Mira wasn't getting out.

Killing can be good. Killing can be bad. But above all, killing means living one more day.

I think both parties were justified. Spear and Fang were acting in their own self interest to free their friend from slavery. The Viking village was defending itself from a group of dangerous intruders and seeing as they're a bronze age tribal society you can't really fault them too much for being slavers. Although the vikings really just should have sent their women and children into the woods when things got too hectic

Slavery was on it's way out since adoption of Christianity by Rome, but Catholics contrary to for example Americans. were not morons and were doing it gradualy, step by step. If not for the Reformation and breaking of the Christianitas slavery would be gone by 1600s

That only accounts for the West though. Asians, Africans, and others continued to practice slavery until they were either forced not to by Western powers or induced into the post-enlightenment western world order to the point that it declined.

The biggest mistake the west has made is giving technology and enforcing laws on people that didn't have the sort of cultural evolution and revolution to make them compatible with such a society. Now globalization has brought everyone down to their level rather than the west bringing them up.

pretty confident in saying this is the worst episode of the entire series so far, just feels like the writing bit off more than it could chew so a lot of things (slaves escaping, Spear/Fang/Mira's boat ride, the blood mist) end up being presented really poorly.

It's interesting how one continent is an early Cretaceous ecosystem with some mammalian megafauna whereas the other continent appears to be more oligocene with mammals dominating but still a few dinosaurs like Red. Reminds me of a sci fi book I read years ago where dinosaurs never went extinct in the new world and humans adapted independently in the old world.

They keep slaves but don't seem to use them for labour, they use scorpion symbolism despite not living in a land with scorpions, and Genndy tries to make the Vikings sympathetic despite his primary audience (Americans) being feed anti-slavery propaganda from a young age.

I was trying to find the article where Genndy talks about how there's going to be a "big surprise" that people will either enjoy or hate, and found this snippet:

    https://www.pastemagazine.com/tv/adult-swim/primal-season-2-genndy-tartakovsky-interview/
    > Tartakovsky: The second episode [“The Shadow of Fate”] was one of the most exciting story things we’ve done with a love triangle. I was so happy with it because it’s a love triangle with no dialogue in the story. You have the feelings of all these characters, and it’s tragic. I was really excited about it. Then Episode 15, “The Primal Theory,” don’t miss that one. I’m pushing everything in that one. And I think 17 and 18 are pretty incredible, just scale wise, we get to this next level. Some are more emotional and some are more exciting. We’ll see how the audience reacts to it.

I totally forgot he actually called episode 2 a "love triangle".

The quote about the surprise was:
        https://collider.com/primal-season-2-genndy-tartakovsky-comments-adult-swim/
        >"It's [Season 2] even more emotionally complex. The action is on a scale beyond what we've done, and it keeps getting amped up as we go deeper and deeper into the season. There's shock in it. There's a big surprise that's either going to get people to hate me or enjoy it, but as a storyteller this is me having fun. It's super Heavy Metal–ish. It's still pulpy, but at its core the character story between Fang and Spear — it goes bonkers. That was the best surprise of the first season. It wasn't the violence — it was their relationship that people picked up on. As a filmmaker and storyteller, that's what you're most excited about."

He didn't specify which episode the surprise will be in. It could be the next since he's hyping it up, but it might just as well be for example the season finale later on.

It's the black goo in the ape-man episode along with the shape-shifting witch who created babies. Those made people wonder long ago if Primal and Samurai Jack might take place in the same universe.
Genndy said there's gonna be a big surprise that people will either love or hate. The synopsis of the next episode says that the "true nature of man's origin" will get revealed. So people are thinking maybe it's that the Aku goo enhanced the lifeforms of the world, but also made them corrupted and savage.
It's not necessarily that. It's totally possible it's something else. But if you're one of those people who love to take bits of lore and speculate about it, that's how people came up with the theory.

Just caught the episode. I feel bad for Spear, he really did try to spare the kid.

Sparing the kid in this case would be leaving him for an unknown fate without supervision, unless Spear intended to run off with him.

        Anonymous

There were still people alive when he accidentally killed the kid. I think he was hoping the others would back down when they recognized he was only fighting because they were. Once the kid died, even though it was an accident, there was no negotiating since he can't speak their language.

The entire spirit of the series as a whole is based off that of Conan, which shits on people who do things like defend slavery because it’s the way things were and it was just what civilizations did

There's been multiple reasons given that you choose to ignore, but I guess you'll continue to pretend that ancient civilizations could go to the wishing well for all they desired and they just enslaved people because they felt like it.

He was more honorable and less cruel than civilized people, of his time, yes. But he wasn't a hero, just a gigachad doing what he felt was best for him.

I wonder if people in the future will talk about wage slavery the way we do now about slavery and sharecropping. Worse, I wonder what evil will replace wage slavery. So far seems like a modified feudalism.

It'll be the type of feudalism where the elites aren't obligated to protect their serfs, which will be worse than historical feudalism

              >>what evil will replace wage slavery
              Gig economy.
Especially the app-driven kind with Uber, Instacart, GrubHub, and so forth. It's way worse than being regularly employed like with wage slavery. Now Taxi Drivers and Delivery Drivers have been completely replaced by poor sops who don't know if they can make their next rent payment in time because they aren't given any structure. And because they aren't employees they can't receive benefits either. Silicon Valley created a new class of people just so beta pointdexters can feel esteemed by saying that they "work for Uber" so we know that they mean they're a software developer and not any of the drivers who are the actual workers for the company. The only reason someone should ever use these apps is if you're elderly or disabled and can't manage to go to the grocery store on your own and you don't know anyone who can help you. Otherwise you are legitimately an evil person.
I've only used these apps myself twice in my life and felt awful. I needed them to get a ride from the airport to my hotel and get a ride from my hotel to a conference just because it happened to be in the hell that's called California which doesn't have the public transportation infrastructure of a civilized society. Seeing the utter desperation in their eyes meant I had to avoid eye contact the rest of the ride.

It's already started happening to them too. With the "freelancing" fad, H1B visas, code camps, all meant to commoditize and lower the value of software development labor. The highest level engineers will be unaffected for a while, but no one is safe forever.
